Dear brethren, this is the night for which we have been preparing for the past four weeks. Today, unto us is born the savior of the world. He is the prince of peace, the king of kings, and the Lord of lords.

The good news is simple; God has fulfilled his promise to his people. God is with us. Most importantly, God has shown us his great mercy and love. With the events of this night, we have seen the incredible fidelity of God to us, his people.

Our first reading this Christmas night from the prophet Isaiah’s book captures and summarizes what we have achieved through Christ’s birth. The prophet says: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. On those who live in the land of deep shadow, a great light has shone.”

The light of God that shines on us is Christ, the newly born. He is the light of the nations and of all who have accepted him. Never again shall we walk in darkness. He came to dispel the darkness that darkened our hearts and our world.

Most importantly, with the birth of Christ this night, we have begun a new season of joy, a new season of our salvific history, and a new life full of hope because God is with us.

As Titus captures it in our second reading, with the birth of Christ today: “The grace of God had appeared, and it has made salvation possible for the whole human race…The glorious appearance of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”  Also, this night we live in a new season of the Grace which God himself has fashioned for us.

Finally, our duty during this time of Christmas is to do what the shepherds and angels did, adoring the child Jesus and singing the glory of the Lord. Therefore, our song today and forever shall be: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men of goodwill, who enjoy God’s favors.”

Also, it behooves us to spread the good news to the ends of the world. That today, in Bethlehem, of Nazareth to us, is born a great savior. Rejoice brethren, for God, has shown us his great mercy. Merry Christmas!

Queridos hermanos, esta es la noche por la cual hemos sido preparando hace cuatro semanas. Hoy a nosotros ha nacido el Salvador del mundo, el Príncipe de la paz, el Rey de los reyes, y el Señor de los señores.

La buena noticia es sencilla, Dios ha cumplido su promesa a su pueblo, Dios está con nosotros. Y más importante, Dios nos ha mostrado una gran misericordia y amor. Con el acontecimiento de esta noche, hemos visto la gran fidelidad de Dios a su nosotros, su pueblo.

Nuestra primera lectura de esta noche de Navidad del libro del profeta Isaías, captura y se resume todo lo que hemos logrado por el nacimentero de Emanuel, Dios está con nosotros. El profeta dice: “El pueblo que caminaba en tinieblas vio la luz grande, y a los que habitaban tierras de sombras, una luz les brillo.”

La luz de Dios que brilla sobre nosotros es Cristo, el recién nacido. Él es la luz de las naciones y de todo aquel que lo ha aceptado. Y nunca más camináramos en las tinieblas. El vino para disparar las tinieblas que oscureció nuestros corazones y nuestro mundo.

Mas importante, con el nacimiento de Cristo esta noche hemos empezado una nueva etapa de alegría, una nueva etapa de nuestra historia salvífica, y una nueva vida llena de esperanza, porque, Dios está con nosotros.

Como Tito lo captura en nuestra segunda lectura, con el nacimiento de Cristo hoy: “Ha aparecido la gracia de Dios que trae la salvación para todos los hombres…la aparición gloriosa del Dios y Salvador nuestro señor: Jesucristo.” Por eso, también, vivimos en una nueva etapa de la gracia de nuestro Dios.

Finalmente, nuestro deber en este tiempo de Navidad es hacer lo que los pastores y los ángeles hicieron, alabar al niño Jesús, y cantando la gloria del Señor. Por eso, nuestro cantico hoy, y en adelante será: “Gloria a Dios en el cielo, y en la tierra paz a los hombres que aman el Señor.”

También, a nosotros consta, a difundir la buena noticia hasta los confines del mundo que hoy, en belén de Nazaret, nos ha nacido un gran salvador. Alégrense hermanos porque Dios, nos ha mostrado su gran misericordia. Feliz Navidad

Last week we celebrated “Gaudete” Sunday when the church encouraged us to rejoice because our Lord is near. On this fourth and last Sunday of Advent, our first reading and gospel have one thing in common.

This is the fact that from the least of the lowly clan of Judah and Mary the humble handmaid, God has prepared a body for Christ, the Prince of peace. According to our second reading from Hebrew, Christ assures his father for our sake: “Here I am! I am coming to do your will!” He comes soon to fill our hearts with his spirit of peace and joy as he did to Elizabeth and the child in her womb.

As we gradually approach the fulfillment of God’s promise to us, the gospel of this Sunday presents us with the visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Despite her pregnancy, Mary still found time to visit her cousin to share her joy and assist her. This is proof of her spirit of hospitality, generosity, humility, love, and faith in God who chose her. This is why she is blessed. It was not only Mary that visited Elizabeth but also the Divine Child and Prince of peace did. Hence, this visit was divine.

Also, it is important to note that what happened between the child in Mary’s womb and the child in Elizabeth’s womb was a divine encounter. What happened during this divine visit and encounter is what the psalmist describes as: “When love and faithfulness meet together when justice and truth meet; righteousness and peace kiss and embrace each other” (Ps 85, 10). Both Elizabeth and Mary felt and saw it happen spiritually.

The visit of Mary to Elizabeth was not a mere coincidence. It was a well-thought plan of God, which he executed at the appropriate time. This season, God has planned to honor each one of us personally with a divine visit. This visit is not by accident. Instead, it is a well-planned visit. He knows the way to where we live, knows our house number, knows the number of our flat, and knows exactly the number of our room. He comes quickly to visit us personally to bring about some remarkable changes in our lives.

This season brethren, what we are about to have is a divine encounter with the child Jesus. This encounter will fill us with the Holy Spirit, who will empower us as he empowered Elizabeth. This divine encounter with Christ will bring us transformation, and it will provoke peace and greater joy in our hearts as it did for Elizabeth and the child in her womb.

Finally, soon and very soon, we shall hear a knock at our door and listen to the voice of Mary, the new arc of the covenant bearing the divine child. They are close to us. So, let us dot all our “Is” and cross all our “Ts” to receive them so that our joy may be complete this season. As we wait for our divine visitation and encounter this season, let us implore the Lord: “God of hosts, bring us back; let your face shine on us, and we shall be saved.”

La semana pasada celebramos el domingo de “Gaudate” cuando la iglesia nos animó a alegrarse porque el Señor ya está cerca. En este cuarto y último domingo de Adviento, nuestra primera lectura y el evangelio tienen algo en común. Este es el hecho de que, desde el menor de los humildes entre las tribus de Judá, y de María, la humilde esclava, Dios ha preparado un cuerpo para Cristo, el príncipe de la Paz. Cristo, según nuestra segunda lectura de hebreos, asegura su padre: “¡Aquí estoy! ¡Yo vengo a hacer tu voluntad!” Él Viene pronto para llenar nuestro corazón con su espíritu de paz y de alegría al igual que lo hizo a Isabel y el niño en su vientre.

Como acercamos poco a poco al cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios para nosotros, el Evangelio de este domingo nos presenta la visitación de María a su prima Isabel. A pesar de su embarazo, María todavía encontró tiempo para visitar a su prima para compartir su alegría y ayudarla. Esto muestra su espíritu de hospitalidad, generosidad, humildad, amor, y su fe en Dios que la eligió. Por esta razón, ella es bendecida. No fue sólo María quien visitó a Isabel sino también, el Divino Niño y Príncipe de la paz. Por lo tanto, esta visita era divina.

También, es importante tener en cuenta que lo que sucedió entre los niños en el vientre de María e Isabel fue un encuentro divino. Lo que sucedió durante esta visita y encuentro divino es exactamente lo que el salmista describe como: “Cuando el amor y la fidelidad se reúnen, y cuando la justicia y la verdad se reúnen; la justicia y la paz se besan y abrazan” (Sal 85, 10). Isabel y María sintieron y vieron lo que sucedió espiritualmente.

La visita de María a Isabel no era una mera coincidencia. Era un pozo de pensamiento del plan de Dios, que fue ejecutado en el momento adecuado. Esta temporada, Dios ha planeado honrar a cada uno de nosotros personalmente con una visita divina. Esta visita no es por un accidente. Al contrario, es una visita bien planificada. Él conoce donde vivimos, conoce el camino a nuestra casa, Él sabe exactamente el número de nuestro apartamento, y sabe exactamente el número de nuestro cuarto y puerta. Llega rápidamente a visitarnos personalmente a fin de lograr algunos cambios notables en nuestras vidas.

Esta temporada hermanos, lo que vamos a tener es una divina visitación y un divino encuentro con el niño Jesús. Este encuentro nos llenará con el Espíritu Santo que nos facultará como lo hizo a Isabel. Este encuentro divino con Cristo nos traerá la transformación y provocará la paz y la mayor alegría en nuestros corazones como hizo para Isabel y el niño en su vientre.

Por último, pronto, y muy pronto, escucharemos una llamada a nuestra puerta, y escucharemos la voz de María el nuevo arco de la alianza con el divino niño. Están cerca de nosotros. Así que, debemos estar listos a recibirlos, y para que nuestra alegría sea completa esta temporada. Como esperamos nuestra divina visita y divino encuentro esta temporada, pidámosle a Dios: “¡Oh “Señor de los ejércitos! Restáuranos, que brille tu rostro sobre nosotros, y nos salve”.

Brethren, be Joyful and Happy in the Lord

Today is the third Sunday of Advent called “Gaudete Sunday.” The term Gaudate simply means “to rejoice.” This Advent, we are preparing to live a new experience of love and faith in God. Historically, Christ has been born, but he must reside in the heart of each Christian. This season, the church provides us a new opportunity to realize this birth in faith. So, it is a great reason to be happy because we are about to live this experience.

Hence, as we come closer to the feast of Christmas, the church encourages us to rejoice because God is about to fulfill his promise to us. However, this does not mean we have come to the end of our preparation. Instead, it is a way of urging us to be more focused and courageous. It is also a way of assuring us that our preparations shall soon be rewarded.

Today, all our readings exalt us to be joyful as we wait for the Lord’s coming. The first reading captures the festive mood of this season and calls us to shout for joy! The reason is simple! Our Lord is coming with lots of good packages like justice, liberation, peace, etcetera. Above all, he is ready to visit us personally if we dispose of ourselves well.

The psalmist equally taps on the exact string: “Sing and shout for joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.” Yes, the one we await never promises and fails. He acquits the innocent and lifts the oppressed. Therefore, this is a time for us to get our demands ready in joyful expectation. It is a time to cast off all moody or gloomy faces, a time to be cheerful, a time to be radiant, and a time to celebrate joyfully.

Paul, the apostle, understood this very well and so insists: “I want you to be happy always in the Lord. I repeat, what I want is your happiness.” It is essential to carefully note that what Paul says is “BE ALWAYS HAPPY IN THE LORD.” The joy that Paul speaks of here is not the type that comes out of sheer fun. Instead, it is a very profound sentiment that proceeds from a solid faith in God and his promises to us, his children.

This season, my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, we have our role to play for our joy to be complete. This role is what John the Baptist spelled out in today’s gospel. We must be charitable, forgiving, caring, just, modest in all our actions, seek reconciliation and peace. We must shun all acts that are capable of making life difficult for others.

Finally, we need patience and constancy, which are fundamental spiritual virtues. Patience and endurance in the practice of God’s commandments this Advent will lead us very soon to sanctity and the fullness of joy. As we wait joyfully for the fulfillment of Christ’s promises to us this season, may the Almighty God fill our hearts with charity and goodwill. Amen!

Hoy es el tercer domingo de Adviento, conocido como “domingo de Gaudate.” El término “Gaudate” simplemente significa “regocijarse.” En este Adviento preparamos para vivir una nueva experiencia de amor y fe en Dios. Históricamente, Cristo ha nacido, pero Él debe nacer en ffffel corazón de cada cristiano. Esta temporada, la Iglesia nos ofrece una nueva oportunidad para realizar este nacimiento en la fe. Así que, es un gran motivo para ser feliz porque estamos a punto de vivir esta experiencia.

Por lo tanto, como nos acercamos a la fiesta de Navidad, la Iglesia nos anima a regocijarnos porque Dios está a punto de cumplir su promesa para nosotros. Sin embargo, esto no significa que hemos llegado al final de nuestra preparación. En cambio, es una forma de instarnos a estar más enfocados y valientes. También es una manera de asegurarnos que pronto nuestros preparativos y expectativas serán recompensadas.

Hoy, todas nuestras lecturas nos exaltan ser felices y alegres como esperamos la venida del Señor. La primera lectura captura el ambiente festivo de esta temporada y así nos llama a gritar de alegría. La razón es simple. Nuestro Señor viene con un montón de buenos regalos como: justicia, misericordia, paz, liberación, etcétera. Sobre todo, Él está listo a visitarnos personalmente si estamos dispuestos a recibirle.

El salmista también nos insta: “Griten jubilosos; que grande es en medio de ustedes, el Santo de Israel.” Sí, el que esperamos nunca promete y falla. Él absuelve al inocente y eleva a los oprimidos. Por lo tanto, este es nuestro momento de momento conseguir nuestras gozosas expectativas. Es un momento de deshacerse de las caras de mal humor o tristes, un momento de estar alegre, un tiempo de ser radiante, y un tiempo de celebrar con alegría.

El apóstol Pablo entendió esto muy bien y así insiste: “Hermanos, sean siempre alegres en el Señor. Lo repito, sean alegres.” Es muy importante observar cuidadosamente que, lo que dice Pablo es: “Ser siempre feliz en el Señor.” La alegría que Pablo habla aquí no es el tipo que sale de la mera diversión. Por el contrario, es un sentimiento muy profundo que procede de una fe muy profunda en Dios y de sus promesas a nosotros sus hijos.

Queridos hermanos, esta temporada para que nuestra alegría sea completa, tenemos nuestro propio papel que desempeñar. Este papel es lo que Juan el Bautista describió en el Evangelio de hoy. Para que nuestra alegría sea completa esta temporada, debemos ser caritativos, misericordiosos, bondadosos, justos, modestos en todas nuestras acciones, y buscar la reconciliación y la paz. Debemos rechazar todos los actos que son capaces de hacer la vida difícil a los demás.

Por último, necesitamos paciencia y constancia que son virtudes espirituales muy importantes. Con paciencia y constancia en la práctica de los mandamientos de Dios, este Adviento nos conducirá muy pronto a la santidad y a la plenitud de la alegría. Como esperamos con alegría el cumplimiento de la promesa de Dios a nosotros esta temporada, que el Dios todopoderoso colme nuestros corazones con caridad y buena voluntad. ¡Amén!

On this second week of Advent, we continue our journey of hope and waiting for the coming of Christ. Today, the church invites us to celebrate the marvels that God is about to work for us in a couple of weeks from now. This season, we wait in joyful hope for that “Day of the Lord” when his work will be complete in us.

All the readings of this Sunday are wake-up calls for us to prepare for the great encounter with the Lord, who is to come soon. So, while our first reading announces that God wishes to show the splendor of Christ to all nations, the second reading reminds us of “The Lord’s Day,” which obviously will initiate our salvation. This wake-up call is summed up and reflected in the prophecy of John the Baptist in today’s gospel.

Christ comes in his glory this season, but his coming will be of no use to us unless we encounter him and share in the joy that he will bring at Christmas. If we genuinely prepare for him this season, our hearts will overflow with joy like a river overflows its bank when filled. Hence, the first reading of today tells us: “…take off your dress of sorrow and distress and put on the beauty of the glory of God forever…” (Bar 5, 1-9). This is rightly so because soon and very soon, we shall joyfully welcome the Lord.

On his part, Paul encourages us to remain steadfast in good works and continue improving our ways of life until the “Day of the Lord” comes. It is important to note that we must be ready to make some sacrifices to encounter Jesus Christ and share in the joy that he brings. This entails preparing and purifying ourselves through prayer, charity, love, and reconciliation. Hence, Paul says: “…This will help you to become pure and blameless, and prepare you for the day of Christ…” (Phil 1, 8).

Furthermore, whatever will constitute an obstacle to encountering Jesus Christ this season must be entirely removed as the voice of John the Baptist re-echoes clearly to us: “Prepare a way for the Lord, make his path straight. Every valley will be filled, and every mountain and hill be laid low” (Luke 3, 5-6). This means that we must sacrifice something this season for Christ to have his place in us and for us to experience his joy when he finally comes in glory and splendor.

Therefore, this season of Advent, let us humbly join the psalmist in to implore the Lord: “Restore unto me the joy of my salvation, O Lord my God (Ps 51:12). However, it is when we have successfully and sincerely prepared that we can share and radiate in the joy of the Lord. Only then can we exclaim: “What marvels the Lord worked for us; indeed we are glad” (Ps 125:3).

Finally, as we wait and prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ this season, may the Almighty God fill us with the strength and the patience we need to persevere without fainting. May our encounter with Christ this season restore the joy of our salvation. Amen!

En esta segunda semana de Adviento, continuamos nuestro camino de esperanza de la venida de Cristo. Hoy, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar las maravillas que Dios está a punto de hacer para nosotros en un par de semanas a partir de ahora. Esta temporada, esperamos con gozo el “Día del Señor”, cuando su obra se completará en nosotros.

Todas las lecturas de este domingo son una llamada para despertarnos a estar preparados para el gran encuentro con el Señor que vendrá muy pronto. Así, mientras que la primera lectura anuncia que Dios desea mostrar el esplendor de Cristo a todas las naciones, la segunda lectura nos recuerda el “Día del Señor” que obviamente iniciará nuestra salvación. Esta llamada a despertar es resumida y reflejada en la profecía de Juan el Bautista en el Evangelio de hoy.

Esta temporada, Cristo viene en su gloria, y su venida no hará ningún sentido para nosotros, si no lo encontramos, y compartimos en la alegría que él traerá en la Navidad. Si verdaderamente nos preparamos para Cristo esta temporada, nuestros corazones se desbordarán de alegría como un río que sobre flujo de su banco cuando está lleno. Por lo tanto, la primera lectura de hoy nos dice: “Quítate tu ropa de duelo y aflicción, y vístete para siempre el esplendor de la gloria que viene de Dios” (Baruc 5, 1-9). Esto es con razón, porque pronto, muy pronto, vamos con alegría a darle la bienvenida al Señor.

Pablo por su parte nos anima a permanecer firmes en buenas obras y continuar mejorando nuestras formas de vida hasta que el “Día del Señor” venga. Es importante tener en cuenta que, para que podamos encontrar a Cristo y compartir la alegría que trae, debemos estar dispuestos a hacer algunos sacrificios. Esto implica prepararnos y purificarnos a través de la oración, caridad, amor, y reconciliación. Pablo dice: “Así llegarán al día de Cristo limpios e irreprochables” (Phil 1, 8).

Además, lo que sea que constituya un obstáculo para el encuentro con Jesucristo esta temporada, debe ser completamente removido como la voz de Juan el Bautista dice claramente “Preparen el camino del Señor, hagan rectos sus senderos. Todo valle será rellenado, toda montaña y colina, rebajada”.  Esto significa que algo debe ser sacrificado esta temporada para que Cristo tenga su lugar en nosotros y para que podemos experimentar la alegría de Cristo cuando venga en gloria y esplendor.

Por lo tanto, este tiempo de Adviento, nos permite unirnos humildemente al salmista a implorar al Señor: “¡Restaura en mí la alegría de mi salvación, oh, Señor mi Dios! (Sal 51, 12). Sin embargo, es solo cuando estamos preparados que, podemos compartir e irradiar la alegría del Señor. Entonces, podemos exclamar: “Que maravilla el Señor ha hecho para nosotros, y estamos alegres” (Sal 125, 3).

Finalmente, como esperamos la venida de Cristo esta temporada, que Dios el todopoderoso nos colme con la fuerza y la paciencia que necesitamos para perseverar sin desmayar. Que nuestro encuentro con Cristo esta temporada restaura la alegría de nuestra salvación. ¡Amén!
