One figure that features in all the readings of this sixth Sunday of Easter is the Holy Spirit. Jesus is gradually approaching the end of his earthly ministry, so he promised to send us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the radiant glory that enlightens us. If we remain docile to Him, he will guide us in all our decisions and ways through this world.

In the first reading and the whole of Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles did not make any decisions without consulting the Holy Spirit. Also, they could not carry out any severe mission without the Holy Spirit. “The Holy Spirit and we have decided,” they said. The second reading begins thus: “In the Spirit, the angel took me to the top of an enormous mountain.” Of course, there is no way John could have seen these things without the help of the Holy Spirit.

As Christ was about to ascend to his father in today’s gospel, he promised to send the Advocate to his disciple. The Holy Spirit is the power of Jesus and, yet, a person in the Trinity. However, this does not mean that Christ’s era has come to an end because he is Lord at all times. Instead, it implies that he is not leaving us orphans.

This Sunday, Jesus assures us that the Holy Spirit will teach and remind us all that he taught us. So, all we need to do is to remain docile to the counsel of the Holy Spirit. We need to be attentive to him to read the signs of our time and succeed in our mission in our world today.

At no time in the history of the world is the need to listen to the Holy Spirit more important than our own time. As Christians, there are so many intrigues, perplexities, and dilemmas that we must contend with within our world today.  Only those who pay attention to the Holy Spirit understand these and where they are leading us to. So, this time calls for a special relationship with the Holy Spirit.

If we must survive the perils of our time, we must make the Holy Spirit our Advocate and our Partner. Only when the Holy Spirit of God is upon us can we sing and dance the way David did. Only through the help of the Holy Spirit can we preach well as the Apostles did. This is because “no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the power of the Holy Spirit” (I Cor 12, 3). Only through his inspiration can we see visions and have good dreams. Only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit can we face the struggles of this life and succeed in our missionary endeavors.

Finally, without listening to the Holy Spirit, we continue to go around in a vicious circle. Hence, if we allow Him to take the lead, we will walk well and live rightly. If we allow him to move us, we will move well. If we allow him to teach us, we will understand well; and if we allow him to inspire us, we shall achieve our goals and be where Christ is today.  “What gives life is the Spirit, the flesh profits nothing” (Jn 6: 63). So, each morning, when we wake up, we have to invoke and ask the Holy Spirit to direct and show us the best way to proceed.

Una figura que aparece en todas las lecturas de este sexto domingo de Pascua es el Espíritu Santo. Poco a poco, Jesús se acerca el final de su ministerio terrenal, por lo que prometió enviar el Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu Santo es la gloria radiante que nos ilumina. Si permanecemos dóciles a Él, nos guiará en todas nuestras decisiones y caminos en este mundo.

En la primera lectura y, de hecho, en todos los hechos de los apóstoles, los apóstoles no tomaron ninguna decisión sin consultar al Espíritu Santo. Además, no podían llevar a cabo cualquier misión sin el Espíritu Santo. “El Espíritu Santo y nosotros hemos decidido”, dijeron. La segunda lectura comienza así: “En el espíritu, el ángel me llevó a la cima de una montaña enorme.” Por supuesto, no hay ninguna manera en la que Juan habría visto estas cosas sin la ayuda del Espíritu Santo.

En el Evangelio, sabiendo que ya llego el tiempo para subir al cielo, Jesús prometió a enviar al abogado a sus discípulos. El Espíritu Santo es el poder de Jesús y una persona en la Trinidad. Sin embargo, esto no significa que la época de Jesús estaba llegando a su fin, porque, Él es Señor en todo momento. Por el contrario, implica que no nos deja huérfanos.

Este domingo, Jesús nos asegura que el Espíritu Santo nos enseñará y nos recordará todos lo que Él mismo nos había enseñado. Así que, todo lo que tenemos que hacer es, seguir siendo dócil a los consejos del Espíritu Santo. Tenemos que estar atentos a Él. Debemos estar atentos a él para poder leer y comprender los signos de nuestro tiempo a fin de ser exitoso en nuestra misión.

En ningún momento en la historia del mundo había la necesidad de escuchar al Espíritu Santo más que en nuestro tiempo. Como cristianos, hay tantas intrigas, perplejidades y dilemas que tenemos que resolver en nuestro mundo hoy. Sólo los que prestan atención al Espíritu Santo podrán entender las razones de esto, y a donde Él nos está conduciendo. Por lo tanto, este momento exige una relación especial con el Espíritu Santo.

Si vamos a sobrevivir los peligros de nuestro tiempo, tenemos que obedecer al Espíritu Santo, nuestro defensor y abogado. Es sólo cuando el Espíritu Santo de Dios está sobre nosotros que podemos cantar y bailar como lo hizo David. Sólo a través su ayuda y apoyo podemos predicar, como los apóstoles lo hicieron. Esto es porque, “Nadie puede decir que Jesús es el Señor excepto por el poder del Espíritu Santo” (I Cor 12:3). Sólo a través de su inspiración podemos ver visiones y tener buenos sueños. Es sólo a través de la dirección del Espíritu Santo que podemos enfrentar las luchas de esta vida y ser exitosos en nuestro esfuerzo misionero.

Finalmente, sin escuchar al Espíritu Santo podíamos seguir corriendo en un círculo vicioso. Por lo tanto, si le permitimos tomar la iniciativa, nosotros caminaremos y viviremos bien. Si le permitimos que nos mueva, nunca andaremos solos. Si le permitimos que nos enseñe, comprenderemos bien; y si le permitimos que nos inspire, alcanzaríamos nuestras metas y estaremos donde Cristo está. “El Espíritu es el que da vida; la carne para nada aprovecha” (Jn 6:63). Así que, cada mañana al despertarse, hay que invocar y pedir al Espiritu Santo dirigir y nos muestra lo mejor camino que hay que seguir.

The Risen Christ Gives Us A New Commandment

On this fifth Sunday of Easter, we continue glorifying the risen Christ. Gradually, Christ approaches his Ascension into heaven. Hence, He promised us a place with him in his kingdom if we persevere in our faith and love for one another.

In today’s first reading, Paul encourages us to remain faithful in our missions as disciples of Jesus Christ. He reminds us that: “We all have to experience many hardships before we enter the kingdom of God.” In other words, our suffering as Christians is the stepping stone to our victory. If we do not lose our faith during times of persecution and hardships, we shall be victorious. Therefore, love for the word and love for one another must sustain us as we march toward the kingdom of God.

Through the vision of John in today’s second reading, God gives us a glimpse of that kingdom that Paul spoke of in our first reading. God’s kingdom is the place of renewal where Christ will restore our lost glory. The New Jerusalem is the reward for Christians who bear an authentic witness to Christ. It is the hope of those who endure persecution for the sake of Christ. It is the hope of those who maintain their faith in Christ.

It is a place of comfort and consolation where the risen Christ “Will wipe away all tears from their eyes; there will be no more death and no more mourning or sadness.” Through this vision, we are once again encouraged and assured that God himself has a place for us in his kingdom. It is his wish that one day we too shall be with him in his eternal kingdom where he promised to make all things new for us. However, before then, we must endure the crucible of this world. 

In today’s gospel, Christ gives us a new commandment that will help us to overcome this world and march into the New Jerusalem. He says: “I give you a new commandment, love one another; you must love one another.” Through this, Christ reminds us that the only way we can overcome the tribulations and persecutions of this world is by remaining united in love.

In times of trials and persecution, love is the greatest virtue that sustains every Christian community. The early Christian community understood this very well. They obeyed Christ’s command and were successful in their missions. So, their admirers commented thus: “See how they love one another” (Tertullian, Apology: 39.7, 3 AD).

Any Christian community or family united in love will never lose its focus or faith in God. This is the love that Paul described in chapter thirteen of his first letter to the Corinthian Christian community. This love cares and does not exploit the other. It endures, forgives, empathizes, and sympathizes with the other. This love may be blind, but it remains very prudent, sensible, reasonable, and godly.

Finally, the love that Christ talks about here is an identification mark. Hence, He says: “By this love, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” In other words, it is what defines us as faithful disciples of Christ. Only those who love sincerely can enter the New Jerusalem that the risen Christ promised his people. This love marks the newness of life that Christ brings to all his people this Easter season.

En este quinto domingo de Pascua seguimos glorificando a Cristo resucitado. Cristo acerca poco a poco su ascensión al cielo. Por lo tanto, se nos prometió un lugar con Él en su reino si perseveramos en nuestra fe y en amor mutuo.

En la primera lectura de hoy, Pablo nos anima a permanecer fieles en nuestras misiones como discípulos de Jesucristo. Él nos recuerda que: “Hay que pasar mucho para entrar en el Reino de Dios.” En otras palabras, nuestro sufrimiento como cristianos es el paso hacia nuestra la victoria. Si no perdemos nuestra fe en tiempos de las persecuciones y las dificultades seremos victoriosos. Por lo tanto, amor por la palabra y para los demás deben sostenernos como marchamos hacia el Reino de Dios.

A través de la visión de Juan en la segunda lectura de hoy, Dios nos da una idea de ese reino que Pablo habló en nuestra primera lectura. Es un lugar de renovación donde todo nuestro esplendor perdido sería restaurado. La nueva Jerusalén es la recompensa de todos los cristianos que son auténtico testigos de Cristo resucitado. Es la esperanza de todos los que sufren persecuciones por la causa de Cristo y la buena noticia. Es la esperanza de aquellos que mantienen su fe en Cristo.

Es un lugar de consuelo donde, Cristo resucitado: “Enjugará todas lágrimas de sus ojos; habrá no más muerte y no más luto o tristeza.” A través de esta visión, estamos una vez más animados y asegurados que Dios mismo tiene un lugar para nosotros en su reino. Es su deseo que un día, nosotros también estaremos con Él en su reino eterno, donde Él prometió a hacer todas las cosas nuevas para nosotros. Sin embargo, antes, debemos soportar el sufrimiento de este mundo.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Cristo nos da un mandamiento nuevo que nos ayude a superar este mundo y marchar hacia la nueva Jerusalén. Él dice: “Yo, les doy un mandamiento nuevo, amen unos a otros; se deben amar los unos a los otros.” A través de este mandamiento, Cristo nos recuerda que la única manera que podemos superar las tribulaciones y persecuciones de este mundo es por permanecer unidos en el amor.

En tiempos de pruebas y persecuciones, el amor es la mayor virtud que sostiene toda comunidad cristiana. La primera comunidad cristiana entendió esto muy bien. Obedeció la orden de Cristo y fue exitoso en sus misiones. Por eso, sus admiradores comentaron: “Mire cómo aman uno al otro” (Tertuliano, apología: 39.7, AD 3).

Cualquier comunidad cristiana o familia que está unida en el amor nunca perderá su foco o fe en Dios. Este es el amor que Pablo se describe en su primera carta a los corintios (1 Co 13). Este amor no explota el otro, se aguanta y perdona, se empatiza y simpatiza con el otro. Este amor puede ser ciego, pero sigue siendo muy prudente, sensato, razonable y piadoso.

Finalmente, el amor que Cristo habla aquí es una marca de identificación. Él dice: “Por este amor, todos los conocerán que son mis discípulos.” En otras palabras, es lo que nos define como verdaderos discípulos de Cristo. Solamente, los que aman sinceramente pueden entrar en la nueva Jerusalén que Cristo resucitado prometió a su pueblo. Este amor es una marca de la novedad de vida que Cristo trae a todo su pueblo esta temporada de Pascua.

Christ Our Good Shepherd Never Fails

On this fourth Sunday of Easter, we celebrate the feast of Christ, our good shepherd who willingly laid down his life for his flock. We celebrate our shepherd because he loves and cares for us in all circumstances. He is willing to lead all who follow and obey him to the spring of eternal life.

Today’s first reading narrates how the apostles continued to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Today, one significant point is that they have moved a step further by bringing the good news to the gentiles who accepted it with joyful hearts. This shows that Christ came for the salvation of all his flock. As the good shepherd of all nations, He offers us salvation and protection through the good news. This is because it is his wish that all be saved.

Although he came to the Jews first, it was also his plan to save all nations. Unfortunately, due to ignorance, pride, and stubbornness, the Jews rejected him. However, this became a blessing for the gentiles who are now God’s elect. Like the Jews of Christ’s time, is there any way we reject the good news today? “Any form of stubbornness or resistance against the good news we hear every day is a sign of rejecting Christ as the Jews did. Also, one could reject Christ through lack of faith or even by not recognizing him in others.

In our second reading, through the vision of John, God assures us that Christ, our Good Shepherd is willing to welcome and save all his children. Hence, John tells us: “I saw a huge number, impossible to count, of people from every nation, race, tribe, and language; they were standing in front of the throne and front of the Lamb.”

Through his son Jesus Christ, God is ready to lead us to the spring of eternal salvation. His mercy, love, and salvation do not discriminate, and his kingdom is open to all his flock. This is especially to all who humbly and cheerfully embrace him. God’s salvation is like a free-flowing spring. However, only those who are faithful to him and have cleansed themselves in the blood of the lamb could draw life from this spring of life.

Today’s gospel is precise. However, it bears a compelling message for all of us who, according to the psalmist, “ Are the sheep of God’s flock.” Naturally, we know that rights go with duties. So, this reading notifies us of our commitment as Christ’s flock: “The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice, and they follow me.” On the other hand, it also specifies the responsibility of Christ, the good shepherd, towards us: “I give them eternal life, they will not be lost under my protection, and no one will ever steal them from me.” Hence, if we heed the voice of Christ, we are assured of his love, care, and protection. Christ, our good shepherd never fails.

So, as the sheep of God’s flock, let us heed the daily call of Christ, our good shepherd who says: “Behold I stand at the door of your heart and knock.  If you open the door, I will come in” (Rev 3:20). Yes, Jesus, the good shepherd of all nations, stands there patiently knocking. He wants to lead us to the stream of eternal life. So, let us not walk away from Him. The psalmist advises us thus: “Oh that today you will listen to his voice, harden not your hearts” (Ps 95:8). May the Almighty God grant us the wisdom and grace to continue to respond obediently to Christ, our Good Shepherd.

En este cuarto domingo de Pascua, celebramos la fiesta de Cristo, nuestro Buen Pastor que voluntariamente dio su vida por sus ovejas. Celebramos nuestro pastor porque Él nos ama y se interesa por nosotros en todas las circunstancias. Él está dispuesto a guiar a todos los que lo siguen y obedecen al manantial de la vida eterna.

La primera lectura de hoy narra los acontecimientos de cómo los Apóstoles siguen difundiendo la Buena Nueva de Jesucristo. Un punto importante observar es que hoy han logrado algo más, han traído la buena nueva a los gentiles que la aceptaron con alegría. Esto demuestra que Cristo vino para la salvación de todo. Como el Buen Pastor de todas las naciones, nos ofrece la salvación y protección a través de la buena nueva. Esto es porque, es su deseo de que todos sean salvos.

Aunque llegó a los judíos en primero, también era su plan salvar a todas las naciones. Por desgracia, debido la ignorancia, el orgullo, y la soberbia los judíos lo rechazaron. Sin embargo, esto se convirtió a una bendición para los gentiles que ahora son los elegidos de Dios. Como los judíos en el tiempo de Cristo debemos preguntarnos: ¿De alguna manera estamos rechazando la buena Nueva? Toda obstinación, o resistencia contra la buena nueva que vemos todos los días son signos de rechazo de Cristo como los judíos hicieron. Además, uno podría rechazar a Cristo, el buen pastor, a través de la falta de fe, o por no reconocerle en los demás.

En nuestra segunda lectura, a través de la visión de Juan, Dios nos asegura que Cristo, nuestro buen pastor está dispuesto a acoger y proteger todos sus hijos. Por lo tanto, Juan nos dice: “Yo vi una cantidad enorme, imposible de contar, de gente de toda nación, raza, tribu y lengua; estaban de pie delante del trono y delante del Cordero.”

A través de su Hijo Jesucristo, Dios está listo para llevarnos al manantial de la salvación eterna. Su misericordia, amor y salvación no discriminan, y su reino está abierto para los fieles que vencieron. La salvación de Dios es como un manantial que fluye libremente. Sin embargo, sólo aquellos que son fieles a Él y han limpiarse en la sangre del cordero podrían beber agua del manantial de la vida.

Hoy el evangelio es muy preciso. Sin embargo, lleva un mensaje muy poderoso para todos nosotros, que de acuerdo con el salmista: “Somos las ovejas del rebaño de Dios.” Por supuesto, sabemos que los derechos van con los deberes. Así, esta lectura nos avisa de nuestro deber como las ovejas de Cristo: “Las ovejas que pertenecen a mí escuchan mi voz y me siguen.”

Por otro lado, se especifica la responsabilidad de Cristo, el buen pastor hacia nosotros: “Yo les doy vida eterna, no se perderán bajo mi protección, y nadie jamás las robará de mí.” Por lo tanto, si obedecemos a la voz y al mandato de Cristo, estaremos seguros de su amor, cariño y protección. Cristo, nuestro buen pastor, nunca nos defraudará.

Así, como las ovejas de Cristo, escuchemos la llamada diaria de Jesucristo, el buen pastor, que dice: “He aquí que estoy a la puerta de tu corazón y llamo. Si abre la puerta, yo entraré” (Ap 3: 20). Sí, Jesús, el buen pastor de todas las naciones está allí pacientemente a nuestra puerta. Él quiere guiarnos a la vida eterna. Por lo tanto, no hay que andar lejos de Él. El salmista nos aconsejó así: “Oh, que hoy escuchamos su voz, no endurezcan sus corazones” (Sal 95:8). Que el Dios Todopoderoso nos conceda la sabiduría y la gracia para seguir respondiendo obedientemente a Cristo, nuestro buen pastor.

To the Risen Christ be all Power, Honor, And Glory

On this third Sunday of Easter, we proclaim that the risen Christ is the Lord. Today, through the celebration of the Eucharist, we affirm that He is the sacrificed Lamb. Hence, He is worthy to be given all power, honor, and glory. Both the first and the second readings of today bear great testimonies to the awesomeness of Christ.

In the first reading, led by Peter, the apostles continued to bear testimony to the risen Christ. Not even the Jews who they were previously afraid of could stop them. Fear now belongs to the past. So, Peter boldly said to the High Priest: “We are witnesses to all this, we and the Holy Spirit.” Despite all the humiliations and threats to their lives, Peter insisted: “Obedience to God comes first before obedience to men.” They are now confident that they will overcome death as Christ did. Their resoluteness reminds us that obedience to God manifests itself in faithfulness to our vocations and our witness for Christ.

In today’s gospel, Jesus appeared to his apostles for the third time. This time it was in the place of their “fishing business.” What frustrated and embarrassed men they were! Despite their fishing experience and skills, they could not catch any fish. This is because they abandoned their actual business and mission. They acted contrary to Christ’s mission statement for them: “From today you will no longer catch fishes, I will make you fishers of men” (Mt 4, 9).  They were supposed to be taking care of the Lord’s business and not theirs.

Also, today Christ asked Peter thrice: “Simon son of John, do you love me? Feed my lambs. Look after my sheep.” Christ needed to be assured of Peter’s commitment to lead his flock. This also showed the magnitude of the mission that Christ was to entrust to Peter. It was a way of reminding us that: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Hence, Christ reminds us that our vocation is essential. He also reminds us that we must be ready to accept every kind of humiliation for the good news as his disciples.

There are many other lessons to learn today. At times, we abandon our vocations for other “more interesting things or places.” Unfortunately, instead of progressing, we become frustrated like Peter and his companions. So, we fail most times because we are in the wrong place or doing the right thing at the wrong time.

Whenever we abandon the will of God and our vocation, we may labor in vain “all night long.” Also, when we depend solely on our human instinct or senses rather than on the spirit of God, success might elude us. So, we must not always forget these words of Christ, “Apart or separated from me, you can do nothing.” (Jn 15:5)

Finally, as Christ revealed himself to his disciples through the sacrifice of bread and wine, every day, He continues to show Himself to us through the Holy Eucharist and ordinary things of life. Therefore, at Mass, simple things like bread and wine help us to discover the presence of the Lord among us. This is, despite our infidelity and weakness. Through the Eucharist, Christ strengthens our faith. He also reminds us of our mission and who we ought to be. May all power, honor, glory, and praise be to the Risen Christ forever and forever. Amen.

A Cristo resucitado, sea todo honor, gloria y poder

En este tercer domingo de Pascua, proclamamos que el Cristo resucitado es el Señor. Hoy, a través de la celebración de la Eucaristía, afirmamos que Él es el Cordero que fue inmolado. Por lo tanto, Él es digno de recibir todo poder, honor y gloria. Tanto la primera, como la segunda lectura de hoy dan grandes testimonios de la grandeza de Cristo.

En la primera lectura, dirigida por Pedro, los apóstoles continuaron dando testimonio a Cristo resucitado. Ni siquiera los judíos a quienes ellos tenían previamente miedo podrían detenerlos. El temor ahora pertenece al pasado. Por lo tanto, Pedro audazmente dice al sumo sacerdote: “Nosotros somos testigos de todo esto, nosotros y el Espíritu Santo.”

A pesar de todas las humillaciones y las amenazas a su vida, Pedro insistió: “Primero hay que obedecer a Dios y luego a los hombres.” Ahora están seguros de que superarán la muerte como lo hizo Cristo. Sus firmezas nos recuerdan que la obediencia a Dios se manifiesta en la fidelidad a nuestra vocación y nuestro testimonio por Cristo.

En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús se apareció a sus apóstoles por la tercera vez. Esta vez fue en la orilla de mar mientras que pescaban ¡Qué frustrados y avergonzados estaban estos hombres! A pesar de su experiencia y habilidades, no podían coger ningún pescado. Esto es porque han abandonado su verdadera misión. Han actuado de manera contraria a la misión declarada de Cristo para ellos: “A partir de hoy ya no van a capturar peces, les haré pescadores de hombres” (Mt 4:9). Se suponían que estuvieran cuidando el negocio del Señor y no el de ellos.

También hoy, Cristo preguntó a Pedro tres veces: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que éstos? ¡Apacienta mis corderos… Pastorea mis ovejas…!” Cristo quiso estar seguro del compromiso de Pedro para dirigir a su rebaño. Esto también demuestra la magnitud de la misión que Cristo quiso encomendar a Pedro. Era una forma de recordarnos que: “A quien mucho se da, mucho se espera.” Por lo tanto, Cristo nos recuerda que nuestra vocación es muy importante. También nos recuerda que, como sus discípulos, debemos estar dispuestos a aceptar todo tipo de humillación para la buena nueva.

Hay muchas otras lecciones que aprender hoy. A veces, abandonamos nuestras vocaciones, por otras “cosas o lugares” que nos parecen “más interesante.” Por desgracia, en lugar de seguir adelante, debemos sentirnos frustrados como Pedro y sus compañeros. Por lo tanto, fallamos en la mayoría de las veces porque estamos en un lugar equivocado, o hacemos lo correcto en el momento equivocado.

Si nos abandonamos la voluntad de Dios y a nuestra vocación, podíamos trabajar en vano “toda la noche”. Asimismo, cuando dependemos exclusivamente de nuestro instinto humano más que en el espíritu de Dios, el éxito podía eludirnos. Por eso, siempre hay que recordar estas palabras de Cristo nuestro maestro: “¡Sin mí, no pueden hacer nada, o separados de mí no pueden ustedes hacer nada! (Jn 15:5).

Por fin, como Cristo se reveló a sí mismo a sus discípulos a través del sacrificio del pan y del vino, cada día sigue revelándose a nosotros a través de la Santa Eucaristía y a través cosas ordinarias de la vida. Esto es, a pesar de nuestra infidelidad y debilidad. Por lo tanto, en la Misa, cosas simples como el pan y el vino nos ayudan a descubrir la presencia del Señor entre nosotros. A través de la Eucaristía, Cristo fortalece nuestra fe. También nos recuerda nuestra misión y qué deberíamos ser. Que todo poder, honor, gloria y alabanza sea a Cristo resucitado por siempre. Amén.

The Risen Christ Brings Us Peace and Healing

Today is the second Sunday of Easter. The church and her faithful continue to worship the risen Christ, who is now alive forever. Christ is now present in our midst, bringing healing and Peace. Today is also Divine Mercy Sunday. So, we celebrate the mercy that God shows to the world by sending his Son to die for our salvation.

In 1997, a night before the burial of the afrobeat music legend, Fela Anikpuola Kuti, I witnessed a solidarity parade by his fans. What struck me was the song they sang. It was a popular Christian song that they converted in honor of the afrobeat music legend:” He is alive, Amen! Fela is alive forever. He is alive, amen! In a sense, they were right. At least he lives in the annals of history and their memories.

So, if the disciples of Fela (a mere man) strongly believed he lives on, why should we Christians not believe that Christ, the son of God, lives in glory? In today’s first reading, we see the power of the risen Christ at work in the life and actions of His disciples. Through this power, many believed, and Christ worked miracles. Jesus manifested his living and glorious presence through his apostles. Hence in our second reading, He assures us: I am the Living One. I was dead, and now I am to live forever and ever….”

In today’s gospel, Jesus visited his timid disciples. This gospel teaches us that our faith is distinct from mere sensible knowledge. This visit to his disciples was very significant, first to convince them that he was real. Second, to restore their faith and peace. Hence, he said to them: “Peace be with you.”

Third, it was to empower them spiritually. So, “He breathed on them saying: Receive the Holy Spirit.” Christ’s visit restored their courage and faith. However, it took time for Thomas to believe that Christ has risen.

Doubt and fear limit the greatest effort and power in the world. They make it difficult for one to believe the wonders that God has worked by resurrecting Christ. Therefore, we must expel the spirit of doubt and fear from our lives in order to experience the power of the resurrected Christ. Also, let us embrace the peace that Christ brings us this Easter.

The power of Christ’s resurrection brings healing and peace to our body and soul. It also restores us to life. This was the reason God resurrected Christ. Paul says of this power, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies” (Rom 8, 11).

Today, Jesus reassures us of His living presence with us in a more tangible, powerful, and glorified way. We, therefore, need to tap from His resurrection power to live as he lives. However, before we can experience this power and witness it as the apostles did, we must first cast away all doubts and fears. Hence, our situation must shift from doubting to the manifestation of a living and active faith in the risen Christ.

Finally, as we bear witness through our words and actions to the resurrection of Christ, let us give thanks to God because He considered us worthy of sharing in the power of the risen Lord. His love and mercy for us endure forever.

Cristo resucitado nos trae paz y sanación

Hoy es el segundo domingo de Pascua. La iglesia y sus fieles siguen adorando a Cristo resucitado, que ahora está vivo por los siglos de los siglos. Cristo está presente en medio de nosotros, trayendo sanación y paz.

En 1997, una noche antes del entierro del legenda de música de “Afro-beat”, conocido como Fela Anikpuola Kuti, yo vi un desfile de solidaridad por sus fanáticos. Lo que realmente me impactó fue la canción que cantaron. Era una canción cristiana popular que convirtieron en honor de la leyenda, “Afro-beat” : “¡Él está vivo, Amén! ¡Fela está vivo para siempre, él está vivo, Amén! Tenían razón en un sentido. Al menos vive en los archivos de la historia y en sus memorias.

Por lo tanto, si los discípulos de Fela (un mero hombre) creen firmemente que él está vivo, ¿por qué nosotros los cristianos no deberíamos creer que Cristo, el hijo de Dios vive en la gloria? En la primera lectura de hoy, vemos el poder de Cristo resucitado activo, en la vida y las acciones de sus discípulos. A través de este poder muchos creyeron, y milagros fueron realizados. Jesús manifestó su viva y gloriosa presencia a través de sus apóstoles. Por lo tanto, en nuestra segunda lectura, Él nos asegura: “Yo soy el que vive. Yo estaba muerto y ahora estoy vivo eternamente y para siempre.”

En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús visitó a sus tímidos discípulos. Este evangelio nos enseña que nuestra fe es de un orden distinto al de un mero conocimiento razonable. Esta visita a sus discípulos fue muy importante, en primer lugar, con el fin de convencerlos de que Él era real; en segundo lugar, con el fin de restaurar su fe y paz. Por lo tanto, les dijo: “La paz con ustedes”.

En tercer lugar, fue con el fin de potenciarlas espiritualmente. Así, “sopló sobre ellos diciendo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo. “La visita de Cristo restauró su valentía y fe. Sin embargo, Tomás llevó mucho tiempo para creer que Jesús ha resucitado.

La duda y el temor limitan el mayor esfuerzo y poder en el mundo. Hacen que sea difícil de creer las maravillas que Dios ha realizado por resucitar a Cristo. Por lo tanto, debemos expulsar al espíritu de la duda y el miedo de nuestras vidas para experimentar el poder de Cristo resucitado. Asimismo, abracemos la paz que Cristo nos trae en esta Pascua. 

El poder de la resurrección de Cristo trae sanación y paz a nuestro cuerpo y alma. También nos restaura a la vida. Esta fue la razón por la cual Él fue resucitado. Pablo dice de este poder: “Si el Espíritu de Aquel que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos vive en ustedes, el mismo que resucitó a Cristo de entre los muertos dará también vida a sus cuerpos mortales.” (Ro 8, 11).

Hoy, Jesús nos asegura de su presencia viva con nosotros de una forma más sustancial, potente y glorificada. Por lo tanto, tenemos que tomar ventaja de su poder de la resurrección para vivir como Él vive. Sin embargo, antes de experimentar este poder y comenzar a dar testimonio para Cristo como lo hicieron los apóstoles, debemos, en primer lugar, desechar todas las dudas y temores. Por lo tanto, nuestra situación debe cambiar de dudar a la manifestación de una fe viva y activa en el Cristo resucitado.

Por último, como damos testimonio a través de nuestras palabras y acciones a la resurrección de Cristo, demos gracias a Dios porque Él nos consideró dignos de compartir en el poder del Señor resucitado. Su amor y misericordia para nosotros perdura para siempre.
