Preparation In The Hope Of Receiving Christ

Today is the second Sunday of Advent. As a family of God’s people, we continue to move in the hope of receiving the fulfillment of God’s promise through our ancestors in faith. Hence, this Sunday, the church reminds us that while we are sustained by the great hope of the Lord’s coming, we have to heed the voice of the one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his path straight.” One thing is common to the readings of this Sunday.  They are all anchored on the prophecy of Isaiah about the Messiah.

In the first reading, Isaiah prophesied of the Lord’s coming in unequivocal terms. He equally described the qualities and marks of this promised king. First, he shall be filled with the spirit of God. He shall be a man of integrity, judge with equity and righteousness, and respect his people.

What a great hope the prophet brings us this season! Isaiah reminds us that the future is bright in Christ, our Messiah. He promises that he shall be different from other kings and that his reign shall bring us freedom from evil and oppression. It shall bring us peace with God and with one another. It shall strengthen our unity despite our diversities.

The prophet writes: “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain.” Indeed, if we welcome Christ sincerely, this will not sound utopian as many think it does. Our world would be a place where we do not have to live in fear of one another and where the strong will no longer oppress the weak.

In the second reading, Paul continues with the same message of hope for all nations. He reminds us: “Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope.” It is this same hope that sustains us this season. It will keep us united in faith, prayer, and love until what is written in the scriptures is fulfilled at the end of this season. Hence, following the scriptures, Paul exalts us to rejoice and praise God for what he is about to do. He concludes with the same message from Isaiah: “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the nations; in him, the nations shall hope.”

In today’s gospel, the appearance of John the Baptist is also a message of hope that the coming of the Messiah is near. However, it brings an important message to us: “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is near!” Also, he employed the prophecy of Isaiah to exalts us to: “prepare the way of the Lord and make his path straight!”

The message of John this Sunday underscores the importance of this season. It is a time not just for material preparation. Instead, it is a time of retreat and deep reflection on the mystery God is about to reveal to the world. It is a time of cleaning up and leveling the rough edges of our lives with the hope of receiving our Lord in a beautiful state of mind and body. It suffices to remind us here that John’s message is another way of telling us that: “Without holiness, no one will see the Lord” (Heb 12:14).

Repentance, reconciliation, and holiness of the heart are the prerequisites for justifying our hope at the end of this season. Therefore, let us rid ourselves of everything hindering us from receiving Christ this season. In light of this, the church encourages us to take advantage of the sacrament of reconciliation to prepare ourselves to receive our Lord and King.

Hoy es el segundo domingo de Adviento. Como una familia del pueblo de Dios, seguimos en la esperanza de recibir el cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios a través de nuestros antepasados en la fe. Por lo tanto, este domingo la Iglesia nos recuerda que mientras estamos sostenidos por la gran esperanza de la venida del Señor, tenemos que prestar atención a la voz de uno clamando en el desierto: “Preparen el camino del Señor, enderezad su camino.” Algo común a todas las lecturas de este domingo es que ellas están ancladas en la profecía de Isaías sobre el Mesías.

En la primera lectura, Isaías profetizó sobre la venida del Señor en términos inequívocos. Igualmente, se describieron claramente las cualidades y marcas de este rey prometido. En primer lugar, Él se llenará del espíritu de Dios. Será un hombre de integridad. Él juzgará con equidad y justicia. No sólo tiene el temor de Dios, sino respetará a su pueblo.

¡Qué gran esperanza el profeta nos trae esta temporada! Isaías nos recuerda que el futuro es brillante en Cristo el Mesías. Él promete que será diferente de otros reyes, y que su reinado nos traerá libertad de la maldad y la opresión. Nos traerá la paz con Dios y de uno con el otro. Debe fortalecer nuestra unidad a pesar de nuestra diversidad.

El Profeta escribe: “el lobo vivirá con el cordero, el leopardo se echará con el cabrito, el becerro y el León andarán juntos y un niño los pastoreará. No dañará o destruirá en todo mi Santo Monte…” De hecho, si acogemos a Cristo sinceramente, esto no sonará utópico como muchos piensan que lo hace. Nuestro mundo sería un lugar donde no tengamos que vivir en el miedo de uno al otro, y donde los fuertes ya no oprimirán a los débiles

En la segunda lectura, Pablo continúa con el mismo mensaje de esperanza para todas las naciones. Él nos recuerda que: “todo lo que fue escrito en el pasado fue escrito para nuestra instrucción, para que por la firmeza y por la consolación de las escrituras, tengamos esperanza.” Es esta misma esperanza la que nos sostiene esta temporada. Se nos mantendrá unidos en la fe, la oración y el amor hasta lo que está escrito en la Sagrada Escritura se cumpla al final de esta temporada. Por lo tanto, a través de lo que se ha escrito en las escrituras, Pablo nos exalta para alabar a Dios por lo que él está a punto de hacer. Se concluye con el mismo mensaje de Isaías: “la raíz de Jesé vendrá, quien se levanta a regir las naciones; en él las naciones serán la esperanza”.

En el Evangelio de hoy, la aparición de Juan el Bautista es también un mensaje de esperanza de que la venida del Mesías está cerca. Sin embargo, se trae un mensaje bien importante para nosotros: “¡Arrepiéntanse porque el Reino de los cielos está cerca!” Además, empleó la profecía de Isaías para exaltar: “¡Preparen el camino del Señor y hagan su camino recto!”

El mensaje de Juan este domingo subraya la importancia de esta temporada. Es un tiempo no sólo para la preparación material. Por el contrario, es un tiempo de retiro, un momento de profunda reflexión sobre el misterio que Dios está a punto de revelar al mundo. Es un tiempo de limpiarse y nivelar los bordes ásperos de nuestras vidas con la esperanza de recibir a nuestro Señor en un maravilloso estado del cuerpo y mente. Basta recordar aquí que el mensaje de Juan es otra manera de decirnos que: “Sin santidad nadie verá al Señor” (He 12:14).

El arrepentimiento, reconciliación y santidad de corazón son los requisitos previos para justificar nuestra esperanza al final de esta temporada. Por lo tanto, debemos deshacernos de todo aquello que nos impida recibir a Cristo en esta temporada. En vista de esto, la iglesia nos alienta a aprovechar el sacramento de la reconciliación para prepararnos para recibir a nuestro Señor y Rey.
