Respondiendo a la llamada de Dios

En este segundo domingo del tiempo ordinario, oímos la voz de Dios más fuerte como siempre, invitándonos a ser sus discípulos. Hoy, la Iglesia, nos recuerda que la llamada de Dios es real y que, Dios nos conoce y llama personalmente por nuestros nombres. Por lo tanto, nos alienta a responder eficazmente a esta llamada con nuestro cuerpo, alma y espíritu.

Nuestra primera lectura del primer libro de Samuel relata el llamado dramático de Samuel. De hecho, nos recuerda a nuestra propia llamada. Muchas veces, me han preguntado, ¿cómo habla Dios a uno? ¿Cómo puedo responder al llamado de Dios? Estas son preguntas muy interesantes que reflejan nuestras confusiones como vemos en el joven Samuel de hoy.

Aunque vivimos en un mundo muy ruidoso, todavía podemos oír a Dios. Es que, si sólo podemos disciplinarnos contra el ruido espiritual y biológico. La vida está llena de la voz de Dios. Como un padre, él habla, y nos llama a su servicio todos los días. Como Samuel, debemos estar siempre listos para decir: “habla Señor, porque tu siervo te escucha.”

Sin embargo, el único problema es que la mayoría de las veces, estamos demasiado ocupados o siempre apurados, que apenas tenemos tiempo para escucharlo. Por lo tanto, necesitamos estar dispuestos en todo momento para escuchar a Dios. La pregunta es, ¿Cuándo fue la última vez que pasamos hasta diez minutos en silencio en su presencia? No podemos oírlo, si somos los que hablan en todo momento y siempre.

La segunda lectura de este domingo es parte de la “teología moral de Pablo”. Esto se debe a que toca un tema moral muy importante que casi ha profanado soluciones en nuestra sociedad moderna. De hecho, sigue desarrollando más tentáculos a medida que pasa el día. Esto es inmoralidad, que Pablo simplemente se limitó a la fornicación.

¿De qué relevancia es esto para responder a la llamada de Dios? Este vicio es un pecado contra nuestro cuerpo, así como contra el espíritu de Dios que vive en nosotros. Por lo tanto, Pablo nos recuerda: “Su cuerpo es el templo del Espíritu Santo, que está en ti desde que lo has recibido de Dios”. Este pecado ralentiza el crecimiento espiritual y moral de uno. Consecuentemente, reduce la capacidad de responder eficazmente al llamado de Dios.

A través de esto, Pablo llama nuestra atención sobre la relación entre moralidad y espiritualidad. Lo espiritual se afectó por lo físico. Además, Pablo nos recuerda que pertenecemos completamente a Dios. Preservarnos a nosotros mismos para Dios, es una manera muy importante de responder a su llamado. Es una manera de ofrecernos totalmente a Dios como, “un sacrificio vivo y puro” (Ro 12:1).

En este domingo, el evangelio nos presenta el inicio del ministerio de Jesús. Los testimonios sobre él siguen especialmente, de Juan el Bautista que cumplió su misión. Hoy, él cumplió su propia profecía: “yo no soy el que de venir…!” Seguramente, él no era el Mesías. Entonces, él dirige a todos los verdaderos discípulos a Cristo: “¡Este es el cordero de Dios!”

El Evangelio de hoy nos desafía a reflexionar sobre nuestra respuesta al llamado de Dios. Como él dijo a sus primeros discípulos, así que nos dice: “¡Ven a ver!” Andrés invitó a su hermano Pedro con las mismas palabras: “venga a ver al Mesías”. También, la mujer samaritana invitó a su pueblo con la misma palabra: “Ven a ver al Señor” (Jn 4, 29).

Estas son invitaciones para seguir a Cristo. Responder a esta invitación es un asunto cotidiano que requiere todo nuestro ser. Además, nos obliga a ayudar a otros a responder. Dios nos llama por nuestros nombres todos los días: “Ven, síganme; ven a ver.” Por lo tanto, como el salmista nuestra respuesta debe siempre: “aquí estoy Señor, he venido a hacer su voluntad.”

Today is the first Sunday of ordinary time, year B. It is also the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This Sunday is like a bridge between two great cities. Officially, it marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of the ordinary time of the year.

Through this feast, the Church reminds us that Jesus was baptized with water and the Holy Spirit to bring healing and salvation to all nations. Today’s celebration allows us to reflect both on the efficacy of Christ’s baptism as well as on ours.

In today’s first reading from Isaiah, God extends a universal invitation to all of us. It is a special invitation to come to Christ the living water. Christ is the living water in whose name we were baptized. Through his baptism, He has sanctified our water of baptism.

Today’s invitation is unique because it is open to all nations, especially those who are truly thirsty. It is for those who are genuinely open to the salvation that God offers through his son Jesus Christ. Hence, it is a call to accept God’s offer of salvation by believing in Jesus Christ, the living water.  

In our second reading, John calls our attention to the importance of believing in Jesus Christ. Most importantly, he highlighted three elements that bear witness to the sonship of Christ: water, blood, and spirit. Every day, we are tainted both inwardly and outwardly by sin. In light of this, the water of baptism, which Christ brings, continues to be efficacious in our lives.

Christ continues to regenerate us through the water of baptism, through his precious blood, and the power of the Holy Spirit. This water and blood include all that is necessary for our salvation—both flow from Christ.

Through this water that flowed from Christ’s side, our souls are washed and purified for eternal life in heaven.  While through his blood, we are justified, reconciled, and presented to God as righteous. Through his Spirit, we are made strong for the battle of life. Christ loved the church and gave himself for us, that he might sanctify and cleanse us with the washing of water in baptism (Eph 5:25-27).

The gospel highlights the core of our celebration today, the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Christ had to be baptized in order to make way for us, and in order to purify our water of baptism. As the first among his brothers (Rom 8, 29), he always takes the lead to show us the way. Hence, he came from heaven to earth to show us the way.

Therefore, the baptism of Christ is the stepping stone for our baptism. He healed the water. Thus, giving it the capacity to clean us from Original Sin. Therefore, today’s celebration reminds us of God’s saving help to us. It reminds us that what Adam and Eve destroyed through Original Sin was restored by Christ through the water of baptism.

At Christ’s baptism, the Spirit of the Father bore witness that he is indeed the son of the Father. This is also what happens to us, not only at baptism but daily. As we continue to walk with God by fulfilling our baptismal promises, the Holy Spirit, continues to testify: “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.”

Finally, today’s celebration allows us to reflect on our Baptism. So, let us renew those promises we made to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Today, let us recommit ourselves to Christ in whose name we were baptized. So, with joy, let us draw living water from Christ, the well of salvation (Is 2, 3).

Hoy es el primer domingo del tiempo ordinario, año B. Es también la fiesta del bautismo del Señor. Este domingo es como un puente entre dos grandes ciudades. Oficialmente, marca el final de la temporada de Navidad, así como el comienzo del tiempo ordinario del año.

A través de esta fiesta, la Iglesia nos recuerda que Jesús fue bautizado con agua y el Espíritu Santo para traer sanidad y salvación a todas las naciones. La celebración de hoy nos brinda la oportunidad de reflexionar tanto sobre la eficacia del bautismo de Cristo como la nuestra.

En la primera lectura de hoy de Isaías, Dios extiende una invitación universal a todos nosotros. Es una invitación especial para venir a Cristo el agua viva. Cristo, es el agua viva en cuyo nombre fuimos bautizados. A través de su propio bautismo, él ha santificado nuestra propia agua del bautismo.

La invitación de hoy es especial porque, está abierta a todas las naciones, especialmente, a aquellos que están verdaderamente sedientos. Es para aquellos que están verdaderamente abiertos a la salvación que Dios ofrece a través de su hijo Jesucristo. Por lo tanto, es un llamado a aceptar la oferta de salvación de Dios creyendo en Jesucristo, el agua viva.

En nuestra segunda lectura, Juan llama nuestra atención a la importancia de creer en Jesucristo. Lo más importante es que destacó tres elementos que testimonian la filiación de Cristo: el agua, la sangre y el espíritu. Todos los días, estamos contaminados tanto interiormente como exteriormente por el pecado. A la luz de esto, el agua del bautismo que Cristo trae sigue siendo eficaz en nuestras vidas.

Cristo sigue regenerándonos con el agua del bautismo, a través de su preciosa sangre y a través del poder del Espíritu Santo. Esta agua y sangre incluyen todo lo necesario para nuestra salvación. Ambos, fluyen de Cristo.

A través de su agua, nuestras almas son lavadas y purificadas para la vida eterna. A través de su sangre, estamos justificados, reconciliados y presentados a Dios como justos. A través de su espíritu, estamos hechos fuertes para la batalla de la vida. Cristo amó a la iglesia, y se entregó por nosotros, para santificar y limpiarnos con el agua del bautismo (Ef 5:25-27).

El evangelio pone de relieve el núcleo de nuestra celebración de hoy, el bautismo de Jesús por Juan el Bautista. Cristo tuvo que ser bautizado para abrir un camino para nosotros, y para purificar nuestra agua del bautismo. Como el primero entre sus hermanos (Rom 8, 29), siempre toma la iniciativa para mostrarnos el camino. Por lo tanto, vino del cielo a la tierra para mostrarnos y guiarnos por el camino.

El bautismo de Cristo es la base para nuestro propio bautismo. Él sanó el agua haciéndola capaz de limpiarnos del pecado original. La celebración de hoy nos recuerda la salvación que Dios nos ha concedido. Nos recuerda que lo que Adán y Eva destruyeron a través del pecado original, que Cristo lo restauró a través del agua del bautismo.

En el bautismo de Cristo, el espíritu del padre dio testimonio de que él es verdaderamente el hijo del padre. Esto es igualmente lo que sucede a nosotros, no sólo al bautismo, sino diario. Mientras seguimos caminando con Dios cumpliendo nuestras promesas bautismales, el Espíritu Santo sigue testificando: “este es mi hijo amado en quien tengo mis complacencias”.

Finalmente, la celebración de hoy nos brinda la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre nuestro bautismo. Así que, renovemos las promesas que hicimos a Dios en el nombre de Jesucristo. Hoy, volvamos a comprometernos con Cristo en cuyo nombre fuimos bautizados. “Con gozo, saquemos agua viva, de Cristo, el pozo de la salvación” (Is 2, 3).

Today is Epiphany of the Lord, which informs the choice of the theme of our reflection, Beloved, Arise, and Shine! There is no better season to ask one to arise and shine than during this glorious season of the Messiah’s birth and the New Year. This is the best time to call to mind once more the story of the rusty shield, which said to the sun: “Dazzle me!” While the sun responded: “Polish yourself, and I will dazzle you!” Therefore, this season we must rise and shine because: “In His light, we see the light” (Ps 36, 9).

The term Epiphany is of Greek origin, epiphaninen. It is a verb with the following synonyms or meanings: “to reveal,” “to manifest” or “to make known.” It celebrates the many ways through which Jesus has revealed himself to us. These include the events that bring to light his mission and divinity; the visitation of the Magi (Mt 2, 10-12); the baptism of Jesus (Mk 1, 9-11; and the miracle at Cana (Jn 2, 1-11). Objectively speaking, only good things are revealed while the bad ones are hidden to avoid shame. Even when the bad ones are revealed, it is done to expose evil. They are not revealed with pride or joy.

The first reading of today from the prophet Isaiah enjoins us to: “Arise and Shine out Jerusalem, for your light has come, the glory of the Lord is rising on you.”  This glory of the Lord is Christ himself, who has come to dwell amongst us. He is the source of all lights in the world. He is like the Sun, the source of all natural and earthly lights. We are called to be like the moon, lenses, and mirrors that pick up light and reflect it without diminishing its intensity or brightness. For this to be possible, we must first position ourselves on the same axis with Christ, the source of our light and life.

In the second reading, Paul makes a significant salvific point. This is the fact that this light that Christ shines upon us does not segregate or discriminate. He writes: “It means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Christ Jesus, through the gospel.” Paul simply affirms the scripture, which says that God allows his light/rain to fall on both the good and the bad. He allows it upon the good to make him better and upon the bad to transform him to good.

Today’s gospel reminds us that Christ revealed himself to us through his stars. So, like the three wise men in our gospel today, we are called to follow and adore him because: “All nations shall fall prostrate before you O Lord!” (Ps 71, 3). However, our worship must be sincere, like the Magi’s, instead of being like king Herod’s false proposal. It must be genuine worship devoid of deceit. In light of this, we must offer ourselves entirely to Him. If we humbly adore and pay our newborn king fitting and sincere homage, our light and star will equally shine forth, and others will see it and search for us to pay our tribute to him.

Today, God reveals himself to us because he is good and loving. The light that shines forth upon us today is the light of life. Today the Lord Jesus Christ further extends and expands the horizon of his love to us by not being selfish. Instead, he allows his light to shine on us in order to illuminate the darkness of our lives. The lesson today is that as Christ illumines our lives this New Year with his light and divine presence, we too must pass on the light. Another is that if we must get to our heavenly destination, we must continue to follow the star and light that Christ shows us.

Finally, we must not allow ourselves to be deceived or distracted. Trusting that God will not mislead or misguide us, we must continue to look out for his star and light along the part of our journey to eternity. Whenever we are confused or come to the crossroads of life, we must seek divine guidance and counsel in our lives. Let implore the Lord: Father, guide us with your light. Help us to recognize Christ in the Eucharist and welcome him with love, for he is Lord forever and ever. Amen!

 ¡Amado, Levántate y Brilla!

Hoy es la Epifanía del Señor, que informa la elección del tema de nuestra reflexión, ¡amado, levántate y brilla! No hay mejor época para pedir a uno que se levante y brille, que durante esta gloriosa temporada del nacimiento del Mesías y el Año Nuevo. Este es el mejor momento para recordar una vez más la historia del escudo oxidado que dijo al Sol: “¡Deslúmbrame!” Mientras el Sol respondió: “¡Púlete tú mismo, y te deslumbraré!” Por lo tanto, esta temporada debemos estar levantados y brillando debido a que: “En Su luz, vemos la luz” (Sal 36, 9).

El término Epifanía es de origen griego, “epiphaninen.” Se trata de un verbo con los siguientes sinónimos o significados: “revelar”, “manifiesto” o “dar a conocer”, que celebra las muchas maneras en que Jesús se ha revelado a sí mismo a nosotros. Estos incluyen los eventos que sacan a la luz su misión y de su divinidad; la visita de los Magos (Mt 2, 10-12); el bautismo de Jesús (Mc 1, 9-11; y el milagro de Caná (Jn 2, 1-11). Objetivamente hablando sólo las cosas buenas se revelan mientras que las malas están ocultas para evitar vergüenza. Incluso cuando las malas se revelan, se hace con el fin de exponer lo malo. No se revela con orgullo o alegría.

La primera lectura de hoy del profeta Isaías nos insta a: “¡Levántate y resplandece Jerusalén, porque ha llegado tu luz y la gloria del Señor se eleva sobre usted!” La gloria del Señor es el mismo Cristo quien ha venido a habitar entre nosotros. Él es la fuente de todas las luces en el mundo. Es como el Sol, la fuente de todo natural y terrenal. Estamos llamados a ser como la luna, lentes y espejos que recogen la luz y reflejan, por supuesto, sin disminuir su intensidad o brillo. Para que esto sea posible, en primer lugar, debemos posicionarnos sobre el mismo eje con Cristo la fuente de nuestra luz y vida.

En la segunda lectura, san Pablo hace un muy importante punto salvífico. Este es el hecho de que esta luz que Cristo resplandece sobre nosotros no segregar ni discrimina. Escribe: “Lo que significa que los paganos ahora comparten la misma herencia, que son partes de un mismo cuerpo, y que la misma promesa se ha realizado a los mismos, por medio de Cristo Jesús, por medio del evangelio.” Pablo simplemente afirma la escritura que dice que Dios permite su luz/lluvia para caer en los buenos y malos. Él permite que caiga a los buenos con el fin de hacerlos mejor y a los malos con el fin de transformarlos en buenos.

El Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que Cristo se nos ha revelado a través de sus estrellas. Por lo tanto, estamos llamados como los tres reyes magos en nuestro Evangelio de hoy para seguir y adorarlo porque: “¡Todas las naciones deberán postrarse ante usted Oh Señor!” (Sal 71, 3). Sin embargo, nuestra adoración debe ser sincera como la de los Reyes Magos, en contraposición a la falsa propuesta del rey Herodes. Debe de ser un auténtico culto desprovisto de engaño. A la luz de esto, debemos ofrecernos totalmente a Él. Si humildemente adoramos y rendimos sincero homenaje a nuestro recién nacido Rey, nuestra propia luz y la estrella también brillarán y otros lo verán y nos buscarán con el fin de rendir tributo.

Hoy en día, Dios se revela a nosotros, porque Él es bueno y amoroso. La luz que brilla sobre nosotros en el día de hoy es la luz de la vida. Hoy en día, el Señor Jesucristo extiende y expande el horizonte de su amor a nosotros por no ser egoísta. Más bien, Él permite que su luz brille sobre nosotros con el fin de iluminar la oscuridad de nuestras vidas. La lección de hoy es que, al igual que Cristo ilumina nuestra vida este Nuevo Año con su propia luz y presencia divina, nosotros también debemos pasar la luz. Otra es que, si tenemos que llegar a nuestro destino, nosotros debemos continuar con la estrella y la luz que Cristo nos muestra.

Por último, no hay que dejarse engañar o distraer. Confiando en que Dios no confunde o engaña, debemos seguir buscando su estrella y la luz a lo largo de nuestro camino hacia la eternidad. Cada vez que se encuentren confundidos o lleguen al cruce de la vida, debemos buscar orientación divina y de asesoramiento en nuestras vidas. Implore al Señor: “Padre, guíanos con su luz. Ayúdanos a reconocer a Cristo en la Eucaristía y recibirlo con amor, Porque Él es el Señor eternamente y para siempre.” ¡Amén!

Christ, God’s Wisdom and Light that Dispels our Darkness

“In the beginning was the Word…a light shine in the dark, a light that darkness could not over power…the Word was the true light that enlightens all men…” Today is the 2^nd Sunday in the octave of Christmas. This Sunday, we continue to savor the joy of the newborn king. We continue to greet the Word made flesh that now dwells among us, and we continue to rejoice because, as the wisdom of God, he dispels our darkness and illuminates our lives. Today, the Church invites us to reflect on the import of Christ’s coming to us.

There is a strong relationship between wisdom and light. They are synonymous with each other. On the contrary, light or wisdom and darkness are opposites. Light is always contra darkness and dispels it. The Book of Wisdom addresses God as the one who “made all things by your word; God’s eternal, creative, and illuminating power” (Wis 9:1). Proverbs equally writes: “The Lord by wisdom founded the earth” (Pr 3:19). “Light,” “Word,” and “Wisdom” are seen as the same. This is what they achieve: “For while gentle silence enveloped all thing, your all-powerful Word leaped from heaven, into the midst of the land that was doomed…” (Wis 18, 14-16).

Today, wisdom is personified in our first reading. He is none other than Jesus Christ, the fullness of God’s wisdom. One important point to note from this reading is the fact that wisdom proceeds from God. Thus, wisdom speaks: “From eternity, in the beginning, he created me…” In other words, he was part and parcel of the nature of God. The good news of this season is that after ages, he is now with us as a human to help us work and walk in the light. Who are these privileged people? My dear, we are! Therefore, the cause of our eternal joy this season is that God highly favors us. However, we must open ourselves so that He can make use of us adequately. If we do, we shall become wise and enlightened because iron sharpens iron, and fire begets fire.

In our second reading today, Paul continues to thank and bless God, “who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings of heaven in Christ.” This spiritual blessing is Jesus Christ himself, the Wisdom of God, who is with us to dispel all ignorance and illuminate our dark spots. Also, Paul reminds us that we are those chosen and favored by God. This is not only to be holy and spotless but also for adoption as fellow brethren of Christ.

So, as we continue to rejoice this season, let us know that Christ’s birth sealed our adoption and opened a door for all of us into God’s heart. Therefore, as Paul prayed, “May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ… give you the spirit of wisdom and perception of what is revealed.” Let us welcome wisdom into our lives as our guide. Without wisdom, we cannot appreciate what wonders God has worked for us this season. Without the eyes of our mind being opened by the “Ancient of Days” himself, we will remain in perpetual ignorance and our minds always clogged with wickedness.

Today as was on Christmas day, our gospel kicks off with a description of God’s “Logos” or Word. John reminds us of the following: “Through his Word, the heavens were made.” John describes Jesus as God’s creative, life, and light-giving Word that has come to us in human form. Indeed, Jesus is the Wisdom and Power of God, which created and sustains the world. Therefore, to save us, He assumed our nature. Jesus became man while remaining truly God. What he was (Divine), he remained, and what he was not (human nature), he has assumed for the sake of our salvation.

Jesus Christ is truly the Son of God. He is truly the wisdom and light that dispels the darkness of our life and world. Without losing his divinity, he became man and our brother. He is the one with whom now we shear the same paternity as adopted children of God. His acceptance to be born like us gained us this exalted position and illuminates our world. Finally, for allowing the light of his face to shine upon us this season through his Word, let us exclaim: “O Lord, you are my light and my salvation” (Ps 127:1).

Cristo, Sabiduría y Luz de Dios que disipa nuestra oscuridad

Hoy es el segundo domingo de la octava de Navidad. En este domingo, seguimos en la alegría del recién nacido rey. Seguimos saludando la Palabra hecha carne, que ahora habita entre nosotros. Seguimos alegres porque, Cristo disipa nuestra tiniebla e ilumina nuestra vida.

Hay una gran relación entre la sabiduría y la luz. De hecho, son sinónimos entre sí. Por el contrario, la luz o la sabiduría y la oscuridad son términos opuestos. Luz es siempre en contra la tiniebla y la disipa.

El Libro de Sabiduría dice que Dios, “ha hecho todas las cosas por su palabra.” Que su palabra es eterna, creativa, potente, y la luz (Sb 9:1). En el libro de Proverbios también dice: “El Señor de la sabiduría fundó la tierra” (Pr 3:19). “La Luz”, “Palabra” y “Sabiduría” son vistas como una y la misma cosa. Esto es lo que se va a realizar: “Mientras que un suave silencio envuelve toda cosa, su todo-poderosa palabra saltó desde el cielo, en medio de la tierra que está condenada…” (Sb 18:14-16).

Hoy, la sabiduría fue personificada en nuestra primera lectura. Es Jesucristo, la plenitud de la sabiduría de Dios. Un punto importante para tener en cuenta en esta lectura es el hecho de que la sabiduría proviene de Dios. “Desde la eternidad, en el principio, me creó.” En otras palabras, Él fue parte integrante de la naturaleza de Dios. La buena noticia de esta temporada es que después de tantos años, ahora esa palabra está con nosotros como humano y nuestra luz.

En la segunda lectura de hoy, san Pablo sigue agradeciendo a Dios, “que nos ha bendecido con toda bendición espiritual en Cristo.” Esta bendición espiritual es la misma persona de Jesucristo, la sabiduría de Dios, que está con nosotros para disipar toda la ignorancia y que ilumina nuestra oscuridad. Además, Pablo nos recuerda que somos los elegidos de Dios para ser los hermanos de Cristo

Hoy, como en el día de Navidad, nuestro evangelio comienza con una descripción del “Logos” de Dios o la Palabra. Juan nos la recuerda de la siguiente manera: “a través de su Palabra hizo el cielo.” Juan describe a Jesús como la creación de Dios, la vida, la luz y la palabra que ha llegado a nosotros en forma humana. Verdaderamente, Jesús es la sabiduría y el poder de Dios que crea y sostiene el mundo. Por lo tanto, para salvarnos, asumió nuestra naturaleza. Jesús se hizo verdaderamente hombre al mismo tiempo verdadero Dios. Lo que era (divino), permaneció, y lo que no era (humano), lo asumió por el bien de nuestra salvación.

Jesucristo es verdaderamente el Hijo de Dios. Él es verdaderamente la sabiduría y la luz que disipa las tinieblas de nuestro mundo, y nos da la vida. Sin perder su divinidad se convirtió en un hombre y nuestro hermano. Su aceptación de ser nacido como nosotros, nos da una posición exaltada.

Por último, para que la luz de su rostro siempre brillar sobre nosotros esta temporada le saludemos con el salmista: “Señor, tú eres mi luz y mi salvación” (Sal 127:1).

Congratulations, my dear brethren! Today is a special day for all of us. So, happy New Year, and feast day of Mary, Mother of God. We give thanks to God for today’s celebrations, both of which are excellent sources of blessings. First, for the gift of a new year. Second, for the gift of a precious mother to accompany, comfort, and intercede for us throughout this year.

The title “Mother of God” is from the Greek “Theotokos” (God-bearer). Through this celebration, the church reminds us of Mary’s unique role in God’s plan. This solemnity can be traced back to the Council of Ephesus in 431. Officially, it was celebrated first in Portugal as Mary’s Divine Maternity. This was with the permission of Pope Benedict IV, in 1575.

In 1931, Pope Pius XI extended the feast to the entire church. Finally, in 1974, Pope Paul VI removed the feast of Christ’s Circumcision from the liturgical calendar on the first day of the year. He replaced it with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.”

About the important role of Mary in God’s plan and today’s solemnity, the Church teaches: “Mary, the all-holy and ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. “For the first time, in the plan of salvation, and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men” (CCC 721).

New Year offers us new opportunities, new ideas, and new resolutions. It is a sign of regeneration and a time of new hope. Each new year, we make new resolutions. Unfortunately, we hardly keep or fulfill them. Why? We are possibly in a hurry to make them, and consequently, do not consult God about such resolutions.

One important thing we must do this year is to resolve to strengthen our relationship with God. Proverbs says: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Pr 16, 3). Also, as the psalmist admonishes us: Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He shall bring it to pass (Ps 37: 5). Therefore, this year we must develop the resilient spirit of Moses who insisted before God: “If you do not personally go with us, we shall not leave this place… (Ex 33, 15). Also, like Enoch, let us walk with God (Gen 5, 27).

Today’s first reading is a crucial new year’s blessing direct from God to us, his people. It is a sign of God’s faithfulness and His willingness to work with us this year. Hence, through His blessings, God has equipped us for the journey ahead this year. So, all we need say is a resounding amen to this blessing and walk justly with God this year.

In the second reading, Paul recounts the incarnation of God in Mary. That is, how God took flesh in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Paul reminds us of our sonship by participation and our adoption as children of the same Father with Christ. Consequently, He also reminds us that we are children of Mary, the Mother of God, through adoption.

The gospel simply teaches us that Mary fulfilled her role as Mother towards her son. She conceived and nurtured him with love and tenderness. She equally accompanied him through every step and stage of his life, even till his death on the cross. In other words, not only did she give birth to Jesus, Mary helped Him to accomplish God’s plan for humanity. Through this, she presents herself as the epitome and model of good motherhood.

So, as we continue our walk with God this year, let us continuously ask for the intercession Mary, Mother of God: Oh, Holy Mother of God, despise not our prayers in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, oh glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

¡Muchas Felicidades queridos hermanos! Hoy es un día especial para todos nosotros. Así que, feliz año nuevo, y la fiesta de María, madre de Dios. Damos gracias a Dios por las celebraciones de hoy, las cuales son grandes fuentes de bendiciones. Primero, por el regalo de un año nuevo. Segundo, por el don de una preciosa madre para acompañar, consolar e interceder por nosotros a lo largo de este año.

El título “madre de Dios” es del griego “Theotokos” (portador de Dios). A través de esta celebración, la Iglesia nos recuerda el papel especial de María en el plan de Dios. Esta solemnidad puede ser trazado al concilio de Éfeso en 431. Oficialmente, se celebró primero en Portugal como la fiesta de la maternidad divina de María. Esto fue con el permiso del Papa Benedicto IV, en 1575.

Por primera vez, en el plan de salvación y porque su espíritu la había preparado, el padre encontró el lugar de la morada donde su hijo y su espíritu podían habitar entre los hombres (CIC 721).

El año nuevo nos ofrece nuevas oportunidades, nuevas ideas y nuevas resoluciones. Es un signo de regeneración y un tiempo de nueva esperanza. Cada año nuevo, hacemos nuevas resoluciones. Lamentablemente, apenas los guardamos o cumplimos. ¿Porqué? Posiblemente, porque siempre tenemos prisa por hacerlas, y consecuentemente, no consultamos a Dios sobre tales resoluciones.

Por lo tanto, una cosa importante que debemos hacer este año es resuelva a fortalecer nuestra relación con Dios. Proverbios dice: “encomiende todas tus obras al Señor, y él establecerá tus planes (Prov 16, 3). También, el salmista nos amonesta: “Comprometa al Señor tus empresas; Confía en él que lo hará bien (Sal 37:5). Por lo tanto, este año debemos desarrollar el espíritu resiliente de Moisés que insistió ante Dios: “Si no nos acompañas, no dejaremos este lugar (Ex 33, 15). También, como Enoc, caminemos con Dios este año (Gen 5, 27).

Nuestra primera lectura es una bendición importante del año nuevo y directa de Dios para nosotros, su pueblo. Es una señal de la fidelidad de Dios, y su voluntad a caminar con nosotros este año. Por lo tanto, a través de sus bendiciones, Dios nos ha preparado para nuestro camino este año. Por lo tanto, todo lo que necesitamos decir es un resonante amén a esta bendición, y caminar justamente con Dios este año.

En la segunda lectura, Pablo relata la encarnación de Dios en María. Es decir, como Dios hacerse carne en la Santísima Virgen María. Pablo nos recuerda nuestra filiación por la participación, y nuestra adopción como hijos del mismo padre con Cristo. En consecuencia, nos recuerda que, por la misma adopción, somos hijos de María, Madre de Dios.

El evangelio simplemente nos enseña que María cumplió su papel como madre hacia su hijo. Ella lo concibió y lo nutrió con amor y ternura. Igualmente, lo acompañó a través de cada paso y etapa de su vida, incluso hasta su muerte en la cruz. En otras palabras, no sólo dio a luz a Jesús, María le ayudó a cumplir el plan de Dios para la humanidad. A través de esto, ella se presenta como el epítome y modelo de la buena maternidad.

Así que, mientras continuamos nuestro caminar con Dios este año, pidamos constantemente la intercesión María, madre de Dios: Oh, Santa Madre de Dios, no desprecie nuestras oraciones en nuestras necesidades, sino líbranos de todos los peligros, oh gloriosa y bendita Virgen. Amén. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

Living the Spirit of the Holy Family

On this first Sunday of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Holy Family of Nazareth. That is the family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Sociologically speaking, the family is the nucleus of the human society. It is a place where life and learning begin.

Today’s celebration reminds us of the family’s specific and essential role in our lives. The Church teaches that the sustenance of our society depends much on the continuous existence of the family. Therefore, she presents the Holy Family of Nazareth as a real model for all families.

Today’s celebration highlights that an ideal family consists of basically a man and a woman, and if God wills, children (Ps 127). Any “union” other than this in the name of the family is an aberration. It contradicts the will of God, who, in the beginning, made them male and female. He did not take the ribs of Adam to create another man for Adam. Instead, from Adam’s ribs, he created a biologically and functionally different being, a woman (Gen 1 and 2).

This celebration comes at the most appropriate time when this sacred institution is threatened by all sorts of unhealthy ideologies and social practices. The call today is for us to rise and to emulate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

The first reading of this Sunday explicitly outlines the three different components of a family, the Father, “the first arm,”; the mother, “the second arm,”; and children, “the third arm” of the family. Each is important and unique in their positions and function. It equally outlines the status of each member in relation to one another. In this reading, the roles of children towards their parents are significantly stressed. This role centers on honor, obedience, and humility.

In today’s second reading, Paul reminds us of very significant virtues that are very important to sustain our families. Any family where these exist would remain united. They include compassion, kindness, humility, patience, peace, forgiveness, and love.

Today’s gospel also presents the Holy Family. In addition to the virtues that Paul enumerated above, there are two fundamental characteristics of the Holy family: praying and working together. This reminds us of the saying that “a family that prays together, stays together.” 

Together, Mary and Joseph took their son Jesus to the temple for consecration. They acted and prayed together for the good of their family.

When Herod threatened their baby, they decided together in prayers to flee to Egypt. This is an essential virtue to emulate from them. Mostly, in our world where individualism has done great harm to the family institution. Praying and working together sustains the family. These help our families overcome difficult moments in life. This is true of the saying that “united we stand, divide we fall.”

Finally, as an institution, the family has suffered so much in many nations.  It is already at the point of collapse. The only way to heal and restore its dignity is by emulating the Holy Family of Nazareth as our role model. So, let us pray: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph make our families be like yours.
