The true Image of God

Gradually we are coming close to Holy Week, during which we commemorate the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ. Today, John continues to present to us, the conflict between Jesus and the religious authorities.

At the root of this conflict is the wrong image of God that religious authorities had. This is not only something which has taken place in the far past, or peculiar with religious authorities alone. Rather, it is also, a mirror which reflects what happens in our world today. This wrong image manifests itself in different systems, ideologies, beliefs, philosophies, even theologies.

Hence, the word of God and its true messengers always encounter rejections and threats whenever they try to correct this wrong image. This is what happed to Christ, His apostles. It continues to happen to all His true disciple, even in our time. Christ was accused of blasphemy because he claimed the he was God. So, for this reason, He must die.

They Judged him according to their human standard, but as God, He shall be acquitted by the heavenly court and standard. He shall be exalted and they will remain and die in their ignorance.

Of course, their effort to execute their sentence by stoning him to death failed this time because, it was not yet time for God to humanity to an end. When the time and day comes, he will hand over to them what is left of his humanity. But his divinity will remain untouchable and indestructible.

So, as we come close to Holy Week, all these rejections and threats must remind us of Christ’s ability to love us, even up to the point of his own death. They condemned Him because of their wrong image of God. However, Christ demonstrated that the best image is, to see God as pure love. The knowledge this pure love calls for wonder and gratitude on our own part.

La verdadera imagen de Dios

Gradualmente nos acercamos a la Semana Santa, durante la cual conmemoramos la Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección de Cristo. Hoy, Juan continúa presentándonos el conflicto entre Jesús y las autoridades religiosas.

En la raíz de este conflicto está la imagen equivocada de Dios que tenían las autoridades religiosas. Esto no es sólo algo que ocurrió en el pasado lejano, o peculiar sólo a las autoridades religiosas. Más bien, es un espejo que refleja lo que sucede en nuestro mundo de hoy. Esta imagen equivocada se manifiesta en diferentes sistemas, ideologías, creencias, filosofías, incluso teologías.

Así que, la palabra de Dios y sus verdaderos mensajeros siempre encuentran rechazos, y amenazas cada vez que tratan de corregir esta imagen equivocada. Esto sucedió a Cristo, y a sus apóstoles. Sigue sucediendo a todos sus verdaderos discípulos, incluso hoy en día. Cristo fue acusado de blasfemia porque afirmó que, era Dios. Por eso, debe morir.

Lo juzgaron según la ley humana, pero siendo Dios, será absuelto por la corte, y ley celestial. Cristo será exaltado, mientras que, permanecerán y morirán en su ignorancia y obstinación.

Por supuesto, su esfuerzo por ejecutar su sentencia de apedrear a Cristo fracasó esta vez, porque todavia no era hora para acabar con su humanidad. Cuando llega el día y la hora, Cristo les entregará su humanidad libremente. Sin embargo, su divinidad seguirá siendo intocable e indestructible.

Así que, a medida que nos acercamos a la Semana Santa, todos estos rechazos y amenazas deben recordarnos, la capacidad de Cristo para amarnos. Esto incluso, hasta el punto de su propia muerte.

Lo condenaron por su imagen equivocada de Dios. Sin embargo, Cristo demostró que la mejor imagen es, ver a Dios como amor puro. El conocimiento de este amor puro exige asombro y gratitud por nuestra parte.

The Divine Mystery of the Person of Christ.

Today’s Gospel presents us another dialogue between Jesus and the Jews. However, it is not easy to see the connections in this dialogue. So, only through the help of the Holy Spirit, and one’s attentive and prayerful observation, can one discover the invisible connections, and be able to penetrate into the divine mystery which surrounds the person of Jesus Christ.

Yesterday, Jesus spoke of His strong relationship with Abraham. Today, he continues the dialogue. But in this case, He speaks both about who he is, and about his relationship with the Father. He makes very big claims on his identity.

First, Jesus makes a solemn affirmation: “Whoever keeps My word will not see death!” This was a very big blow to most of his listeners. It was hard to comprehend. They had no doubt that Jesus was claiming a divine nature.

Again, they failed to see that, as the son of Mary he was born in Bethlehem in time. However, as God, He is outside time.  He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8). Indeed, His statement, “before Abraham came to be, I AM” confirms and explains it all. Yet, it was hard for his listeners to comprehend.

Today’s gospel highlights the difference between the way of Jesus, and the way of the authorities. The divine way of looking at things, is the deep meaning that Jesus brings to life. So, Jesus is saying to all of us today: “If you want to see God, here I am!”

So, let ask God, Our Father to open the eyes of our minds, that we may comprehend the mystery of the divinity that surrounds the person of Christ. Let us also ask Him, to help us see Him in his Words, and in one another.

El Misterio Divino de la Persona de Cristo

El Evangelio de hoy nos presenta otro diálogo entre Jesús y los judíos. Sin embargo, no es fácil ver las conexiones en este diálogo. Así que, sólo a través de la ayuda del Espíritu Santo, y de la observación atenta y orante, se puede descubrir las conexiones invisibles, y ser capaces de penetrar en el misterio divino que rodea a la persona de Jesucristo.

Ayer, Jesús habló de su fuerte relación con Abraham. Hoy, continúa el diálogo. Pero en este caso, habla tanto de quién es, como de su relación con el Padre. Hace grandes afirmaciones sobre su identidad.

Primero, Jesús hace una afirmación solemne: “¡El que es fiel a mis palabras no morirá para siempre!” Este fue un fuerte golpe para la mayoría de sus oyentes. Era difícil de comprender. No tenían ninguna duda de que Jesús estaba reclamando una naturaleza divina.

Una vez más, no pudieron ver que, como hijo de María, nació en Belén en el tiempo. Sin embargo, que, como Dios, él está fuera del tiempo. Él es el mismo ayer, hoy y para siempre (Heb 13:8). De hecho, su declaración que, “desde antes que naciera Abraham, Yo Soy”, lo confirma y lo explica todo. Sin embargo, era difícil para sus oyentes comprender.

Por tanto, el evangelio de hoy destaca la diferencia entre el camino de Jesús, y el camino de las autoridades. La manera divina de mirar las cosas, es el significado profundo que Jesús trae a la vida. Así que, Jesús está diciendo a todo nosotros hoy: “Si quieres ver a Dios, ¡aquí Estoy!”

Así que, pidamos a Dios, Nuestro Padre que abra los ojos de nuestra mente y corazón, para que comprendamos el misterio de la divinidad que rodea la persona de Cristo. Le pidamos también, que nos ayude a verlo en sus Palabras y en los demás.

Lord, I want to be free!

Today’s gospel is a continuation of the conversation Jesus had with the Jews in yesterday’s gospel. It treats the theme of the relationship of Jesus and Abraham. Today, Jesus places himself within the whole history of the People of God.

Jesus points out to the Jews that, even if they regard Abraham as their spiritual father, they do not have his spirit. They could not comprehend what Christ means that he had been sent by the Father. Hence, the gospel helps us to understand the difference that existed between Jesus and the Jews. Equally, it also highlights the fact that, we are all children of Abraham.

Also, today, Christ reminds us that liberty comes through fidelity to the word of God: “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

To be a disciple of Jesus is the same as opening oneself to God. So, the words of Jesus are God’s words. They communicate the truth, because they reveal things as they are in the eyes of God, and not in the eyes of men.

As we come towards the end of this Lenten season, and look forward to the Paschal feast, Christ our Saviour wants to lead us into truth, so that we may be free. So, if we truly desire freedom, we need to be ready to accept the truth.

Hence, our prayer today should be: Lord, I want to be free. Help me listen to your words which tries to reach into my heart and liberate me. Help me listen to those who tell me the truth about myself. Peace be with you all!

Señor, Yo quiero ser libre

El Evangelio de hoy es una continuación de la conversación que Jesús tuvo con los judíos en el evangelio de ayer. Trata el tema de la relación entre Jesús y Abraham. Hoy, Jesús se sitúa dentro de toda la historia del Pueblo de Dios.

Jesús señala a los judíos que, aunque consideren a Abraham como su padre espiritual, no tienen su espíritu. No podían comprender lo que Cristo significa que había sido enviado por el Padre. Por lo tanto, el Evangelio nos ayuda a entender la diferencia que existía entre Jesús y los judíos. Igualmente, destaca el hecho de que todos somos hijos de Abraham.

También, hoy, Cristo nos recuerda que la libertad viene por fidelidad a la palabra de Dios: Si se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán verdaderamente discípulos míos, conocerán la verdad y la verdad los hará libres”

Ser un discípulo de Jesús significa abrirse a Dios. Entonces, las palabras de Jesús son palabras de Dios. Comunican la verdad, porque revelan las cosas como están a los ojos de Dios, y no en los ojos de los hombres.

Al llegar hacia el final de este tiempo cuaresmal, y esperamos con ansias la fiesta pascual, Cristo nuestro Salvador quiere conducirnos a la verdad, para que seamos libres. Por lo tanto, si realmente deseamos la libertad, tenemos que estar listos para aceptar la verdad.

Por lo tanto, nuestra oración hoy debe ser: Señor, quiero ser libre. Ayúdame a escuchar tus palabras que tratan de llegar a mi corazón y liberarme. Ayúdame también a escuchar a aquellos que me dicen la verdad sobre mí mismo.
