¡Muchas felicidades, queridos hermanos! Hoy es un día especial para todos nosotros. Así que, feliz Año Nuevo y la fiesta de María, madre de Dios. Damos gracias a Dios por las celebraciones de hoy, que son grandes fuentes de bendiciones. Primero, por el regalo de un año nuevo. Segundo, por el don de una preciosa madre para acompañar, consolar e interceder por nosotros a lo largo de este año.

El título “madre de Dios” es del griego “Theotokos” (portador de Dios). A través de esta celebración, la Iglesia nos recuerda el papel especial de María en el plan de Dios. Esta solemnidad puede ser trazado al concilio de Éfeso en 431. Oficialmente, se celebró primero en Portugal como la fiesta de la maternidad divina de María. Esto fue con el permiso del Papa Benedicto IV, en 1575.

En 1931, el Papa Pío XI extendió la fiesta a toda la iglesia. Finalmente, en 1974, el Papa Pablo VI quitó la fiesta de la circuncisión de Cristo del calendario litúrgico el primer día del año. Lo reemplazó con la solemnidad de María, madre de Dios.

Sobre el importante papel de María en el plan de Dios y la solemnidad de hoy, la Iglesia enseña: “María, la Santa y siempre Virgen Madre de Dios, es la obra maestra de la misión del hijo y el espíritu en la plenitud del tiempo. Por primera vez, en el plan de salvación y porque su espíritu la había preparado, el padre encontró el lugar de la morada donde su hijo y su espíritu podían habitar entre los hombres… (CIC 721).

El año nuevo nos ofrece nuevas oportunidades, nuevas ideas y nuevas resoluciones. Es un signo de regeneración y un tiempo de nueva esperanza. Cada año nuevo, hacemos nuevas resoluciones. Lamentablemente, apenas los guardamos o cumplimos. ¿Porqué? Posiblemente, porque siempre tenemos prisa por hacerlas, y consecuentemente, no consultamos a Dios sobre tales resoluciones.

Por lo tanto, una cosa importante que debemos hacer este año es resuelva a fortalecer nuestra relación con Dios. Proverbios dice: “encomiende todas tus obras al Señor, y él establecerá tus planes (Prov 16, 3). También, el salmista nos amonesta: “Comprometa al Señor tus empresas; Confía en él que lo hará bien (Sal 37:5).

Por lo tanto, este año debemos desarrollar el espíritu resiliente de Moisés que insistió ante Dios: “Si no nos acompañas, no dejaremos este lugar (Ex 33, 15). También, como Enoc, caminemos con Dios este año (Gen 5, 27).

Nuestra primera lectura es una bendición importante del año nuevo y directa de Dios para nosotros, su pueblo. Es una señal de la fidelidad de Dios, y su voluntad a caminar con nosotros este año. Por lo tanto, a través de sus bendiciones, Dios nos ha preparado para nuestro camino este año. Por lo tanto, todo lo que necesitamos decir es un resonante amén a esta bendición, y caminar justamente con Dios este año.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo relata la encarnación de Dios en María. Es decir, como Dios hacerse carne en la Santísima Virgen María. Pablo nos recuerda nuestra filiación por la participación, y nuestra adopción como hijos del mismo padre con Cristo. En consecuencia, nos recuerda que, por la misma adopción, somos hijos de María, madre de Dios.

El evangelio simplemente nos enseña que María cumplió su papel como madre hacia su hijo. Ella lo concibió y lo nutrió con amor y ternura. Igualmente, lo acompañó a través de cada paso y etapa de su vida, incluso hasta su muerte en la Cruz. En otras palabras, no sólo dio a luz a Jesús, María le ayudó a cumplir el plan de Dios para la humanidad. A través de esto, ella se presenta como el epítome y modelo de la buena maternidad.

Así que, mientras continuamos nuestro caminar con Dios este año, pidamos constantemente la intercesión María, madre de Dios: Oh, Santa Madre de Dios, no desprecie nuestras oraciones en nuestras necesidades, sino líbranos de todos los peligros, oh gloriosa y bendita Virgen. Amén.

Congratulations my dear brethren! Today is a special day for all of us. So, happy New Year, and feast day of Mary, Mother of God. We give thanks to God for today’s celebrations, both of which are great sources of blessings. First, for the gift of a new year. Second, for the gift of a precious mother to accompany, comfort, and intercede for us throughout this year.

The title “Mother of God” is from the Greek “Theotokos” (God-bearer). Through this celebration, the church reminds us of Mary’s special role in God’s plan. This solemnity can be traced back to the Council of Ephesus in 431. Officially, it was celebrated first in Portugal as Mary’s Divine Maternity. This was with the permission of Pope Benedict IV, in 1575.

In 1931, Pope Pius XI extended the feast to the entire church. Finally, in 1974, Pope Paul VI removed the feast of the Circumcision of Christ from the liturgical calendar on the first day of the year. He replaced it with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.”

About the important role of Mary in God’s plan and today’s solemnity, the Church teaches: “Mary, the all-holy and ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time, in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men… (CCC 721).

New Year offers us new opportunities, new ideas, and new resolutions. It is a sign of regeneration and a time of new hope. Each new year, we make new resolutions. Unfortunately, we hardly keep or fulfill them. Why? Possibly, because we are always in a hurry to make them, and consequently, do not consult God about such resolutions.

So, one important thing we must do this year is to resolve to strengthen our relationship with God. Proverbs tells: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Pr 16, 3). Also, as the psalmist admonishes us: Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He shall bring it to pass (Ps 37: 5). Therefore, this year we must develop the resilient spirit of Moses who insisted before God: “If you do not personally go with us, we shall not leave this place… (Ex 33, 15). Also, like Enoch let us walk with God (Gen 5, 27).

Our first reading today is a very important new year’s blessing direct from God to us, his people. It is a sign of God’s faithfulness, and His willingness to work with us this year. Hence, through His blessings, God has equipped us for the journey ahead this year. So, all we need to say is a resounding amen to this blessing and walk justly with God this year.

In the second reading, Paul recounts the incarnation of God in Mary. That is, how God took flesh in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Paul reminds us of our sonship by participation and our adoption as children of the same Father with Christ. Consequently, He also reminds us that by the same adoption, we are children of Mary, the Mother of God.

The gospel simply teaches us that Mary fulfilled her role as a Mother toward her son. She conceived and nurtured him with love and tenderness. She equally accompanied him through every step and stage of his life even till his death on the cross. In other words, not only did she give birth to Jesus, Mary helped Him to accomplish God’s plan for humanity. Through this, she presents herself as the epitome and model of good motherhood.

So, as we continue our walk with God this year, let us constantly ask for the intercession Mary, Mother of God: Oh, Holy Mother of God, despise not our prayers in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, Oh glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Today is the first Sunday of Christmas. It is dedicated to the Holy Family of Nazareth, the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. It is the model of every true Christian Family. Sociologically speaking, the family is the nucleus of human society and where life and learning begin.

One cannot underestimate the importance of today’s celebration in the life of our church and society. First, it reminds us of the family’s specific and vital role as a sacred institution. Our society’s sustenance and subsistence depend on the family’s continuous existence.

Second, this celebration reminds us of the proper constitution of a family. That is the right and naturally accepted union of a father, mother, and children. Hence, any marriage (like same-sex marriage) other than this in the guise of a family is an aberration. It is also against God, who initially made them male and female. He did not take the rib of Adam to create another man as a partner to Adam. Instead, he took Adam’s rib and made a biologically and functionally different human being, a woman (Gen 1:2).

The first reading of this Sunday explicitly outlines the three components of a family: father, mother, and children. It equally outlines each family member’s position: “The Lord honors the father in his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.” Each is important and unique in its position.

Notably, Sirac emphasized the role of children towards their parents. This role centers on honor and obedience to one’s parents. Paul re-echoes this: “Children, it is your Christian duty to honor your parents. Respect your father and your mother is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it; so that it may go well with you” (Ep 6, 1-4).

In today’s second reading, Paul reminds us of the Christian virtues that are very important to sustain our families. Each member of the family must strive to acquire them. These include compassion, kindness, patience, and forgiveness toward every family member. Most importantly, Paul says: “Put on love and let the peace of Christ control your hearts.”

Most families are not living in peace today. Instead of wearing the garment of love, they wear that of hatred. Paul reminds us of each family member’s role: “Fathers, love your wives and avoid bitterness towards them. Wives, respect your husband. Children, obey your parents.” These roles are crystal clear.

In addition to the virtues that Paul enumerated above, today’s gospel presents us with essential family characteristics. That is prayer and unity of purpose. Mary and Joseph took their son Jesus to the temple for consecration. So, they acted and prayed together for the good of their family.

When Herod threatened their baby, they prayerfully decided to flee to Egypt. This is an excellent virtue to emulate from them today as we celebrate. This is especially true in our world, where individualism has dramatically harmed family relations. Prayer and unity sustain and help our families. This is primarily during difficult moments in life. This is true of the saying that “united we stand, divided we fall.” Therefore, let us pray, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph: make our hearts and family like unto yours. Merry Christmas!

Hoy es el primer domingo del tiempo de Navidad. Es un domingo dedicado a la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret. Es decir, la familia de Jesús, María y José. Es el modelo de toda familia cristiana. Sociológicamente, la familia es el núcleo de la sociedad humana y el lugar donde la vida y el aprendizaje comienzan.

La importancia de la celebración de hoy tanto en la vida de la iglesia como en la de la sociedad no puede ser subestimada. Primero, es para recordarnos el importante papel específico de la familia como una institución sagrada. Es decir, que el sustento y la subsistencia de nuestra sociedad dependen de la existencia continua de la familia.

Segundo, esta celebración nos recuerda la constitución de una familia. Es decir, la justa y naturalmente aceptada unión del padre, la madre y sus hijos. Por tanto, cualquier unión (como la del mismo sexo) aparte de esta en nombre de la familia es una aberración. Es también ir contra Dios, que los creó hombre y mujer al principio. Él no tomó la costilla de Adán para crear a otro hombre para cohabitar con él. En cambio, tomó la costilla de Adán y creó un ser humano biológicamente y funcionalmente diferente, mujer (Gén 1 y 2).

La primera lectura de este domingo explícitamente describe los tres diferentes componentes de la familia: el padre, la madre y los niños. Igualmente, subraya la posición de cada miembro en relación con el otro: “Dios honra al padre en sus hijos y afirma la autoridad de la madre sobre los hijos.” Cada uno es importante y único en su lugar.

Importante, Sirac enfatizó el papel de los hijos hacia sus padres. Este papel se centra en el honor y la obediencia hacia nuestros padres. Pablo lo recoge (hace eco): “Hijos, es su deber cristiano obedecer a sus padres…Honren a sus padres y a sus madres. Es el primer mandamiento que lleva una promesa: para que sean felices y se prolongue su vida en la tierra” (Ef. 6, 1-4).”

En esta segunda lectura, Pablo nos recuerda las virtudes cristianas que son bien importantes para sostener nuestras familias. Cada miembro de la familia debe hacer esfuerzos para adquirirlas. Estas incluyen: compasión, ternura, bondad, paciencia y el perdón. Y la más importante. Pablo dice: “Sobre todo esto, vestirse con el amor y dejar que la paz de Cristo controle sus corazones.”

La mayoría de las familias no viven en paz hoy. En lugar de vestirse con el amor, se visten con el odio. Pablo resume recordándonos del papel de cada miembro de la familia: “Padres, aman a sus esposas, y no sean ásperos con ellas…Esposas, respetan a sus esposos…Hijos, obedecen a sus padres… y padres no exasperan a sus hijos.” Estas funciones son bien claras.

Además de las virtudes que Pablo enumeró en la segunda lectura, el Evangelio de hoy nos presenta bien importantes características de la familia. Estas son, oración y unidad en momentos difíciles. Juntos José y María llevaron a Cristo para consagrarlo en el templo. Así que actuaron juntos por el bien de su familia.

Cuando Herodes amenazó a su bebé, decidieron juntos en oraciones huir a Egipto. Esta es una virtud bien importante para emular de la Sagrada Familia que celebramos hoy. Esto es bien importante en un mundo donde el individualismo ha hecho un gran daño a nuestra relación familiar. Oración y unidad sostienen y ayudan a nuestras familias. Esto es especialmente así durante momentos difíciles de la vida. Así que este dicho es cierto y verdad: “unidos vencemos, divididos caemos”. Por tanto, pidámosle a la sagrada familia de Nazaret que nos ayude como decimos: “Jesús, María y José, hagan nuestros y familias corazones como los suyos, ¡Amén!

The Word Made Flesh Is Among Us!

“Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has worked wonders.” Today is Christmas, the day we have long awaited. Christmas is a milestone in the history of our salvation. So, it is wonderful to know that “God is With Us.”

Today, God has proved the depth of his love by fulfilling his promise. The Word of God is no longer just the message spoken by prophets. It is now a human person. The Word has become flesh through the Blessed Virgin Mary. The central message of today’s celebration is the incarnation and the fullness of God’s divine revelation in Christ.

Our first reading from Isaiah finds its sphere of accomplishment in the birth of Jesus Christ and His life and ministry. Isaiah proclaims: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the one who brings Good News.” Indeed, the Good News himself is among us. It is the Good News of love, peace, charity, and happiness. Above all, it is the Good News of life and salvation.

Therefore, we, who have waited faithfully, patiently, and vigilantly during the Advent season, must raise our voices and shout for joy because the Lord our God is now with us. Today, the prophet’s call is to celebrate Emmanuel, God, with us. It is a call to be joyful.

In our second reading, the letter to the Hebrews captures and presents what God did for us today in a spectacular manner: “God Spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our own time…he has spoken to us through the son he appointed to inherit everything…He is the radiant light of God’s glory and the perfect copy of his nature.” 

The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that God fulfilled the promise he made through the prophet in the past. This is by revealing the hidden mystery of our salvation. Now, we are the favored ones. That is, as many of us have received the newborn baby into our hearts. Revelation has reached its apogee today, and the hidden mystery of the old covenant has been fully revealed in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we need no more public revelation.

The gospel of John also gives us a synopsis of what happened today. That is, the divine incarnation of God: The Word was made flesh, He lived among us, and we saw His glory.”  The Word, which was with the Father as Spirit, is now with us both as flesh and spirit. Hence, while not losing His divinity, God, through Christ, his son, has condescended to become like us. What a great love that God has shown us, his people!

Therefore, today we celebrate Sacrifice. So, we, too, must be ready to sacrifice something for the good of our brothers and sisters as Christ did by coming to share in our nature. We celebrate today’s Humility. So, we must learn to be humble from Christ, who, despite being God, took our nature. We celebrate the reign of peace. That is, peace not as the world gives it, but as God promised to offer it to those who believe in him (Jn 14, 21). Also, we celebrate the accomplishment of hope in Jesus Christ.

Finally, today is a day of joy. So, I wish all of you, my dear brethren, a wonderful and fun-filled celebration this joyful season. Therefore, let us: “Sing psalms to the Lord with harps. With the sound of trumpets and the horn, let us acclaim the King, the Lord” who is with us.

“Canten al Señor un cántico nuevo, porque ha hecho maravillas.” Hoy es día de Navidad. El día que hemos estado esperando hace mucho tiempo. La Navidad es un hito en la historia de nuestra salvación. Así, es maravilloso saber que “Dios está con nosotros.”

Hoy, Dios ha probado la profundidad de su amor por cumplir su promesa. La palabra de Dios ya no es sólo el mensaje hablado por los profetas. Ahora, es una persona humana. La palabra se ha convertido en carne a través de la Santísima Virgen María. El mensaje central de la celebración de hoy es la encarnación y la plenitud de la revelación divina de Dios en Cristo.

Nuestra primera lectura de Isaías encuentra su ámbito de realización en el nacimiento de Jesucristo, en su vida y ministerio. Isaías proclama: “¡Cuán hermosos en las montañas son los pies del que trae buenas noticias!” De hecho, la buena noticia está entre nosotros. Es la buena noticia de amor, paz, caridad y felicidad. Sobre todo, es una buena noticia de vida y salvación.

Por lo tanto, nosotros, que hemos esperado fielmente, con paciencia y vigilancia durante el tiempo de Adviento, debemos levantar nuestra voz y gritar de alegría, porque el Señor, nuestro Dios, está ahora con nosotros. La llamada del Profeta hoy en día es un llamado a celebrar el Emmanuel, Dios con nosotros. Es una llamada a ser feliz.

En nuestra segunda lectura, la Carta a los hebreos se captura y presenta lo que Dios hizo para nosotros hoy de una manera espectacular: “Dios habló a nuestros antepasados por medio de los profetas; pero en nuestro propio tiempo…nos ha hablado por el hijo…Él es la luz resplandeciente de la gloria de Dios y la copia perfecta de su naturaleza.”

La Carta a los hebreos simplemente expresa que Dios ha cumplido la promesa que hizo a través de los profetas. Se trata de revelar el misterio oculto de nuestra salvación. Ahora, nosotros somos los favorecidos. Es decir, todos los que hemos recibido el nuevo bebé nacido en nuestros corazones. La Revelación ha alcanzado su apogeo hoy, y el misterio oculto en la antigua alianza se ha revelado plenamente en Jesucristo. Por lo tanto, no necesitamos más revelación pública.

El Evangelio de Juan nos da una sinopsis de lo que sucedió hoy, la encarnación divina de Dios: “La palabra se hizo carne, vivió entre nosotros y vimos su gloria.” La palabra que estaba con el Padre como espíritu está ahora con nosotros tanto como carne y espíritu. Por lo tanto, no perdió su divinidad, Dios por medio de Cristo su hijo, condescendió a ser como nosotros. ¡Qué gran amor el que Dios ha demostrado a nosotros su pueblo!

Por lo que, hoy celebramos el sacrificio. Así que, debemos estar dispuestos a sacrificar algo por el bien de nuestros hermanos, como hizo Cristo por venir a compartir en nuestra naturaleza. Hoy celebramos la humildad. Por lo tanto, debemos aprender a ser humildes como Cristo, quien, a pesar de ser Dios, tomó nuestra naturaleza. Celebramos el reinado de la paz. Es decir, paz no como el mundo la da, sino como Dios había prometido ofrecerla a aquellos que creen en Él (Jn 14, 21). Así mismo, celebramos la realización de nuestra esperanza en Cristo Jesús.

Por último, hoy es un día de alegría. Así, mis queridos hermanos les deseo a todos ustedes una maravillosa celebración en esta temporada de alegría. Por lo tanto: “Toquen la cítara para el Señor, suenen los instrumentos; con clarines y al son de trompetas aclamen al Rey y Señor

La buena noticia es sencilla, Dios ha cumplido su promesa a su pueblo, Dios está con nosotros. Y más importante, Dios nos ha mostrado una gran misericordia y amor. Con el acontecimiento de esta noche, hemos visto la gran fidelidad de Dios a su nosotros, su pueblo.

Nuestra primera lectura de esta noche de Navidad del libro del profeta Isaías, captura y se resume todo lo que hemos logrado por el nacimentero de Emanuel, Dios está con nosotros. El profeta dice: “El pueblo que caminaba en tinieblas vio la luz grande, y a los que habitaban tierras de sombras, una luz les brillo.”

La luz de Dios que brilla sobre nosotros es Cristo, el recién nacido. Él es la luz de las naciones y de todo aquel que lo ha aceptado. Y nunca más camináramos en las tinieblas. El vino para disparar las tinieblas que oscureció nuestros corazones y nuestro mundo.

Mas importante, con el nacimiento de Cristo esta noche hemos empezado una nueva etapa de alegría, una nueva etapa de nuestra historia salvífica, y una nueva vida llena de esperanza, porque, Dios está con nosotros.

Como Tito lo captura en nuestra segunda lectura, con el nacimiento de Cristo hoy: “Ha aparecido la gracia de Dios que trae la salvación para todos los hombres…la aparición gloriosa del Dios y Salvador nuestro señor: Jesucristo.” Por eso, también, vivimos en una nueva etapa de la gracia de nuestro Dios.

Finalmente, nuestro deber en este tiempo de Navidad es hacer lo que los pastores y los ángeles hicieron, alabar al niño Jesús, y cantando la gloria del Señor. Por eso, nuestro cantico hoy, y en adelante será: “Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres que aman el Señor.”

También, a nosotros consta, a difundir la buena noticia hasta los confines del mundo que hoy, en belén de Nazaret, nos ha nacido un gran salvador. Alégrense hermanos porque Dios, nos ha mostrado su gran misericordia. Feliz Navidad

Dear brethren, this is the night that we have been preparing for the past four weeks. Today, unto us is born the Savior of the world. He is the prince of peace, the king of kings, and the Lord of lords.

The good news is simple; God has fulfilled his promise to his people. God is with us. Most importantly, God has shown us his great mercy and love. With the events of this night, we have seen the incredible fidelity of God to us, his people.

Our first reading this Christmas night from the prophet Isaiah’s book captures and summarizes what we have achieved through Christ’s birth. The prophet says: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. On those who live in the land of deep shadow, a great light has shone.”

The light of God that shines on us is Christ, the newly born. He is the light of the nations and of all who have accepted him. Never again shall we walk in darkness. He came to dispel the darkness that darkened our hearts and our world.

Most importantly, with the birth of Christ this night, we have begun a new season of joy, a new season of our salvific history, and a new life full of hope, because God is with us.

As Titus captures it in our second reading, with the birth of Christ today: “The grace of God had appeared, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race…The glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”  Also, this night we live in a new season of the Grace of God, which God himself has fashioned for us.

Finally, our duty during this time of Christmas is to do what the shepherds and angels did, adoring the child Jesus and singing the glory of the Lord. Therefore, our song today, and forever shall be: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men of goodwill, who enjoy God’s favors.”

Also, it behooves us to spread the good news to the ends of the world. That today, in Bethlehem, of Nazareth to us, is born a great savior. Rejoice brethren, for God, has shown us his great mercy. Merry Christmas!

El signo que Dios nos revela en este último domingo de Adviento es altamente significativo. La elección de Dios del Mesías fue dentro de la casa de David. Sin embargo, el hijo de María pertenece a todas las naciones. Por lo tanto, todos, formamos parte de esa nación. Esto es a través del amor de Dios y su invitación a compartir la herencia de Cristo. Así pues, Cristo viene para el bien de todos nosotros.

En la primera lectura de este domingo, Dios nos dio el más grande y definitivo de los signos sobre el Mesías: “¡Una doncella está embrazada y pronto dará a luz un hijo que llamará Emmanuel, que significa Dios está con nosotros!” Es importante tener en cuenta que este signo fue dado al rey Acaz sólo después de que él se humilló y se negó a poner a Dios a prueba.

Por lo tanto, las lecciones aquí incluyen que, debemos permitir a Dios ser Dios, sin intentar adelantarse a Él. En segundo lugar, debemos aprender a confiar en el juicio de Dios y su voluntad para nosotros. En tercer lugar, no necesitamos correr detrás de signos, porque Dios ya nos ha dado la plenitud de la revelación en Jesucristo. La cuarta, es que, si nos humillamos, Dios nos revelará, “el misterio de su voluntad, según su propósito, en Cristo Jesús ” (Ef. 1, 9).

Tanto la segunda lectura y el Evangelio de hoy son narraciones sobre el nacimiento y la vida de Cristo. Nos recuerdan que las señales que Dios nos dio a través de los profetas, (es decir, los signos que son el fundamento de nuestra esperanza esta temporada), no son “flatus vocis” (palabras vacías). Por el contrario, son verdades cumplidas en Cristo.

Por lo tanto, en la segunda lectura, Pablo nos recuerda de las promesas que vinieron a través de las palabras de los profetas. Aquí, destacó tres hechos muy importantes. En primer lugar, nos recuerda el origen divino y la naturaleza de Cristo: “Esta es la buena noticia de Cristo, el hijo de Dios”. En segundo lugar, nos recuerda del origen humano y la naturaleza de Cristo: “.Que según la naturaleza humana que tomó, fue el descendiente de David.”

Todo estofueron para asegurarnos que Cristo es realmente el Mesías prometido. El tercer hecho es nuestra relación con Cristo. Es decir, cómo formamos el plan de Dios, y de su economía de la salvación: “ustedes son una de esas naciones, y por su llamado pertenecen a Jesucristo”. A través de esto, Pablo nos recuerda nuestra herencia con Cristo.

En el Evangelio, Mateo narra “cómo Jesús nació.” Como Pablo, Mateo en su relato de la infancia remonta al linaje de Jesús a la dinastía del rey David. Esto también pretende asegurarnos (como Pablo), que Jesús es el Mesías prometido. En este relato, Mateo destacó el muy importante y central papel de María y José. Eran instrumentos de Dios para el cumplimiento de su misión de salvación para nosotros. Esto nos enseña que Dios está activo en nuestra historia y vida, y que Él viene a nosotros a través de los instrumentos humanos.

Por último, como esperamos la venida del Mesías, cada uno de nosotros debe disponerse como instrumento digno. Debemos estar dispuestos a cooperar con Dios como lo hizo María y José, para que se cumplan las promesas de Dios a través de nosotros.

También, tenemos que permitirnos ser instrumentos a través de los cuales Dios pueda salvar a la humanidad. Por lo tanto, en cualquier capacidad que Dios nos llamó a participar en la economía de la salvación, cooperemos con Él como María y José lo hizo hoy.

Today is the fourth Sunday of Advent. Our expectations shall be fulfilled in a couple of days, and the birth of the Messiah will justify our efforts and patience. These few days call for more caution and vigilance.

The sign God revealed to us on this Sunday of Advent is highly significant. God’s choice of the messiah was from the house of David. However, Mary’s child belongs to all nations. So, we all form part of the nations. This is through God’s love and invitation to share in Christ’s heritage. Hence, Christ is coming for the sake of all of us.

In the first reading of this Sunday, God gave us the most significant and definitive signs about the Messiah: “A maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanuel, which means God is with us!” It is important to note that this sign was given to king Ahaz only after he humbled himself by refusing to put God to the test.

Hence the lessons here include that we must allow God to be God without trying to preempt him. Second, we must learn to trust God’s judgment and goodwill for us. Third, we need not run after signs anymore because God has given us the fullness of revelation in Jesus Christ. The fourth is that if we humble ourselves, God will reveal “the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ” (Eph 1:9).

Both the second reading and the gospel of today are narratives about the birth and life of Christ. They remind us that the signs that God gave to us through the prophets (that is, the signs which are the foundation of our hope this season) are not “flatus vocis” (empty words). Instead, they are genuine and fulfilled in Christ.

Hence, in the second reading, Paul reminds us of the promises that came through the words of the prophets. Here, he highlighted three essential facts. First, he reminds us of Christ’s divine origin and nature: “This is the good news about Christ, the son of God.” Second, he reminds us of Christ’s human origin and character: “Who according to the human nature he took was from the descendant of David.”

All these were to assure us that Christ is the promised Messiah. The third fact is about our relationship with Christ. That is, how we fit into God’s plan and his economy of salvation: “You are one such nation, and by his call belong to Jesus Christ.” Through this, Paul reminds us of our heritage Christ.

In today’s gospel, Matthew narrates “how Jesus was born.” Like Paul, Matthew, in his infancy narrative, traced Jesus’ lineage back to the dynasty of king David. This is to assure us (as Paul did) that Jesus is the promised Messiah. In this narrative, Mathew highlighted the significant and central role played by Mary and Joseph. They were God’s instruments for fulfilling His mission of salvation for us. This teaches us that God is active in our history and lives and comes to us through human agents.

Finally, as we expect the coming of the Messiah, each of us must make himself available as a worthy instrument. We must be ready to cooperate with God as Mary and Joseph did so that the promises of God might be fulfilled through us.

Also, we must allow ourselves to be instruments through which God could save humanity. So, in whatever capacity God calls us to participate in the economy of salvation, let us cooperate with him as Mary and Joseph did today.
