Courage, son, your sins are forgiven

On this Thursday of the 13^th week of ordinary time, Matthew presents us the seventh of the ten miracles of Christ after his sermon on the mount.

Today’s miracle is unique. Although the idea is popular in Jewish tradition, for the first time, Christ traced the cause of a physical sickness to sin.

In the field of medicine, the complete cure of any sickness is only possible through a proper diagnosis of its main cause. Hence, a physician who remains at the level of mere guessing, may never be successful in curing the sickness.

Again, the case of the Corona Virus that is still doing us a lot of harm right now proves this to be very true. Thanks to all the professionals making serious efforts to find a vaccine, or a cure for it.

However, until we have a complete idea of what we are really dealing with through accurate diagnosis, the right vaccine, and complete cure for this disease will continue to elude us.

In today’s gospel, the Jews thought they knew what was the problem and possible solution of the paralytic man that was brought to Christ. Unfortunately, they were wrong, because they could not see beyond the physical. Also, the never thought that anyone could heal him.

However, being God, Christ accurately diagnosed the cause of the man’s sickness. He knew that the man’s physical paralysis was only a symptom of the actual sickness – SIN.

Of course, Christ did not mean that all sicknesses are caused by sin (Jn 9:3). However, in this particular case, his simple prescription was forgiveness: “Your sins are forgiven.”

Indeed, his authority was questioned, but the result proved his diagnosis right. Christ knew that without, healing the man spiritually, by first forgiving his sins, he will remain sick, even after curing his physical paralysis.

So, today’s gospel calls us to a deep and sincere reflection on our situation. Only the paralytic man, and his God knew what held him down for so long. Those who brought him to Christ never knew and, were surprised to know it.

It is possible that there is a hidden “element” in our life. So, the solution to our problems could be very simple, while we continue wasting our precious time and resource searching for it elsewhere. 

If we sincerely come to Christ, we shall equally hear him say to us: “Courage, your sins are forgiven. Rise, pick up your stretcher and go home.”.”

En este jueves de la 13^ra semana de tiempo ordinario, Mateo nos presenta el séptimo de los diez milagros de Cristo después de su sermón en el monte.

El milagro de hoy es único. Aunque la idea es popular en la tradición judía, por primera vez, Cristo trazó la causa de una enfermedad física al pecado.

En el campo de la medicina, la cura completa de cualquier enfermedad es sólo posible a través de un diagnóstico adecuado de su causa principal. Un médico que permanece al nivel de meras conjeturas, puede nunca tener éxito.

Una vez más, el caso del COVID -19 que todavía nos está haciendo mucho daño ahora mismo, demuestra que esto es muy cierto. Gracias a todos los profesionales que están haciendo muchos esfuerzos serios para encontrar una vacuna, o una cura para ella.

Sin embargo, hasta que tengamos una idea completa de lo que realmente nos enfrenta a través de un diagnóstico preciso, la vacuna correcta, y la cura completa para esta enfermedad seguirán eludiéndonos.

En el evangelio de hoy, los judíos pensaban que sabían cuál era el problema del hombre paralítico que fue traído a Cristo. Desafortunadamente, estaban equivocados, porque no podían ver más allá de lo físico.

Sin embargo, siendo Dios, Cristo diagnosticó con precisión la causa de la enfermedad del hombre. Sabía que la parálisis física del hombre era solo un síntoma de la enfermedad real: EL PECADO.

Por supuesto, Cristo no quiso decir que todas las enfermedades son causadas por el pecado (Jn 9:3). Sin embargo, en este caso particular, su simple prescripción era, el perdón: “Tus pecados son perdonados.”

De hecho, su autoridad fue cuestionada, pero, el resultado demostró que su diagnóstico fue correcto. Cristo sabía que, sin primero, sanar al hombre espiritualmente perdonando sus pecados, permanecerá enfermo, incluso después de curar su parálisis física.

Así que, el evangelio de hoy nos llama a una profunda y sincera reflexión sobre nuestra situación. Sólo el hombre paralítico, y su Dios sabían lo que lo le dominó por mucho tiempo. Otros se sorprendieron al saberlo.

Es posible que haya un “elemento” oculto en nuestra vida. Por lo tanto, la solución a nuestros problemas podría ser muy simple, mientras que seguimos perdiendo nuestro precioso tiempo y recursos buscándola en otro lugar.

Si venimos sinceramente a Cristo, también lo escucharemos decirnos: ” Ten confianza, hijo. ¡Se te perdonan tus pecados! Toma tu camilla y vete a tu casa.”

Today, Wednesday of the 13^th week of ordinary time, Matthew presents us the sixth miracle of Christ after his sermon on the mount.

These miracles are demonstrations of the authority and power of Christ over both, physical and spiritual forces. Yesterday, he silenced the deadly storm. Today, he silenced the evil spirit. This same Christ, continues his redemptive work among us today.

Reflecting on today’s miracle, I imagined what would have happened, were Christ to do what he did today to the flock of cattle of a certain Fulani herdsman in Nigeria.

That is, where it appears today that, the life of a single cow is more important than the life of the entire inhabitants of a community.

I am sure that, the Fulani herdsman will pull the trigger of his AK-47, sack the entire community, without any government intervention to save the citizens.

Capitalism is a fine economic system. However, one of its disadvantages is that when it is taken to the extreme, it becomes a very dangerous tool. Those who are over intoxicated by it, value economy, and business more than any human life.

The COVID – 19 pandemic that has brought our world to its knees right now, has revealed that this could be true of capitalism. While people are still dying in hundreds, some governments and individuals are more interested in their economy, and businesses, than they are in the lives of their citizens.

Hence, today’s gospel reminds us of what must be our priority, whenever any human life is threatened by any form of danger; sickness, poverty, human or natural disasters. It is a wake call to all of us true Christians, to promote and embrace the fundamental option for life.

The question of the justification of Jesus’s destruction of someone’s business in order to save a mad man, is a long debate. However, his action is in line with his mission statement: “To free the captives, and the oppressed” (Is 61:1; Lk 4:18).

So, today Christ reminds us of the great priority that he places on our life and salvation, more than on any material possession or economy. He says to us: “Do not be afraid! You are worth more than a herd of many swine!’” (Mt 10:31).

¡Vales más que numerosa piara de cerdos!

Hoy, miércoles de la semana 13^ra Semana del tiempo ordinario, Mateo nos presenta el sexto milagro de Cristo después de su sermón en el monte.

Estos milagros son demostraciones de la autoridad y poder de Cristo sobre tanto las fuerzas físicas y espirituales. Ayer, Cristo silenció una tormenta peligrosa. Hoy, silenció el espíritu maligno. El mismo Cristo, continúa su obra redentora entre nosotros.

Reflexionando sobre el milagro de hoy, imaginé lo que habría sucedido si Cristo hiciera lo que hizo hoy al rebano de vaca de un cierto pastor Fulani en Nigeria.

Es decir, donde parece hoy que, la vida de una sola vaca es más importante que la vida de todos los habitantes de una comunidad.

Estoy seguro de que, el pastor Fulani tirará del gatillo de su AK-47, saqueará a toda la comunidad, sin ninguna intervención gubernamental para salvar a los ciudadanos.

El capitalismo es un buen sistema económico. Sin embargo, una de sus desventajas es que, cuando se lleva al extremo, se convierte en una herramienta muy peligrosa. Aquellos que están sobre intoxicados con ello, valoran la economía, y negocio más que cualquier vida humana.

La pandemia de COVID – 19 que ha puesto a nuestro mundo de rodillas en este momento, ha revelado que esto podría ser cierto de capitalismo. Mientras la gente sigue muriendo en cientos, algunos gobiernos e individuos están más interesados en su economía y empresas que, en la vida de sus ciudadanos.

Por lo tanto, el evangelio de hoy nos recuerda lo que debe ser nuestra prioridad, cuando cualquiera vida humana está amenazada por cualquier forma de peligro; enfermedad, pobreza, desastres humanos o naturales. Es una llamada despertador, a todos nosotros, verdaderos cristianos, para promover y abrazar la opción fundamental para la vida.

La cuestión de la justificación de la destrucción del negocio de alguien por Jesus, para salvar a un hombre poseído, es un largo debate. Sin embargo, su acción está en línea con la declaración de su misión: “Liberar a los cautivos y oprimidos” (Is 61:1; Lc 4:18).

Así que, hoy Cristo nos recuerda la gran prioridad que él da a nuestra vida y salvación, más que a cualquier posesión material o economía. Nos dice: “¡No tengas miedo! ¡Vales más que la numerosa piara de cerdos!’” (Mt 10:31).
