We are Redeemed by God’s Grace in Christ

Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow” Today is Laetare Sunday. It is unique because the Church exalts us to rejoice in the hope of our salvation.

Our first reading of this Sunday presents what seems to be the two sides of a coin. That is the wrath, and the mercy of God revealed in both the exile and liberation of his people. Three complaints were made against Israel and its leaders. These include: “That they were unfaithful; they defiled the temple; and, they laughed at the prophets.”

This led to their deportation and exile. However, in his mercy, God decided to restore them at his own time. Hence, this reading is essentially a message of hope anchored on the Grace of a loving, merciful, and sovereign God. This is a demonstration of how God chose to save humanity through his only son Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, for some obvious reasons, only a few of those granted freedom by king Cyrus took advantage of the opportunity to return home. The rest continued living in the land of exile. When God is ready to save us, we must respond positively to his offer of salvation both from physical and spiritual captivity. It is only through this that our joy will be complete.

In the second reading, Paul reminds us of our former state and how God did redeem us: “…When we were dead through sin, He brought us to life with Christ.” This is simply a manifestation of God’s love and mercy. Most importantly, it highlights the Grace of God in action. Today, we rejoice because God has shown us mercy through his Grace.

However, Paul calls our attention to an essential point and question, “shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?” (Rom 6, 1). Of course, the answer is no! The reason is that we must not take anything for granted. We have a part to play. God’s grace has been poured out to save us. However, we must reach out to fetch it.

God has saved us through Grace, but he expects us to nourish the new life by living a good life. So, the purpose of saving us through his Grace is clear: “To live a good life, as he meant us to live it from the beginning.” Yes, this is what Grace did for us. It restored us to the life of innocence. So, we must appreciate what God has done for us through Christ.

The gospel of this Sunday contains a very popular verse: “God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that anyone who believes in him might be saved.” This is the core of today’s good news and should be a source of great joy for all of us. God’s offer was free and communicated the fullness of Grace.

The condition of this offer is clear and simple: “…So that everyone who believes in him may not be lost but may be saved.” This reminds us that Grace is not opposed to faith. Instead, they work together. Also, it reminds us that God has made Grace and salvation available this season. On our part, we must be ready to accept this offer through faith in Christ.

In conclusion, we are called to rejoice today because Grace has been made available, and our salvation is close at hand (Jas 5:8). What we simply need to do is, believe, and live the good life for which God created from the beginning. The good life means living as faithful children of God. It means living for God day after day and time after time. This is the only way our joy can be complete.

“Alégrense Jerusalén, gozan con ella todos los que la aman: alegran de su alegría los que por ella llevaron luto.” Hoy es el domingo de alegría (“Laetare”). Es único porque, la iglesia nos exalta a regocijarnos en la esperanza de nuestra salvación.

Nuestra primera lectura de este domingo nos presenta lo que parecen dos lados de una moneda. Es la ira y la misericordia de Dios. Estos se revelan tanto en el exilio, como en la liberación de su pueblo. Tres quejas fueron hechas contra Israel y sus líderes. Estos incluyen: “que eran infieles; profanaron el templo; y se rieron de los profetas “.

Esto causó su deportación y exilio. Sin embargo, en su misericordia, Dios decidió restaurarlos a su propio tiempo. Por lo tanto, esta lectura es esencialmente un mensaje de esperanza anclado en la gracia de un Dios amoroso, misericordioso y soberano. Esta es una demostración de cómo Dios decidió salvar a la humanidad a través de su Hijo único.

Por desgracia, por algunas razones obvias, sólo pocos de los que el rey Ciro otorgó la libertad aprovecharon la oportunidad de regresarse a su patria. El resto continuó viviendo en la tierra el exilio. Cuando Dios está listo para salvarnos, debemos responder positivamente a su oferta de salvación, tanto del cautiverio físico como del espiritual. Es sólo a través de esto, que nuestra alegría será completa.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo nos recuerda nuestro estado anterior y cómo Dios nos redimió: “Cuando estábamos muertos por el pecado, él nos hecho vivir con Cristo. Esto es simplemente una manifestación del amor y la misericordia de Dios. Lo más importante, Pablo destaca la gracia de Dios en acción. Hoy nos regocijamos porque Dios nos ha mostrado una gran misericordia por medio de su gracia.

Sin embargo, Pablo llama nuestra atención a un punto y pregunta muy importante “… ¿vamos a seguir pecando para que la gracia puede aumentar? (Rom 6:1). Por supuesto, la respuesta es, ¡no! La razón es que, no debemos tomar nada por sentado. Tenemos un papel que jugar. La gracia de Dios ha sido derramada para salvarnos. Sin embargo, debemos aceptarla.

Dios nos ha salvado a través de la gracia, pero él espera que alimentemos la nueva vida por vivirla bien. Por lo tanto, el propósito de salvarnos a través de su gracia es claro: “vivir la buena vida, como él quiso que nosotros la viviéramos desde el principio.” Sí, esto es lo que la gracia hizo por nosotros. Nos restauró a la vida de la inocencia. Por lo tanto, debemos apreciar lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros a través de Cristo.

El Evangelio de este domingo contiene un versículo muy popular: “¡Tanto amó Dios al mundo! que lo dio a su Hijo único, para que quien creen en el serán salvados.” Este es el núcleo de las buenas noticias de hoy y debe ser una fuente de gran alegría para todos nosotros. La oferta de Dios era libre y comunicó la plenitud de la gracia\

La condición de esta oferta es clara y sencilla: “… para que todos los que creen en él no se pierdan, pero serán salvados.” Esto nos recuerda que, la gracia no se opone a la fe. Más bien, trabajan juntos. Además, nos recuerda que, Dios ha hecho la gracia y la salvación disponibles en esta temporada. Por nuestra parte, debemos estar dispuestos a aceptar esta oferta a través de la fe en Cristo.

En conclusión, estamos llamados a regocijarnos hoy porque la gracia ha estado disponible, y nuestra salvación está cerca (Santiago 5:8). Lo que simplemente necesitamos hacer es, creer y vivir la buena vida que Dios nos creó a vivir desde el principio. La buena vida significa, vivir como hijos fieles de Dios. Significa, vivir para Dios día tras día, y tiempo tras tiempo. Esta es la única manera en que nuestra alegría puede ser completa.

Cristo es la Sabiduría Perfecta, y la Plenitud de la Ley

Mientras que continuamos nuestro viaje en este tercer domingo de Cuaresma, celebramos a Cristo, la plenitud de la ley y la sabiduría de Dios. Hoy, la Iglesia nos llama a re-dedicarnos a Cristo. Esto es porque él es el cumplimiento del mandamiento de Dios.

En nuestra primera lectura del libro del Éxodo, Dios le dio la ley a Moisés para Israel. La ley fue dada a Israel para ayudarlos a hacerse más sabios. También se les dio para fortalecer su relación con Dios y ayudarles organizar su vida social y religiosa.

Por lo tanto, los mandamientos de Dios son hechos para formarnos en una comunidad sagrada, es decir, una comunidad arraigada en la adoración genuina de Dios, una comunidad que vive en la justicia y la paz, el uno con el otro. Por lo tanto, debemos vivir como vecinos, respetando el uno al otro. El propósito último y remoto de esto, es también conocer, respetar y adorar a Dios nuestro creador.

Mientras que la vieja ley (alianza) fue dada a través de Moisés, la nueva ley (alianza) fue dada por Cristo. Dios se revela precisamente en su mandamiento en Cristo. Por lo tanto, como la plenitud del mandamiento de Dios, Cristo es la avenida a través la cual Dios nos recibe.

En nuestra segunda lectura, Pablo nos recuerda que Cristo es: “La plenitud de la sabiduría de Dios.” Los griegos buscaron esta sabiduría. Por desgracia, la rechazaron ignorantemente. Así que, en lugar de beneficiar de ella, fueron engañados por la sabiduría de este mundo.

Según Pablo, Cristo es la plenitud de la ley y la sabiduría de Dios. Entonces, quien lo encuentre y lo reciba, se llenará de sabiduría, y nunca caminará en la ignorancia. “Quien lo reciba no volverá a caminar en tinieblas” (Jn 8:12). La oscuridad se opone a la sabiduría. Así que, quien no haya recibido a Cristo la plenitud de sabiduría, aunque camine según la sabiduría de este mundo, vive en la oscuridad.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Juan narra al encuentro de Jesús con aquellos que profanan el Santuario de Dios. Su acción simplemente demuestra que es realmente la sabiduría de Dios, y la plenitud de la ley. Su celo lo distinguió de las autoridades. En lugar de representar el interés de Dios, representaban sus intereses económicos y sociales.

¿Qué aprendemos del Evangelio de hoy? En primer lugar, no debemos mantenernos indiferentes ante el mal, especialmente en la casa de Dios, en nuestros hogares, oficinas o en cualquier lugar. Además, no debemos permitir que nuestro interés personal destruya la santidad y la unidad de nuestra iglesia, familia, estado o país. La iglesia es la casa de Dios y un lugar de adoración. Debemos santificarla y respetarla. También, nos recuerda que nuestro cuerpo y el cuerpo de Cristo, son el templo de Dios. Entonces, no debemos profanarlo.

Finalmente, hoy Cristo profetizó sobre de su propia muerte y resurrección: “Destruyan este templo, y lo levantaré en tres días.” Esta profecía se cumplirá durante el misterio Pascual. Por lo tanto, el Evangelio de hoy mantiene en perspectiva los acontecimientos de esta temporada. Nos recuerda adónde nos dirigimos esta temporada, la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo.

Así que, a medida que avanzamos esta temporada, sigamos obedeciendo los mandamientos de Dios cumplidos en Jesucristo, la sabiduría perfecta. Aclamemos a Cristo: “¡Señor, tú tienes el mensaje de la vida eterna!”

Christ is Perfect Wisdom and the Fullness of the Law

As we continue our journey this season, on this third Sunday of Lent, we celebrate Christ the fullness of the law and the wisdom of God. Today, the Church calls us to rededicate ourselves to Christ. This is because He is the fulfillment of God’s commandment.

In our first reading from Exodus, God gave the Law to Moses for Israel. So, what is the purpose of the Law? The law was given to Israel to help them become wiser. It was also given to them to strengthen their relationship with God and organize their social and religious life.

Hence, the commandments of God are meant to form us into a sacred community. That is a community rooted in the genuine worship of God and a community that lives in justice and peace with one another. Therefore, we are to live as neighbors, respecting one another. The ultimate and remote purpose of this is to know, respect, and worship God, our creator. 

While the old law was given through Moses, the new Law (Covenant) given through and in Christ fulfills it. God reveals Himself precisely in His commandment. Hence, as the fulness of God’s commandments, Christ is the channel through which God receives and loves us.

In our second reading, Paul reminds us that Christ is: “The fullness of God’s wisdom.” The Greeks searched for this wisdom. Unfortunately, they ignorantly rejected Him. So, instead of benefiting from Him, they were misled by the wisdom of this world.

According to Paul, Christ is the fullness of the law and the wisdom of God. So, whoever finds and receives him, will be filled with wisdom and never walk in ignorance. “Whoever receives him will never walk in darkness again” (Jn 8, 12). Darkness is opposed to wisdom. Whoever has not received Christ, the fullness of wisdom, though he walks according to the wisdom of this world, lives in darkness.

In today’s gospel, John narrates Jesus’ encounter with those profaning God’s Sanctuary. His action simply demonstrates that He is God’s wisdom and the fullness of the law. His zeal distinguished him from the authorities. Instead of representing God’s interest, they expressed their selfish economic and social interests. It also distinguishes him from temple pilgrims who simply visited the temple without real devotion to God.

What do we learn from today’s gospel? First, we are not supposed to keep quiet or remain indifferent while things go wrong. This is especially in the house of God, our homes, offices, or any place at all. Also, we must not allow our personal intention to destroy the sanity of our Church, family, state, or country. The Church is the house of God and a place of worship. We must keep it holy and respect it. Also, it reminds us that our body and the body of Christ is the Temple of God. So, we must not defile it.

Finally, today Christ prophesied about his death and resurrection: “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it in three days.” This prophecy will be fulfilled during the paschal mystery. Therefore, today’s gospel keeps the events of this season in perspective. It reminds us of where we are heading to this season, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So, as we march forward this season, let us continue to abide by the commandments of God fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the perfect wisdom. Let us acclaim Christ: “You, Lord, have the message of eternal life!

Listen to Jesus, the Son of God

Today marks the beginning of the second week of our Journey with Christ. Today Christ is revealed through his transfiguration as the son of God. The only thing that God demands from us is: “Listen to him!” If we listen to Christ, we shall be successful in our journey with him this season.

In our first reading from Genesis, Abraham was tested, and he remained faithful to God. God did not require Abraham to do anything that he, as God, would not do. God’s command to Abraham to offer his only son prefigures how God would later offer his son for our salvation. God prevented the sacrifice of Isaac because Abraham’s faith was firm.

What do we learn from Abraham today? The first is that he was attentive to the Word of God and obeyed God’s command. The second is his trust in God. The third is his generosity towards God. This is a season to pause, and to ask God: “Please, Lord, what must I do to make you happy? The answer is simple. We must be ready to listen to God and to do what he asks us to do as Abraham did.

Our second reading is very encouraging because it is full of hope. This is especially during this season of Lent. Paul offers us three assurances: “There is no opposition; there is no condemnation, and there is no separation.” This is because: “God graciously gave His Son for us.” So, like Abraham, God was not selfish. Instead, He willingly gave up his Son for our sake: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” (Jn 3:16).

This means that God is ready to do anything good to save us. All that we need to do is to continue to listen to Christ attentively. God is prepared to make sure that we get to our destination this season because Christ is with us on our journey.

Today’s gospel from Mark presents the scene of the transfiguration of Jesus. He manifests his glory to three of his disciples. The transfiguration reflects the divinity of Jesus. Transfiguration is simply a glimpse of the gift and glory of God. Today, Christ reveals his future glory. However, to attain the fullness of this glory, He must first suffer and be crucified. This is a road that we must also walk to partake in this glory.

Like the second reading, today’s gospel is a message of hope. This is because God revealed to us the glory, which will be ours through Christ. God spoke eloquently and confirms the lordship of Jesus Christ: “This is my beloved…” However, He demands only one thing from us: “Listen to him!”

Listening to Christ means transforming our lives and changing our ways. It means living according to the Word of God we hear every day. Listening to Jesus means obeying His will and paying attention to what the Church teaches us every day.

So, Christ speaks to us through the poor and the marginalized, the defenseless, the sick, the old, abandoned children in our streets, and the millions of aborted babies worldwide. Christ speaks to us through our lonely neighbors who need some care. Christ speaks to us through families and communities in difficulties. Above all, Christ speaks to us through the sign of our time.

Finally, if we respond to these quickly, rather than being indifferent, then we have listened to Jesus Christ, the beloved son of God.  Through this, “we are walking in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.”

Escuchen a Jesús, el hijo de Dios

Hoy marca el comienzo de la segunda semana de nuestro viaje con Cristo. Hoy, Cristo es revelado a través de su transfiguración como el Hijo de Dios. Lo único que Dios nos exige es: “¡Escuchar a Cristo!” Si le escuchamos a Cristo, tendremos éxito en nuestro viaje con Él en este tiempo.

En nuestra primera lectura del libro de Génesis, Abraham fue puesto a prueba, y permaneció fiel a Dios. Dios no le requirió hacer nada que él mismo no haría. De hecho, el mandato a Abraham de ofrecer a su único hijo prefigura a cómo Dios más tarde ofrecería a su propio hijo único para nuestra salvación. Dios suspendió el sacrificio de Isaac, porque la fe de Abraham era firme.

¿Qué aprendemos de Abraham hoy? La primera es que, él estaba atento a la palabra de Dios, y obedeció el mandamiento de Dios. La segunda es su confianza en Dios, y su generosidad hacia Dios. Esta es una temporada para hacer una pausa, y para preguntarle a Dios: “Señor, ¿qué debo hacer para hacerte feliz? La respuesta es simple. Debemos estar listos para escucharle a Dios, y para hacer lo que él nos mandó como lo hizo Abraham.

Nuestra segunda lectura es muy alentadora, porque está llena de esperanza. Esto es especialmente, durante esta temporada de Cuaresma. Pablo nos ofrece tres garantías: “no hay oposición; no hay condenación; y no hay separación”. Esto es porque, “Dios generosamente ofreció su hijo por nosotros.” Así que, como Abraham, Dios no era egoísta. Más bien, voluntariamente, ofreció su hijo por nuestro bien: “Dios amó tanto al mundo que nos dio a su hijo único.” (Jn 3:16).

Esto significa que Dios está listo para hacer algo bueno para salvarnos. Todo lo que necesitamos hacer es seguir escuchando a Cristo atentamente. Dios está listo para asegurarse que, lleguemos a nuestro destino esta temporada, porque Cristo está con nosotros en nuestro viaje.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Marcos presenta la escena de la transfiguración de Jesús. Él manifestó su gloria a tres de sus discípulos. La Transfiguración refleja la divinidad de Jesús. La Transfiguración es simplemente una vislumbre de la gloria de Dios. Hoy, Cristo revela su gloria futura. Sin embargo, para alcanzar la plenitud de esta gloria, primero, debe sufrir y ser crucificado. Este es un camino que también debemos seguir para disfrutar esta gloria.

Al igual que la segunda lectura, el Evangelio de hoy es un mensaje de esperanza. Esto es porque, Dios nos reveló la gloria que será nuestra a través de Cristo. Dios habló elocuentemente y confirma el señorío de Jesucristo, “este es mi amado.” Sin embargo, nos exige una sola cosa, “¡Escúchenlo!”

Escuchar a Cristo significa transformar nuestras vidas, y cambiar nuestras actitudes. Significa vivir de acuerdo con la palabra de Dios que oímos todos los días. Escuchar a Jesús significa, obedecer su voluntad y prestar atención a lo que la Iglesia nos enseña cada día.

Así que, Cristo nos habla a través de los pobres y marginados, indefensos, los enfermos, los ancianos, los abandonados, los deambulantes en nuestras calles; a través de los millones de bebés abortados en todo el mundo. Cristo nos habla a través de nuestros vecinos solitarios que necesitan ayuda, de las familias y comunidades en dificultades. Sobre todo, Cristo nos habla a través del signo de nuestro tiempo.

Finalmente, si respondemos a estos rápidamente, en lugar de ser indiferentes, entonces hemos escuchado a Jesucristo, el amado hijo de Dios. Si hacemos esto bien, entonces, “Estamos caminando en la presencia del Señor en la tierra de los vivos.”

Renovemos nuestra Alianza con Dios

Hoy es el primer domingo de Cuaresma, una temporada de renovación. La temporada de Cuaresma nos provee la oportunidad de renovar nuestra “piel espiritualmente débil y cansada” para llevar una más durable para nuestro viaje. Por lo tanto, en este primer domingo de Cuaresma, la iglesia nos invita a renovar nuestra alianza, y relación con Dios durante esta temporada.

Nuestra primera lectura narra la alianza incondicional específicamente, entre Dios y Noé; y generalmente, entre Dios y la humanidad. Después del diluvio, Dios le prometió a la humanidad que nunca más destruiría toda la vida en la tierra con un diluvio. Dios dio el arcoíris como señal de la alianza, y una promesa que nunca inundará toda la tierra otra vez.

Una cosa interesante de esta alianza es que somos participes de ella.  Y que, aun en nuestro propio tiempo, todavía experimentamos el signo visible de esta alianza a través del arcoíris. Por desgracia, no hemos mantenido nuestra parte de esta alianza. Sin embargo, la buena nueva es que: “Si somos infieles él permanece fiel, porque él no puede negarse a sí mismo” (2 Tim 2:13). Dios nos ofrece otra oportunidad para renovar nuestro compromiso a nuestra alianza con él a través de Cristo, la nueva alianza. Esta renovación debe venir de un corazón sincero, en vez, de sólo nuestros labios.

En la segunda lectura de este domingo, Pedro nos recuerda la nueva alianza de Dios con nosotros a través de Cristo. Él pagó el precio para restaurarnos a Dios. En otras palabras, Cristo no sólo consolida la alianza general entre Dios y nosotros, también, amplió su horizonte. Lo hizo mediante la apertura de la fuente del bautismo a través del cual nos purifica y restaura con Dios. Esto es la renovación de la alianza por parte de Dios. Por lo tanto, todos los que fueron bautizados en el nombre de Jesucristo han participado en esta nueva alianza. Cada año, nos provee la oportunidad a través del tiempo cuaresmal a reflexionar sobre esta alianza y a renovar nuestro compromiso. Por eso, Pablo dice: “Ahora es el momento favorable; el día de la salvación”(2 Cor 6:2).

El Evangelio de Mateo narra brevemente la terrible experiencia de Jesús y, el sacrificio que hizo para prepararse para su misión. Para ser un digno cordero para la renovación de la alianza de Dios con su pueblo, Jesús tuvo que ser probado. Pedro dice claramente: “como el oro se prueba con fuego así y tu fe será probada (1 Pt 1:7). Por lo tanto, el Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que como Cristo se probó, nuestra fe debe ser probada. Cada día de nuestra vida, el diablo nos tienta y continuará especialmente durante esta temporada sagrada.

Esto no debe darnos miedo, porque el Espíritu Santo, quien ayudó a Cristo, está siempre disponible para ayudarnos. Mientras nos preparamos para renovar nuestra alianza con Dios, como Cristo, debemos permanecer en oración, ayuno y abstinencia. Debemos pedirle a Dios que nos conceda la fuerza para aguantar hasta al final de nuestra propia experiencia como hizo Cristo. Además, debemos pedirle al Espíritu Santo que, nos llene de humildad y paciencia esta temporada.

Por último, debemos estar preparados para identificar todo que lo hace difícil para cumplir nuestra propia parte de nuestra alianza con Dios. Debemos arrepentirnos de todo corazón, como la escritura dice hoy: “Ha llegado el momento…Arrepentirse y creer en la buena nueva”. Por lo tanto, hay que aprovechar este tiempo cuaresmal para pedirle a Dios perdón por todas las veces que no hemos sido fieles a Dios y a su alianza. Por tanto, alabemos al Señor diciéndole: “Tus caminos, Señor, son fidelidad y amor para los que guardan su alianza.”

Today is Ash Wednesday. So, we begin the season of Lent and a unique journey with Christ that will last for about six weeks. The Church reminds us that the season of Lent presents us with a golden opportunity to re-live Christ’s Paschal Mystery.

The season of Lent exposes us to a new dimension of our Christian life and journey. It also equips us for the glory of Easter. This is why the Holy Father, Pope Francis, tells us that: “Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all, it is a “time of grace” (Message for Lent, 2015). Today, we shall receive ashes as a sacramental sign of our conversion.

Our first reading from the prophet Joel is a call to repentance through fasting and abstinence. They are two essential characteristics and aspects of Lent. In this reading, the prophet informs us that God is waiting for us to return to him: “Come back to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping and mourning…turn to the Lord your God again for he is all tenderness and compassion.” As a loving father, he is ready to welcome us back if we chose to return to him. However, we have to show sincere repentance for all the times we have offended Him. Today, God has extended an invitation to us, and he expects us to respond positively.

In our second reading, Paul encourages us to reconcile with God. Most importantly, he reminds us that the season of Lent is a season of Grace and favor. He says: “As fellow workers, we beg you once again not to neglect the grace of God…now is the favorable time, this is, the day of salvation”. How can we reconcile with God this season? It is by reconciling with our neighbors, brothers, sisters, parents, and children. It is by showing concern for others and our world instead of being indifferent.

So, we have to reconcile with those we see as our arch-enemies. And also with all those who have offended us in one way or the other. On our part, we must be humble enough to ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. Therefore, this season affords us an excellent opportunity to rebuild our relationship with Christ and our neighbors. God is waiting. So, we can meet him through the sacrament of confession.

The gospel simply shows us the best ways to observe this season. First, it reminds us of our Christian duties during this period: prayer, abstinence, and charity. These are the means of edifying and strengthening our spiritual lives. Hence, Jesus gives us three important instructions to help us achieve this.

The first is: “Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice.” The second is: “Pray to your father, who is in that secret place.” The third is: “When you fast, do not put on a gloomy look…so that no one will know that you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret.” This means that, as our voluntary wish to walk with Christ, we must do it humbly and joyfully, so that all glory will be given to God alone.

Brothers and sisters, if we do this well, this season will indeed be a season of Grace and favor because God will surely hear our prayers and forgive us our sins. So, as we accept ash this Ash Wednesday, let us ask God for the Grace to begin and complete this journey during this Lenten period. Finally, and most importantly, our prayer throughout this season should be: “Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we have sinned.”

Let Us Renew Our Covenant With God This Season

Today is the first Sunday of Lent, a season of renewal. The season of Lent provides us this opportunity to shed off our “spiritually tired and weak skin” to wear a more durable one for our Journey. Therefore, on this first Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to renew our covenant and relationship with God during this season.

Our first reading recounts the unconditional covenant between God and Noah, and generally, between God and humanity. After the Flood, God promised humanity that He would never again destroy all life on earth with a Flood. God gave the rainbow as the sign of the covenant, a promise that the entire world would never flood again. It was also a reminder that God can and will judge sin (Gen 9, 8- 15; 2 Pt 2, 5).

One exciting thing about this covenant is that we share in it. Another exciting thing about it is that we still experience the rainbow, the visible sign of this covenant even in our time. Therefore, this season, God offers us another opportunity to renew our commitment to our covenant with Him through Christ, the New Covenant. This renewal must come from our sincere hearts, rather than from only our lips.

In the second reading of this Sunday, Peter reminds us of God’s New Covenant with us through Christ. He paid a great price to restore us to God. In other words, Christ did not only strengthen the general covenant between God and us but also widened its horizon. He did this by opening the spring of baptism through which we were purified and restored to God.

This is the renewal of the covenant on God’s Part. Hence, all those baptized in the name of Jesus Christ have taken part in this new covenant. Each year, the Church,  Christ’s bride, provides us the opportunity to reflect upon this covenant and renew our commitment to it through the period of Lent. This was why Paul told us on Ash Wednesday: “Do not neglect the grace of God that you have received. Now is the favorable time; the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6, 2).

Our gospel from Mark briefly narrates the ordeal of Jesus and the sacrifice he made in order to prepare himself for his mission and journey. To be a worthy lamb for the renewal of God’s covenant with his people, Jesus was tested too. Peter states this clearly: “As Gold is tested by fire, so shall your faith be (1 Pt 1, 7). Therefore, today’s gospel reminds us that as Christ was tested, so shall we, too, be tested. Every day of our lives, the devil tempts us and will continue especially, during this sacred season.

This should not make us afraid, because the Holy Spirit who helped Christ is always available to help us. As we prepare to renew our covenant with God, we must persist in prayer, fasting, and abstinence like Christ. We must ask God to grant us the strength to endure until the end of our ordeal as Christ did. We must also ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with humility, courage, and patience this season.

Finally, we must be ready to identify all that makes it difficult for us to keep our part of our covenant with God. We must repent of them as the scripture says today: “The time has come…Repent and believe the Good News.” Therefore, let us sincerely make use of this Lenten period to ask God for forgiveness for all the times we have not been unfaithful to our covenant with him. As we prepare to renew our commitment to this covenant, let us continue to praise him for his faithfulness, saying: “Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.”

Hoy es miércoles de ceniza. Así que, comenzamos el tiempo de Cuaresma y un viaje especial con Cristo que durará unas seis semanas. La Iglesia nos recuerda que el tiempo de Cuaresma nos presenta una oportunidad de oro, para revivir el misterio pascual de Cristo.

La temporada de Cuaresma nos expone a una nueva dimensión de nuestra vida cristiana. También nos equipa para la gloria de la Pascua. Por eso, el Santo Papa Francisco nos dice que: “La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación para toda la iglesia, para cada comunidad y cada creyente. Sobre todo, es un “tiempo de la gracia” (Cuaresma, 2015). Hoy, recibiremos la ceniza como un signo sacramental de nuestra conversión.

La primera lectura del Profeta Joel es un llamado al arrepentimiento a través del ayuno y la abstinencia. Son dos características y aspectos importantes de la Cuaresma. El profeta nos informa que Dios está esperando que volvamos a él: “Convierten a mí de todo corazón, con ayuno, con llanto, con luto…Conviértanse a su Dios porque es compasivo y misericordioso”. Como un padre amoroso, está listo para acogernos si decidimos volver a él. Sin embargo, tenemos que mostrar un sincero arrepentimiento por todas las veces que le hemos ofendido. Hoy, Dios nos ha extendido una invitación, y espera que respondamos positivamente.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo nos alienta a reconciliarnos con Dios. Lo más importante, él nos recuerda que el tiempo de Cuaresma es un tiempo de gracia y favor. Dice: “Como compañeros, te rogamos una vez más, que no descuides la gracia de Dios… ahora es el tiempo favorable, esto es, el día de la salvación”. ¿Cómo podamos reconciliarnos con Dios esta temporada? Debemos reconciliarnos con nuestros prójimos, hermanos, padres, e hijos. Es un tiempo para preocuparnos por los demás, y por nuestro mundo, en lugar de ser indiferente.

Lo más importante, es reconciliarnos con aquellos que hemos declarado nuestros archienemigos, y todos aquellos que nos han ofendido de una manera u otra. Por nuestra parte, también, debemos ser lo suficientemente humildes para pedir perdón a los que hemos ofendido. Por lo tanto, este tiempo nos ofrece una gran oportunidad para reconstruir tanto nuestra relación con Cristo, y con nuestros prójimos. Dios está esperando. Así que, podamos encontrarlo a través del sacramento de la confesión.

El Evangelio simplemente nos muestra las mejores maneras de observar esta temporada. En primer lugar, nos recuerda nuestros deberes cristianos durante este tiempo que incluye: la oración, la abstinencia y la caridad. Estos son los medios para edificar y fortalecer nuestras vidas espirituales.

Jesús nos da tres instrucciones importantes para ayudarnos lograr esto. La primera es: “Cuidan que no practicar su buena obra delante de los hombres, para ser vistos por ellos”. La segunda es: “Oran a su padre que está en ese lugar secreto”. La tercera es: “Cuando ayunan, no andan cabizbajos…que nadie sabrá que están ayunando excepto tu padre que ve todo lo que se hace en secreto.” Esto significa que, dado que es nuestro deseo voluntario de caminar con Cristo, debemos hacerlo humildemente y gozosamente, para que, toda gloria sea dada a solo Dios.

Hermanos, si hacemos esto bien, esta temporada será una temporada de gracia y favor porque, Dios seguramente oirá nuestras oraciones y nos perdonará nuestros pecados. Así que, mientras que aceptamos la ceniza sobre nuestras caras este miércoles, pidamos a Dios la gracia para comenzar, y para completar este viaje durante este tiempo de Cuaresma. Finalmente, y más importante, nuestra oración a lo largo de esta temporada debe ser: “Ten piedad de nosotros Señor, porque hemos pecado.”
