Today the Church celebrates Good Friday. It is the Friday within Holy Week. As I reflected on today’s celebration, I remembered a certain man. If one encounters this man in the morning and greets him, “good morning, sir!” Depending on his mood that morning, the most probable and surprising response one might get is: “What is good about the morning?” 

Like this man, most of us have asked: “What is good about Good Friday? What is good about a day when an innocent man was condemned to death? What is good about a Friday when God was crucified, and a day when hope was shattered? What is good about a day that we are expected to leave the Church in silence and sorrowful? These sentiments are natural.

The first answer to this question is that without this day, perhaps, there would have been no salvation for humanity. Had Christ not died, there would have been the no hope of salvation for us (Jn 16, 3; Rom 5, 8). So, it is good because it is a blessing in disguise.

On this day, Christ put the devil to shame and defeated the power of death. Hence, Paul asked: “Death, where is your sting, death where is your power?” (I Cor 15, 55). On this Good Friday: “Justification has been merited for us by the passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God. His blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men” (CCC 1992).

Second, today, the barriers preventing the saints from entering the holy of holies were torn apart (Mt 27:51). Thirdly, Good Friday is the climax of our journey of salvation. Some scholars consider this day more important than Easter Sunday. This is because they feel that without it, the Christ event of Easter Sunday would not have been possible.

The term Good Friday, and the activities surrounding are captures in the line in the Exultet of the Easter Vigil. It describes Adam’s fall as: “a happy fall.” So, just as the fall of Adam set God’s salvific plan in motion, the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday is the climax of that same salvific plan of God for suffering and enslaved humanity.

On this Good Friday, we must remember the sufferings of Christ. This would help us to understand the degree of love that our Saviour has for us. Christ himself reminds us that: “No one has much love than the one who gave his life for others.” This Good Friday is suitable to accompany Christ with our sentiments and shed tears of compassion before the cross.

However, we must not be stock just in the memorial and contemplation of a passed act. Today’s celebration must help us realize that Christ continues to suffer in many of our brothers. There are many Christ that suffer hunger, cold, solitude, and discrimination. Perhaps, we do not take note of them. So, our contemplation must help us see them.

Also, Christ is suffering and dying in each of us. The reason is that we are still attached to many things that imprison us. We continue to be slaves of our sins, habits, and weaknesses. So, we have not achieved the happiness we need. Therefore, this Good Friday, Christ calls us from the cross to a total change. He calls us to be generous with our lives as he was with his for the sake of our salvation.

Hoy la Iglesia celebra el Viernes Santo. Es el viernes en la semana Santa. Cuando reflexioné sobre la celebración de hoy, recordé a cierto hombre. Si uno se encuentra con este hombre en la mañana y le saluda “¡Buenos días, señor!” Dependiendo de su estado de ánimo esa mañana, la respuesta más probable y sorprendente que se puede obtener es: “¿Qué es lo bueno de esta mañana?”

Como este hombre, la mayoría de nosotros ha preguntado: “¿Qué es lo bueno sobre el Viernes Santo? ¿Qué es lo bueno de un día, en que un hombre inocente fue condenado a la muerte? Que es lo bueno sobre un viernes cuando, Dios fue crucificado, y en ese día las esperanzas fueron destrozadas. ¿Qué es lo bueno sobre un día que se espera que dejamos la iglesia en silencio y con tristeza? Estos sentimientos son naturales.

La primera respuesta a esta pregunta es que, sin este día, tal vez, no habría sido salvación para la humanidad. Si Cristo no hubiera muerto, no habría sido la esperanza de salvación para nosotros (Jn 16:3; Ro 5:8). Por lo tanto, es bueno porque, es una bendición disfrazada.

En este día, el diablo fue puesto a la vergüenza, y el poder de la muerte fue derrotado. Por lo tanto, Pablo preguntó: “Muerte, ¿Dónde está tu aguijón, muerte, ¿Dónde está tu poder?” (I Co 15:55). En este Viernes Santo: “La justificación ha sido merecida por nosotros por la pasión de Cristo que se ofreció en la Cruz como una víctima viva, santa y agradable a Dios. Su sangre se ha convertido en el instrumento de expiación por los pecados de todos los hombres “(CIC 1992).

La segunda es que, en este día, las barreras que impiden que todos los Santos de la iglesia entren en el lugar Santísimo fueron quebrantadas (Mt 27:51). La tercera es que, el Viernes Santo es el clímax de nuestro viaje de salvación. De hecho, algunos eruditos consideran este día más importante que el domingo de Pascua. Esto es porque, sienten que, sin este día, el acontecimiento de Cristo del domingo de Pascua no habría sido posible.

El término Viernes Santo, y las actividades que lo rodean podrían ser equiparados a la línea en el pregón (exultet) de la Vigilia Pascual. Describe la caída de Adán como, “una feliz caída”. Así que, como la caída de Adán puso en marcha el plan salvífico de Dios, el sacrificio de Cristo el Viernes Santo es el clímax del mismo plan salvífica de Dios para el sufrimiento y la esclavitud de la humanidad.

En este viernes, debemos recordar los sufrimientos de Cristo. Esto nos ayudaría a entender tanto de amor que nuestro Salvador nos tiene. Cristo mismo nos recuerda que: “Nadie tiene mucho amor que el que dio su vida por los demás”. En este Viernes Santo, es bueno acompañar a Cristo con nuestros sentimientos y derramar lágrimas de compasión ante la Cruz.

Sin embargo, no debemos ser abastecidos sólo en el Memorial y la contemplación de un acto aprobado. La celebración de hoy debe ayudarnos a tomar cuenta de que, Cristo sigue sufriendo en muchos de nuestros hermanos. Hay mucho Cristos que sufren hambre, frío, soledad y discriminación. Quizás, no los vemos ni tomar nota de ellos. Así que, nuestra contemplación debe ayudarnos a verlos.

Además, Cristo está sufriendo en cada uno de nosotros porque todavía estamos atados a muchas cosas que nos encarcelan. Seguimos siendo esclavos de nuestros pecados, hábitos, y debilidades. Por eso, no hemos logrado la felicidad que hemos aspirado. Por lo tanto, este Viernes Santo, Cristo nos llama desde su Cruz, a un cambio total, y a ser generosos con nuestra vida, como hizo con la suya por el bien de nuestra salvación.

El Jueves Santo conmemora la institución de la Santa Eucaristía, y el sacerdocio. Es un día de reconsagrarnos a la misión de Cristo, a través de la donación total de uno mismo, y la voluntad de servir a los demás.

Hoy, la Iglesia celebra el maravilloso don de Dios a ella y al mundo entero – la institución de la Santa Eucaristía. La Eucaristía es la comida que Dios generosamente ha hecho disponible para nutrirnos en nuestro viaje espiritual. Según el Papa Francisco, “La Eucaristía no es sólo una forma semanal de celebrar nuestra fe, sino que afecta radicalmente nuestra relación con los demás. Especialmente, con los más necesitados.”

La Eucaristía nos da la gracia de sentirnos perdonados y estar dispuestos a perdonar a los demás. Vamos a Misa, no porque somos dignos, o queremos parecer mejores que otros. Más bien, es porque sabemos que siempre estamos en necesidad de la misericordia de Dios, el amor y la gracia. Estos vienen a nosotros a través del cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo. La Eucaristía afecta la vida de nuestras comunidades cristianas. Así que, la iglesia recibe su misión e identidad de la Eucaristía.

La institución de la Santa Eucaristía por Cristo en el Jueves Santo, igualmente, marca la institución del sacerdocio ministerial. Por lo tanto, el sacerdocio es también un don de Dios a su iglesia. Esto significa que, es Dios quien llama libremente. La naturaleza mística del sacerdocio deriva primero, de las vidas de Melquisedec y, segundo de Cristo.

Esta naturaleza mística alcanza su plenitud en la cena del Señor el Jueves Santo, y en cada Misa. Es la consagración del pan y del vino, que se transforma en el cuerpo y la sangre reales de Cristo. Por lo tanto, el sacerdote es el defensor de la verdad. Está con los Ángeles para dar gloria a Dios. Hace que los sacrificios suban a Dios. Él comparte en el sacerdocio de Cristo, remodela la creación, y la restaura a la imagen de Dios.

Finalmente, en la base de todo esto está la humildad de Cristo. En el Evangelio de hoy, Cristo escogió lavar los pies de sus discípulos, en vez de ellos lavarle los pies a él. Los pies son la parte más humilde de nuestro cuerpo. Soportan el peso del cuerpo. Recogen el polvo de nuestro viaje. Por lo tanto, lavar y besar los pies es un gesto de gran humildad y amor que cualquier persona puede realizar.

Cristo también alimentó a sus discípulos. La celebración de hoy nos recuerda que Cristo se ofreció primero a sí mismo en la Eucaristía, antes de ofrecerse en la Cruz. Así que, el misterio del Jueves Santo se resume en la donación final y total de Dios a la humanidad.

En este día, la Eucaristía, el sacerdocio, el mandamiento del amor (hecho palpable en el lavado de los pies), y la Misa (la memoria eterna de la auto donación), brotaron del corazón de Cristo.

Hay una lección muy importante para nosotros en todos estos. Es esta, que la alegría de trabajar en el viñedo del Señor viene, sobre todo, de la auto donación de uno mismo, y de servir a otros. Sin embargo, esto es posible sólo a través de un corazón humildemente preparado para el servicio. Por lo tanto, en lugar de luchar para ser servidos todo el tiempo, vamos a emular a Cristo, al aspirar a servir a los demás.

Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. It is a day of rededicating ourselves to Christ’s mission through a total donation of oneself and the willingness to serve others.

Today, the Church celebrates God’s beautiful gift to her and the entire world – the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is the food that God has generously made available to nourish us on our spiritual journey. According to Pope Francis, “The Eucharist is not just a weekly way of celebrating our faith, but radically affects our relationship with others. Especially with those most in need.”

The Eucharist gives us the Grace to feel forgiven and be ready to forgive others. We go to Mass, not because we are worthy or want to appear better than others. Instead, it is because we know that we are always in need of God’s mercy, love, and Grace. These come to us through the body and blood of Christ. Eucharist affects the life of our Christian communities. So, the Church receives her mission and identity from the Eucharist.

The institution of the Holy Eucharist by Christ on Holy Thursday equally marks the ministerial priesthood’s institution. So, the priesthood is also God’s gift to his Church. This means that it is God who freely calls. The priesthood’s mystical nature derives from, first, the lives of Melchizedek and, second from Christ.

This mystical nature reaches its fullness at the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday and every Mass. That is the consecration of bread and wine, which transforms into Christ’s real body and blood. Therefore, the priest is the defender of the truth. He stands with the angels to give glory to God. He causes sacrifices to rise to God. He shares in Christ’s priesthood refashions creation and restores it in God’s image.

Finally, at the base of all these is the humility of Christ. In today’s Gospel, Christ chose to wash his disciples’ feet, instead of them washing his. The feet are the humblest part of our body. They endure the weight of the body and gather the dust of our journey. Hence, to wash and kiss the feet is a gesture of great humility and love that any person can realize. 

Christ also fed his disciples. Today’s celebration reminds us that Christ first offered himself in the Eucharist, before offering himself on the cross. So, the final and total donation of God to humanity summarizes the mystery of Holy Thursday.

Today, the Eucharist, the priesthood, the commandment of love (made palpable in the washing of the feet), and the Mass (the eternal memory of self-donation), sprouted from the heart of Christ.

There is a vital lesson for us in all of these. The joy of working in the vineyard of the Lord comes mostly from self-donation and serving others. However, this is possible only through a humble heart prepared for service. So, instead of struggling to be served all the time, let us emulate Christ by aspiring to serve others.

Divine love, keeps Christ going on his journey

Today is the fourth day of Holy Week. Yesterday the Gospel spoke of the betrayal of Judas and of the denial of Peter. Today, it speaks once again of the betrayal of Judas. In the description of the Passion of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, the failure of the disciples is strongly stressed.

In spite of having lived three years with Jesus, not one of them defended Jesus. Judas betrays Him, Peter denies Him, and the others flee. Matthew narrates everything not to discourage us, but to demonstrate that, the love of Jesus is stronger than the defeat and the failure of the disciples

This way of describing the attitude of Jesus was a help for the communities at the time of Matthew. Because of the frequent tribulations like the ones we are passing through, many were discouraged and abandoned the community.

Therefore, today’s gospel reminds us that, as human beings, we can break our relationship with Christ, but Christ never breaks it with us. His love is greater than our infidelity. He accepted his fate. He does not retaliate, no matter how shamefully he was treated. Divine love, keeps him going.

Today we may blame Judas who betrayed Christ for only thirty silver coins, or Peter who denied him because of the fear of the Jews. However, the question is, how many times have we betrayed him who loved us so much? How many times have we denied Christ through our words, actions and unbelief?

So, this Holy Week, we are invited in our prayer in the Passion to see how divinity hides itself. The Christ suffering, is God who still suffers the pain, injustices, greed and betrayal of his people today.

Amor divino, mantiene a Cristo en su camino

Hoy es el cuarto día de la Semana Santa. Ayer el Evangelio habló de la traición de Judas y de la negación de Pedro. Hoy habla una vez más de la traición de Judas. En la descripción de la Pasión de Jesús en el Evangelio de Mateo, el fracaso de los discípulos está fuertemente subrayado.

A pesar de haber vivido tres años con Jesús, ninguno de ellos defendió a Jesús. Judas lo traicionó, Pedro lo negó, y los demás huyeron. Mateo narra todo lo que sucedió, no para desalentarnos, sino para demostrar que, el amor de Jesús es más fuerte que la derrota y el fracaso de los discípulos.

Esta forma de describir la actitud de Jesús fue una ayuda para las comunidades en la época de Mateo. Debido a las frecuentes tribulaciones como las que estamos de pasando ahora, muchos fueron desalentados y abandonaron a la comunidad.

Por lo tanto, el evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que, como seres humanos, podemos romper nuestra relación con Cristo, pero Cristo nunca la rompe con nosotros. Su amor es mayor que nuestra infidelidad. Cristo aceptó su destino. Él no toma represalias, no importa cuán vergonzosamente fue tratado. Amor divino, mantiene a Cristo en su camino.

Hoy podemos culpar a Judas que traicionó a Cristo por sólo treinta monedas de plata, o a Pedro que lo negó por el temor de los judíos. Sin embargo, la pregunta es, ¿cuántas veces hemos traicionado a aquel que nos amó tanto? ¿Cuántas veces hemos negado a Cristo a través de nuestras palabras, acciones e incredulidad?

Así que, esta Semana Santa, estamos invitados en nuestra oración en la Pasión, a ver cómo se esconde la divinidad. El Cristo que sufre, es Dios que todavía sufre el dolor, las injusticias, la avaricia y la traición de nosotros su pueblo hoy.

One of you will betray me! Lord, who will it be?

Today is the third day of Holy Week. The journey of this season is gradually coming to its end. Things are becoming clearer to the disciples of Jesus.

Knowing that it will be his last meal with his disciples, Christ decides to make a great revelation to them about his suffering and death. Most important, he revealed the role one of them will play in the whole process: “Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”

This news was received with much surprise. Now every one is a suspect. Who will it be? They ask one another. But the culprit knows himself, what he has done and what he was going to do. Of course, Christ knew that it would be Judas Iscariot who was a thief, and jealous of him

The betrayal of Judas Iscariot will be immediate, and would initiate the great suffering and suffering of Christ. Yet, there is other betrayal that belongs to the future, that of Peter the head of the apostles. Of course, now he is full of zeal to deal with who ever will betray their master, but he will do the same thing. Though at another level.

So, the story of our salvation is full of ups and downs. It is marked by betrayals, persecutions, sufferings and abandonment. These marks are what makes this story unique and what it is.

However, the good news is that, these sufferings, betrayals, and abandonments will bear positive fruits. They prepare the ground for the good things to come in future, the salvation of humanity.

Have you been betrayed, abandoned by the ones you loved most? Do you feel lonely on your journey in life? Look up to Christ and make him your model in your difficult journey of life. He will help you to understand why. He did for you, and for all of us. If we endure like him, we shall see his salvation and glory.

This Holy Week, may we find the strength and courage to face these difficult moments in our own life.

¡Uno de ustedes me traicionará! Señor, ¿quién será?

Hoy es el tercer día de la Semana Santa. El viaje de esta temporada está llegando gradualmente a su fin. Las cosas ya se están volviendo más claras a los discípulos de Jesús.

Sabiendo que será su última cena con sus discípulos, Cristo decide hacerles una gran revelación acerca de su sufrimiento y muerte. Lo más importante, reveló el papel que uno de ellos desempeñará en todo el proceso: “Yo les aseguro, que uno de ustedes me va a entregar”.

Esta noticia fue recibida con mucha sorpresa. Ahora cada uno es un sospechoso. ¿Quién será? Se preguntaron el uno al otro. Pero, el culpable se conoce a sí mismo, lo que ha hecho, y lo que iba a hacer. Por supuesto, Cristo sabía que sería Judas Iscariote quien era un ladrón, y celoso de él.

La traición de Judas Iscariote será inmediata, e iniciará el gran sufrimiento jornada de Cristo. Sin embargo, hay otra traición que pertenece al futuro, la de Pedro, la cabeza de los apóstoles. Por supuesto, ahora está lleno de celo para luchar con quién traicionará a su maestro, pero hará lo mismo. Aunque en otro nivel.

Entonces, la historia de nuestra salvación está llena de altibajos. Está marcada por traiciones, persecuciones, sufrimientos y abandonos. Estas marcas son lo que hace que esta historia sea única, y lo que es.

Querido hermano, ¿Has sido traicionado, abandonado por los que más amabas? ¿Te sientes solo en tu viaje en la vida? Mira a Cristo, y hazlo tu modelo en tu camino difícil de vida. Te ayudará a entender por qué. Lo hizo por ti, y por todos nosotros. Si perseveramos como él, veremos su salvación y gloria.

Esta Semana Santa, que encontremos la fuerza y el ánimo para afrontar estos momentos difíciles en nuestra propia vida.

Christ continues his mission

The Church has started Holy Week. It is one of the most important weeks in the history of our salvation as God’s people. The persecution of Christ will only intensify this week.

In spite of this, Christ continues his mission. His visit to the house of Lazarus and his family was a visit of solidarity. As we saw last week, Christ shared their sorrow and “wept.” Today, he shares their joy.

He knows that the Jews were looking for him, and that they wanted him dead as soon as possible. However, he is no longer afraid because, he knows that soon, he will fulfill his Father’s will. He will freely hand himself over to them for one purpose, the salvation of the world.

Hence, the anointing of Jesus’s feet by Martha tells a lot about his future. Also, it shows the dept of love that Martha and her family had for Christ. They not only offered him the comfort of their home, they also offered him their cherished and most expensive treasure.

Martha’s action was an act of love, and an appreciation for what Christ represents for them. He is a Messiah, a valued friend, and of course, a king. The value of the perfume tells the whole story.

Martha and her family not only saw the present of Christ, but also his future. They saw his suffering, his death, his Resurrección. Most importantly, they recognized the presence of the king of eternal glory before them. So, Martha took advantage of the opportunity before her, and adored Christ, the King.

Many people like Judas could not see this. So, they only complained about wasting an expensive perfume. Of course, their argument seemed reasonable. However, it was not out of genuine intention for the poor, but out of pure jealousy and greedy. At times while we only see and worry about “the cost of something or a gesture,” Christ sees the love in them. That is the love with which they were given or made.

As we accompany Christ this week, let us ask God to keep us faithful so that, as we share in his suffering, we might also share in his glory.

Cristo continúa su misión

La Iglesia ha comenzado la Semana Santa. Es una de las semanas más importantes en la historia de nuestra salvación como pueblo de Dios. La persecución de Cristo sólo se intensificará esta semana.

A pesar de esto, Cristo continúa su misión. Su visita a la casa de Lázaro y su familia fue una visita solidaria. Como vimos en la semana pasada, Cristo compartió su dolor, y ¡lloró! Hoy, comparte su alegría.

Christo sabe que los judíos lo estaban buscando, y que lo querían muerto lo antes posible. Sin embargo, ya no tiene miedo porque, sabe que pronto, cumplirá la voluntad de su Padre. Se entregará libremente a ellos con un solo propósito, la salvación del mundo.

Por lo tanto, la unción de los pies de Jesús por Marta dice mucho sobre su futuro. También, muestra el profundo amor que Marta y su familia tenían por Cristo. No sólo le ofrecieron la comodidad de su hogar, sino que también le ofrecieron su preciado y más caro tesoro.

La acción de Marta fue un acto de amor, y una apreciación por lo que Cristo representa para ellos. Cristo es un Mesías, un amigo valioso, y por supuesto, un rey. El valor del perfume lo dice todo.

Marta y su familia no sólo vieron el presente de Cristo, sino que, también vieron su futuro. Vieron su sufrimiento, su muerte, su Resurrección. Lo más importante, reconocieron la presencia del rey de la gloria ante ellos. Así, Martha aprovechó la oportunidad ante ella, y adoraba a Cristo, el Rey.

Mucha gente como Judas, no podía ver esto. Por lo tanto, sólo se quejaron de gastar un perfume caro. Por supuesto, su argumento parecía razonable. Sin embargo, no fue por intención genuina para los pobres, sino por puro envidia y egoísmo. A veces, mientras solo vemos y nos preocupamos por “el costo de algo o un gesto”, Cristo ve el amor en ellos. Es decir, el amor con el que fueron dados o hechos.

Al acompañar a Cristo esta semana, pidamos a Dios que, nos mantenga fieles para que, al compartir su sufrimiento, también podamos compartir su gloria.
