Renovemos nuestra Alianza con Dios

Hoy es el primer domingo de Cuaresma, una temporada de renovación. La temporada de Cuaresma nos provee la oportunidad de renovar nuestra “piel espiritualmente débil y cansada” para llevar una más durable para nuestro viaje. Por lo tanto, en este primer domingo de Cuaresma, la iglesia nos invita a renovar nuestra alianza, y relación con Dios durante esta temporada.

Nuestra primera lectura narra la alianza incondicional específicamente, entre Dios y Noé; y generalmente, entre Dios y la humanidad. Después del diluvio, Dios le prometió a la humanidad que nunca más destruiría toda la vida en la tierra con un diluvio. Dios dio el arcoíris como señal de la alianza, y una promesa que nunca inundará toda la tierra otra vez.

Una cosa interesante de esta alianza es que somos participes de ella.  Y que, aun en nuestro propio tiempo, todavía experimentamos el signo visible de esta alianza a través del arcoíris. Por desgracia, no hemos mantenido nuestra parte de esta alianza. Sin embargo, la buena nueva es que: “Si somos infieles él permanece fiel, porque él no puede negarse a sí mismo” (2 Tim 2:13). Dios nos ofrece otra oportunidad para renovar nuestro compromiso a nuestra alianza con él a través de Cristo, la nueva alianza. Esta renovación debe venir de un corazón sincero, en vez, de sólo nuestros labios.

En la segunda lectura de este domingo, Pedro nos recuerda la nueva alianza de Dios con nosotros a través de Cristo. Él pagó el precio para restaurarnos a Dios. En otras palabras, Cristo no sólo consolida la alianza general entre Dios y nosotros, también, amplió su horizonte. Lo hizo mediante la apertura de la fuente del bautismo a través del cual nos purifica y restaura con Dios. Esto es la renovación de la alianza por parte de Dios. Por lo tanto, todos los que fueron bautizados en el nombre de Jesucristo han participado en esta nueva alianza. Cada año, nos provee la oportunidad a través del tiempo cuaresmal a reflexionar sobre esta alianza y a renovar nuestro compromiso. Por eso, Pablo dice: “Ahora es el momento favorable; el día de la salvación”(2 Cor 6:2).

El Evangelio de Mateo narra brevemente la terrible experiencia de Jesús y, el sacrificio que hizo para prepararse para su misión. Para ser un digno cordero para la renovación de la alianza de Dios con su pueblo, Jesús tuvo que ser probado. Pedro dice claramente: “como el oro se prueba con fuego así y tu fe será probada (1 Pt 1:7). Por lo tanto, el Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que como Cristo se probó, nuestra fe debe ser probada. Cada día de nuestra vida, el diablo nos tienta y continuará especialmente durante esta temporada sagrada.

Esto no debe darnos miedo, porque el Espíritu Santo, quien ayudó a Cristo, está siempre disponible para ayudarnos. Mientras nos preparamos para renovar nuestra alianza con Dios, como Cristo, debemos permanecer en oración, ayuno y abstinencia. Debemos pedirle a Dios que nos conceda la fuerza para aguantar hasta al final de nuestra propia experiencia como hizo Cristo. Además, debemos pedirle al Espíritu Santo que, nos llene de humildad y paciencia esta temporada.

Por último, debemos estar preparados para identificar todo que lo hace difícil para cumplir nuestra propia parte de nuestra alianza con Dios. Debemos arrepentirnos de todo corazón, como la escritura dice hoy: “Ha llegado el momento…Arrepentirse y creer en la buena nueva”. Por lo tanto, hay que aprovechar este tiempo cuaresmal para pedirle a Dios perdón por todas las veces que no hemos sido fieles a Dios y a su alianza. Por tanto, alabemos al Señor diciéndole: “Tus caminos, Señor, son fidelidad y amor para los que guardan su alianza.”

Today is Ash Wednesday. So, we begin the season of Lent and a unique journey with Christ that will last for about six weeks. The Church reminds us that the season of Lent presents us with a golden opportunity to re-live Christ’s Paschal Mystery.

The season of Lent exposes us to a new dimension of our Christian life and journey. It also equips us for the glory of Easter. This is why the Holy Father, Pope Francis, tells us that: “Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all, it is a “time of grace” (Message for Lent, 2015). Today, we shall receive ashes as a sacramental sign of our conversion.

Our first reading from the prophet Joel is a call to repentance through fasting and abstinence. They are two essential characteristics and aspects of Lent. In this reading, the prophet informs us that God is waiting for us to return to him: “Come back to me with all your heart, fasting, weeping and mourning…turn to the Lord your God again for he is all tenderness and compassion.” As a loving father, he is ready to welcome us back if we chose to return to him. However, we have to show sincere repentance for all the times we have offended Him. Today, God has extended an invitation to us, and he expects us to respond positively.

In our second reading, Paul encourages us to reconcile with God. Most importantly, he reminds us that the season of Lent is a season of Grace and favor. He says: “As fellow workers, we beg you once again not to neglect the grace of God…now is the favorable time, this is, the day of salvation”. How can we reconcile with God this season? It is by reconciling with our neighbors, brothers, sisters, parents, and children. It is by showing concern for others and our world instead of being indifferent.

So, we have to reconcile with those we see as our arch-enemies. And also with all those who have offended us in one way or the other. On our part, we must be humble enough to ask for forgiveness from those we have offended. Therefore, this season affords us an excellent opportunity to rebuild our relationship with Christ and our neighbors. God is waiting. So, we can meet him through the sacrament of confession.

The gospel simply shows us the best ways to observe this season. First, it reminds us of our Christian duties during this period: prayer, abstinence, and charity. These are the means of edifying and strengthening our spiritual lives. Hence, Jesus gives us three important instructions to help us achieve this.

The first is: “Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice.” The second is: “Pray to your father, who is in that secret place.” The third is: “When you fast, do not put on a gloomy look…so that no one will know that you are fasting except your father who sees all that is done in secret.” This means that, as our voluntary wish to walk with Christ, we must do it humbly and joyfully, so that all glory will be given to God alone.

Brothers and sisters, if we do this well, this season will indeed be a season of Grace and favor because God will surely hear our prayers and forgive us our sins. So, as we accept ash this Ash Wednesday, let us ask God for the Grace to begin and complete this journey during this Lenten period. Finally, and most importantly, our prayer throughout this season should be: “Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we have sinned.”

Let Us Renew Our Covenant With God This Season

Today is the first Sunday of Lent, a season of renewal. The season of Lent provides us this opportunity to shed off our “spiritually tired and weak skin” to wear a more durable one for our Journey. Therefore, on this first Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to renew our covenant and relationship with God during this season.

Our first reading recounts the unconditional covenant between God and Noah, and generally, between God and humanity. After the Flood, God promised humanity that He would never again destroy all life on earth with a Flood. God gave the rainbow as the sign of the covenant, a promise that the entire world would never flood again. It was also a reminder that God can and will judge sin (Gen 9, 8- 15; 2 Pt 2, 5).

One exciting thing about this covenant is that we share in it. Another exciting thing about it is that we still experience the rainbow, the visible sign of this covenant even in our time. Therefore, this season, God offers us another opportunity to renew our commitment to our covenant with Him through Christ, the New Covenant. This renewal must come from our sincere hearts, rather than from only our lips.

In the second reading of this Sunday, Peter reminds us of God’s New Covenant with us through Christ. He paid a great price to restore us to God. In other words, Christ did not only strengthen the general covenant between God and us but also widened its horizon. He did this by opening the spring of baptism through which we were purified and restored to God.

This is the renewal of the covenant on God’s Part. Hence, all those baptized in the name of Jesus Christ have taken part in this new covenant. Each year, the Church,  Christ’s bride, provides us the opportunity to reflect upon this covenant and renew our commitment to it through the period of Lent. This was why Paul told us on Ash Wednesday: “Do not neglect the grace of God that you have received. Now is the favorable time; the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6, 2).

Our gospel from Mark briefly narrates the ordeal of Jesus and the sacrifice he made in order to prepare himself for his mission and journey. To be a worthy lamb for the renewal of God’s covenant with his people, Jesus was tested too. Peter states this clearly: “As Gold is tested by fire, so shall your faith be (1 Pt 1, 7). Therefore, today’s gospel reminds us that as Christ was tested, so shall we, too, be tested. Every day of our lives, the devil tempts us and will continue especially, during this sacred season.

This should not make us afraid, because the Holy Spirit who helped Christ is always available to help us. As we prepare to renew our covenant with God, we must persist in prayer, fasting, and abstinence like Christ. We must ask God to grant us the strength to endure until the end of our ordeal as Christ did. We must also ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with humility, courage, and patience this season.

Finally, we must be ready to identify all that makes it difficult for us to keep our part of our covenant with God. We must repent of them as the scripture says today: “The time has come…Repent and believe the Good News.” Therefore, let us sincerely make use of this Lenten period to ask God for forgiveness for all the times we have not been unfaithful to our covenant with him. As we prepare to renew our commitment to this covenant, let us continue to praise him for his faithfulness, saying: “Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.”

Hoy es miércoles de ceniza. Así que, comenzamos el tiempo de Cuaresma y un viaje especial con Cristo que durará unas seis semanas. La Iglesia nos recuerda que el tiempo de Cuaresma nos presenta una oportunidad de oro, para revivir el misterio pascual de Cristo.

La temporada de Cuaresma nos expone a una nueva dimensión de nuestra vida cristiana. También nos equipa para la gloria de la Pascua. Por eso, el Santo Papa Francisco nos dice que: “La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación para toda la iglesia, para cada comunidad y cada creyente. Sobre todo, es un “tiempo de la gracia” (Cuaresma, 2015). Hoy, recibiremos la ceniza como un signo sacramental de nuestra conversión.

La primera lectura del Profeta Joel es un llamado al arrepentimiento a través del ayuno y la abstinencia. Son dos características y aspectos importantes de la Cuaresma. El profeta nos informa que Dios está esperando que volvamos a él: “Convierten a mí de todo corazón, con ayuno, con llanto, con luto…Conviértanse a su Dios porque es compasivo y misericordioso”. Como un padre amoroso, está listo para acogernos si decidimos volver a él. Sin embargo, tenemos que mostrar un sincero arrepentimiento por todas las veces que le hemos ofendido. Hoy, Dios nos ha extendido una invitación, y espera que respondamos positivamente.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo nos alienta a reconciliarnos con Dios. Lo más importante, él nos recuerda que el tiempo de Cuaresma es un tiempo de gracia y favor. Dice: “Como compañeros, te rogamos una vez más, que no descuides la gracia de Dios… ahora es el tiempo favorable, esto es, el día de la salvación”. ¿Cómo podamos reconciliarnos con Dios esta temporada? Debemos reconciliarnos con nuestros prójimos, hermanos, padres, e hijos. Es un tiempo para preocuparnos por los demás, y por nuestro mundo, en lugar de ser indiferente.

Lo más importante, es reconciliarnos con aquellos que hemos declarado nuestros archienemigos, y todos aquellos que nos han ofendido de una manera u otra. Por nuestra parte, también, debemos ser lo suficientemente humildes para pedir perdón a los que hemos ofendido. Por lo tanto, este tiempo nos ofrece una gran oportunidad para reconstruir tanto nuestra relación con Cristo, y con nuestros prójimos. Dios está esperando. Así que, podamos encontrarlo a través del sacramento de la confesión.

El Evangelio simplemente nos muestra las mejores maneras de observar esta temporada. En primer lugar, nos recuerda nuestros deberes cristianos durante este tiempo que incluye: la oración, la abstinencia y la caridad. Estos son los medios para edificar y fortalecer nuestras vidas espirituales.

Jesús nos da tres instrucciones importantes para ayudarnos lograr esto. La primera es: “Cuidan que no practicar su buena obra delante de los hombres, para ser vistos por ellos”. La segunda es: “Oran a su padre que está en ese lugar secreto”. La tercera es: “Cuando ayunan, no andan cabizbajos…que nadie sabrá que están ayunando excepto tu padre que ve todo lo que se hace en secreto.” Esto significa que, dado que es nuestro deseo voluntario de caminar con Cristo, debemos hacerlo humildemente y gozosamente, para que, toda gloria sea dada a solo Dios.

Hermanos, si hacemos esto bien, esta temporada será una temporada de gracia y favor porque, Dios seguramente oirá nuestras oraciones y nos perdonará nuestros pecados. Así que, mientras que aceptamos la ceniza sobre nuestras caras este miércoles, pidamos a Dios la gracia para comenzar, y para completar este viaje durante este tiempo de Cuaresma. Finalmente, y más importante, nuestra oración a lo largo de esta temporada debe ser: “Ten piedad de nosotros Señor, porque hemos pecado.”

Through His Mercy, Christ Heals And Restores Us

On this 6^th Sunday, the church continues to remind us that Jesus is a friend of all. So, He is willing to do the unimaginable to save us. Hence, the church calls us to make Jesus our role model by caring for the sick.

Our first reading and gospel have a lot in common. Both of them referred to the hopeless situation caused by leprosy. In Jesus’s time, leprosy was a dreaded disease such as Ebola, Zika,  HIVAIDS and the Corona Virus which has killed many and paralyzed our world today. Contacting leprosy was a matter of life and death. Though it was a physical sickness, according to Jewish religious beliefs leprosy was broadly associated with sin. That is, leprosy was a punishment for a sin committed by its victim.

Hence, the immediate consequence of suffering from leprosy was that the patient automatically becomes an outcast and isolated. “As long as the disease lasts, the patient must live apart.” This is because it was believed that the person would contaminate others. Sadly, according to the law, the victim must identify and stigmatize himself by announcing “Unclean, unclean.”

Is this different from the stigma we subject people to today?  It seems that more sick people die due to stigma than from the actual disease they suffered. Yet, the truth is that apart from physical leprosy, because of our sins we are all lepers and outcasts. However, Christ touches and heals us through his mercy.

In the second reading, Paul implores us, “Take me as your model as I take Christ.” He presents himself to us as a model of sacrifice and care. Being a model means being close to people, especially in their weakness, sickness, and ensuring that they do not feel rejected. He is a model that rejects the gospel of exclusion, favoritism, racial segregation, profiling, stigmatization of the sick or anyone at all.

He is not a model that wishes the death of the sick for his comfort. Instead, He is a model of care, tenderness, and love for them. This is why Paul says, “I try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious of my advantage, but for the advantage of everybody, so that they may be saved.” This is precisely what Christ did. He offered himself in order to deliver us from all that enslaves us. Paul replicated this with his life and encourages us to do the same.

In the gospel, Jesus continues to heal. Today, He encountered a leper. Instead of avoiding or stigmatizing the leper, he touched and healed him. The humble petition of the leper touched him: “If you want, you can cure me.” As a compassionate savior and master, Jesus responded with both words and actions: “!Of course, I want to be cured!”

By healing the leper, Jesus makes a statement that the leper was not excluded, but that he was equally destined for salvation. Jesus was different from the Levitical priests whose duty was to pronounce judgment, stigmatize, and isolate the leper. On the contrary, He communicated the love and mercy of God in signs that speak more than words.

How should we treat the sick, the weak, the poor, and those rejected by society? We must show them mercy and help them as Jesus did. Through his mercy and compassion, Jesus is always ready to free us from whatever makes us unclean. Therefore, let us praise him: “You are my refuge, O Lord; you fill me with the joy of salvation.

A través de su misericordia, Cristo sana y nos restaura

En este sexto domingo, la Iglesia nos sigue recordando que Jesús es el amigo de todos. Él está dispuesto a hacer lo inimaginable para salvarnos. Por lo tanto, la Iglesia nos llama a hacer de Jesús nuestro modelo a seguir, cuidando a los enfermos.

Nuestra primera lectura y el Evangelio tienen mucho en común. Ambos se refirieron a la situación desesperada causada por la lepra. En el tiempo de Jesús, la lepra era una enfermedad temida como Ébola, Zika, Sida y el Corona Virus que ha matado muchas personas y paralizó nuestro mundo. Ponerse en contacto con la lepra era una cuestión de vida o muerte. Aunque era una enfermedad física, según las creencias religiosas judías, la lepra era muy asociada con el pecado. Es decir, que la lepra era un castigo por un pecado cometido por su víctima.

Por lo tanto, la consecuencia inmediata del sufrimiento de la lepra fue que el paciente se convierte automáticamente en un paria: “Siempre y cuanto la enfermedad dure él debe vivir aparte.” Esto se debe a que se creía que la persona contaminaría a los demás. Lamentablemente, según la ley, la víctima debe identificarse y estigmatizarse anunciando, “soy impuro, soy impuro”.

¿Es diferente del estigma al que sometemos a la gente hoy? De hecho, parece que más personas enfermas mueren debido al estigma, que a la enfermedad real que sufrieron. Sin embargo, la verdad es que, aparte de la lepra física, a través del pecado, “todos somos leprosos y parias.” Sin embargo, a través de su misericordia, Cristo nos toca y nos sana.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo nos implora: “Tómame como tu modelo como yo tomo a Cristo.” Es un modelo de sacrificio y cuidado para los demás. Está siendo cercano a la gente especialmente en su debilidad, enfermedad, y asegurándose de que no se sienten rechazados. Es un modelo que rechaza el Evangelio de la exclusión, el favoritismo, la segregación racial, o el estigma sobre los enfermos o cualquier persona en absoluto.

No es un modelo que desea la muerte de los enfermos para nuestra comodidad. Más bien es un modelo de cuidado, ternura y amor para ellos. Por eso, Pablo dice: “trato de ser útil a todo el mundo en todo momento, no ansioso de mi propia ventaja; pero para la ventaja de todo el mundo, para que puedan ser salvados.” Esto es exactamente lo que Cristo hizo. Se ofreció para librarnos de todo lo que nos esclaviza. Pablo repitió esto con su vida, y nos alienta a hacer lo mismo.

En el Evangelio, Jesús continúa sanando. Hoy se encontró con un leproso. En lugar de evitar, rechazar o estigmatizar al leproso, él lo tocó y lo curó. La humilde petición del leproso le tocó: “Si quieres, sáname”. Como Salvador y maestro compasivo, Jesús respondió con ambas palabras y acción: “¡Yo quiero, sea curado!

Al curar al leproso, Jesús hace una declaración, que el leproso no fue excluido, sino que estaba igualmente destinado a la salvación. Jesús era diferente de los sacerdotes Levíticos, cuyo deber era pronunciar el juicio, aislar y estigmatizar al leproso. Por el contrario, comunicó el amor y la misericordia de Dios en signos que hablan más que palabras.

¿Cómo debemos tratar a los enfermos, a los débiles, a los pobres y a los rechazados por la sociedad? Debemos mostrarles misericordia, y ayudarlos como Jesús lo hizo. A través de su misericordia y compasión, Jesús siempre está dispuesto a liberarnos de lo que nos esclavizan. Por lo tanto, vamos a alabarlo: “Tú eres mi refugio, oh Señor; me llenas con la alegría de la salvación.”

Cristo Libra y Nos Llama A Servir A Los Demás Libremente

En este quinto domingo del tiempo ordinario, la Santa Madre Iglesia nos invita a alabar a Cristo, quien sigue haciendo bien. Él, y sus apóstoles llevaron a cabo su misión como una responsabilidad y no como una carga o sólo por salario. Por lo tanto, él libera y nos llama a servir a los demás libremente.

La primera lectura nos presenta el dilema de Job, un siervo inocente y fiel de Dios. En lugar de dejar la imagen del sufrimiento y la miseria, la historia de Job debe elevar nuestra esperanza y confianza en el poder salvador de Dios.

La fe de Job fue severamente probada por el demonio. El perdió todo. Como hombre, Job se quejó como la mayoría de nosotros: “Acostado en la cama me pregunto, ¿cuándo será el día? Levantándose pienso, cómo lentamente viene la tarde. Recuerda que mi vida no es más que un soplo, y que mis ojos nunca verán gozo.” Sin embargo, y para la gloria de Dios, Job no perdió su fe en Dios.

El caso de Job nos recuerda nuestras luchas diarias con los problemas de la vida. Sobre todo, nos recuerda, de lo que a veces nos parece el “grave silencio o ausencia de Dios” en nuestras vidas. Son momentos terribles que nos dejan hacer preguntas como: Dios, ¿dónde estás? ¿Por qué yo? ¿Qué he hecho mal? Dios responde a estas preguntas a su propio tiempo.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo expresó enérgicamente su voluntad de predicar el Evangelio. Exclamó: “¡Maldición sobre mí, si no predico el Evangelio!” Su historia es como la de un hombre que sobrevivió a una enfermedad, y dedicó su vida a ayudar a otros pacientes. Una vez más, él es como un doctor que descubrió una vacuna para una cierta enfermedad y prometió ofrecerla gratuitamente a todos para salvarlos.

Pablo estaba “espiritualmente enfermo” hasta que providencialmente encontró a Cristo. Este encuentro transformó su vida y fortaleció su fe. Así que, se dedicó a la predicación de la buena nueva. Este es su testimonio: ” Por el bien de evangelio, me hice todas las cosas a todos los hombres, con el fin de salvar algunos a cualquier costo, y para tener una parte en su bendición.” Así que, más que por salario, Pablo vio su llamado como una responsabilidad por la salvación de los demás. Era un predicador de itinerario por excelencia, que siempre tenía hambre de la conversión de las almas para Cristo.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús incansablemente fue enseñando, sanando, entregando y empoderando a la gente. Esto incluye a la suegra de Pedro. También, Jesús vio su ministerio como una responsabilidad, no como un asalariado. Jesús vivió su misión con pasión y por el bienestar de su pueblo.

Como Jesús y Pablo, debemos ver nuestra llamada y misión como una responsabilidad, en lugar de un trabajo por un salario, o para la recompensa mundana como su fin. Los salarios o las recompensas no se refieren solamente a dinero o cosas materiales. Buscar deliberadamente alabanzas para nuestro trabajo y misión, es una manera de exigir salarios también. Si lo hacemos, ya tenemos nuestros salarios. Por lo tanto, cuando atraemos la atención indebida a nosotros mismos por el trabajo que hacemos, también es una manera de ganar un salario por lo que simplemente debe ser nuestra responsabilidad.

Jesús predicó, libró y sanó la gente de todo tipo de enfermedades y problemas. No había nadie que le encontró con fe que no sanó. Si Jesús debe sanarnos, debemos tener fe en él. Además, si la buena nueva debe liberarnos, también debemos creerla.

El poder de Jesús sigue siendo el mismo hoy. Él está listo para curar a aquellos que vienen a él en fe. Él está listo para tener un encuentro que cambia la vida con los que están dispuestos a acercarse a él con humildad. Por lo tanto, “Alabemos al Señor que sana nuestros corazones quebrantados.”

Christ Liberates And Calls Us To Serve Others Freely

On this fifth Sunday of ordinary time, the holy mother church invites us to praise Christ, who continues doing good. He and his apostles carried out their mission as a responsibility and not as a burden or just for wages. Therefore, he liberates and calls us to serve others freely.

The first reading presents us with the dilemma of Job, an innocent and faithful servant of God. Rather than leave the image of suffering and misery, the story of Job should raise our hope and trust in the saving power of God.

The devil severely tested Job’s faith. He lost everything. As a man, Job complained as most of us would do: “Lying in bed, I wonder when it will be daylight. Rising I think, how slowly evening comes. Remember that my life is but a breath, and that my eyes will never see joy.” However, and to the glory of God, Job did not lose his faith in God.

Job’s case reminds us of our own daily struggles with the problems of life. Above all, it reminds us that, at times, it seems to us as the “grave silence or absence of God” in our lives. They are terrible moments that make us ask questions like, God, where are you? Why me? What have I done wrong? God answers these questions at his own time.

In the second reading, Paul strongly expressed his willingness to preach the gospel. He exclaims: “Curse upon me if I do not preach the gospel!” His story is like that of a man who survived a terrible disease and dedicated his life to helping other patients. Again, he is like a doctor who discovered a life-saving vaccine for a particular illness and vowed to offer it free of charge to others to save them.

Paul was “spiritually sick” until he providentially encountered Christ. This encounter transformed his life and strengthened his faith. So, he dedicated himself to the preaching of the good news. This is his testimony: “For the sake of the gospel I made myself all things to all men, in order to save some at any cost, and to have a share in its blessing.” So, rather than for wages, Paul saw his call as responsibility towards others’ salvation. He was a full-time itinerary preacher who was always hungry for the conversion of souls for Christ.

In today’s gospel, Jesus tirelessly went about teaching, healing, delivering, and empowering people. This includes the mother-in-law of Peter. Also, Jesus saw his ministry as a responsibility, not principally as a wage earner for him. So, above everything, he was passionate about it, and about the welfare of his people.

Like Jesus and Paul, we ought to see our call and mission as a responsibility, instead of a burden or a wage-earner, or solely for mundane reward. Wages or rewards does not refer to only money or material things. Deliberately seeking praise for our work and mission is a way of demanding wages too. If we do so, we have already received our wages. So, when we attract undue attention to ourselves for the work we do, it is also a way of gaining a salary for what merely ought to be our responsibility.

Jesus preached, healed, and delivered people from all kinds of infirmities and problems. No one encountered him with faith without being healed. If Jesus must heal us, we too must have faith in him. Also, If the good news must liberate us, we must believe it.

The power of Jesus is still the same today. He is ready to heal those who come to him in faith. He is prepared to have a life-changing encounter with those who are prepared to approach him with humility. Therefore, let us “praise the Lord who heals our broken hearts.”

Pay Attention to Christ and His Authentic Prophets

On this 4^th Sunday of ordinary time, the church encourages us to listen attentively to Christ. He is our teacher, who speaks with authority. Also, she reminds us of the consequences of speaking falsely in the Lord’s name.

Our first reading from Deuteronomy is one of those passages in the bible, referred to as the messianic prophecies. Through this prophecy from Moses, God promised us the messiah. This promise was fulfilled in Christ. On his part, Christ called authentic ministers to be his prophets. So, we need to pay attention to these genuine prophets. Hence: “Those who will not listen to the words of the prophets shall be answerable to me for it.”

Unfortunately, today many claim to be God’s prophets. God knew this beforehand that such false prophets will arise. So, He was clear about their fate: “Those who presume to say in my name what I have not commanded them to say shall die.”

The question is, how do we know and distinguish false prophets? Matthew gives us a clue: “Beware of false prophets. You will know them by their fruits” (7: 15-20). So, this calls for wisdom, vigilance, discernment, and paying attention to the church.

Today’s second reading is very important in this regard. Paul gave an outstanding counsel about celibacy and marriage. However, at the beginning of this counsel, Paul was wise to add: “Now concerning the unmarried, I do not have a command from the Lord (I Cor 7: 25).” After this, he proceeded to give his wise opinion.

As a prophet, Paul knew the consequence of saying, “Thus says the Lord” when the Lord did not command him to speak. He simply gave his opinions, which was a wise thing to do. Paul did not have to be false by saying that God commanded him to speak. Neither did he need to deceive anyone to make his point. Yet, his points were clear.

In today’s gospel, Jesus was passionate about his people. He never deceived them or made false claims. Instead, in contrast to the scribes and Pharisees, He taught with authority. This was not based on worldly credentials or his ability to cite precedents. His only credential was that he is the Son of God. His authority came from his father. Hence, a true prophet should rely principally on God.

Therefore, we must discern every prophecy and evaluate them based on God’s word in the scriptures. Whatever is against the plain sense of the scripture, or any prophesy that promotes an unhealthy lifestyle and shallow spirituality, obviously cannot be from God.

Unfortunately, even authentic prophets can also err. Surely, they can, when they lose focus and becomes very proud. When one stops listing to Christ, he or she begins to listen to him or herself. Then, to make up for one’s emptiness, one gives his or her word in God’s name.

So, let us continue to listen to Jesus and pay attention only to his authentic prophets who speak for God. “O that today you listen to his voice, harden not your hearts.”

En este cuarto Domingo del tiempo ordinario, la iglesia continúa animándonos a escuchar atentamente a Cristo. Él es nuestro maestro que habla con autoridad. Además, nos recuerda las consecuencias de hablar falsamente en nombre del Señor.

Nuestra primera lectura de Deuteronomio es uno de esos pasajes en la biblia referidos como las profecías mesiánicas. A través de esta profecía de Moisés, Dios nos prometió al Mesías. Esta promesa se cumplió en Cristo. Por su parte, Cristo llamó a los ministros auténticos a ser sus profetas. Así que, debemos prestar atención a estos profetas auténticos. Porque: “Aquellos que no escuchen las palabras del Profeta, serán responsables ante mí por ello.”

Lamentablemente, hoy hay muchos que dicen que son profetas de Dios. Dios sabía esto de antemano que tales falsos profetas se levantarán. Por lo tanto, se habló claro sobre esto: “Aquellos que presumen de decir en mi nombre lo que no les he mandado a decir, morirán.”

La pregunta es, ¿cómo sabemos y distinguimos a los falsos profetas? Mateo nos da una pista: “Cuidado con los falsos profetas. Los conocerán por sus frutos” (7:15-20). Así que, esto requiere vigilancia, discernimiento y prestar atención a la iglesia.

La segunda lectura de hoy es muy importante en este sentido. Pablo dio un consejo maravilloso sobre el celibato y el matrimonio. Sin embargo, al comienzo de este consejo, Pablo fue sabio al añadir: Respecto a los solteros, no tengo mandato alguno del Señor…” (1 Co 7:25). Después de esto, procedió a dar su opinión sabia.

Aunque Pablo era un profeta, él sabía la consecuencia de decir “así dice el Señor”, cuando el Señor no le ordenó que hablar. Él simplemente dio su opinión que era algo sabio que hacer. Él no tenía que ser falso, por decir que Dios le mandó hablar. Tampoco, tenía que engañar a nadie para hacer su punto. Sin embargo, sus puntos eran claros.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús fue apasionado por su pueblo. Nunca los engañó ni hizo falsas afirmaciones. Más bien, en contraste con los escribas y los fariseos, enseñó con autoridad. Esto no se basó en las credenciales mundanas, ni en su capacidad para citar precedentes. Su única credencial era que él es el hijo de Dios. Su autoridad procedía de su padre. Así que, un verdadero profeta debe depender principalmente de Dios.

Por lo tanto, es importante que discernimos cada profecía y las evaluamos basándonos en la palabra de Dios en las escrituras. Lo que sea contra el sentido pleno de la escritura, o cualquier profecía que promueva un mal estilo de vida y espiritualidad superficial, obviamente no puede ser de Dios.

Por desgracia, aun un profeta auténtico también puede errar. Seguramente, él puede, cuando uno pierde el foco, y se vuelve muy orgulloso. Cuando deja de escucharle a Cristo, se comienza a escucharse a sí mismo. Entonces, para llenar su vacío, se da su propia palabra en nombre de Dios.

Continuemos escuchando a Jesús y prestemos atención sólo a sus auténticos profetas que hablan por Dios. “O que hoy escuchen su voz, no endurezcan sus corazones.”
