The Spirit of Christ Confirms Us

Today is the sixth Sunday of Easter. As we approach the feast of Pentecost, the Church invites us to celebrate the coming of the Advocate. She calls us to celebrate the Spirit of truth who strengthens us in the proclamation of the good news. The message we bear is not false, rather, it comes from the Advocate.

Our first reading is a continuation of the frantic efforts the disciples of Christ are making in order to bear testimony to the risen Lord. Through their efforts, the Samaritans received their Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. On this day, Peter performed his episcopal function by laying hands upon the new converts.

The Samaritans needed the Holy Spirit as much as we do today because, it is the Holy Spirit that strengthens and makes one a true soldier of Christ (CCC 1303-4). He helps us to bear witness to the truth without fear: “You have not received the Spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of sonship.

The Spirit bears witness that we are God’s Children” (Rom 8:15-16). It is this same Spirit that resurrected Christ, that gives life to our mortal body (Rom 8: 11). As the principal agent of evangelization, He confirms the truth we preach.

As we are a couple of weeks away from Pentecost, in today’s gospel, Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. However, He gives a condition for receiving the Advocate: “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” When we do this, he adds: “I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever, that spirit of truth…I will not leave you orphans.”

What is this commandment that we must keep in order to receive the Spirit of truth? It is: “Go into the whole world and preach the good news to all creation (Mk 16: 15). It is also, a command to love both God, and our neighbor (Luke 10, 25-27).

When we do this, we are certainly preaching the good news of truth. The advocate will come to strengthens us in the way of truth. He will also come to confirm that in deeded, we are sons of God. So, let us pray: Come, O Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Hoy es el sexto domingo de Pascua. Al acercarse la fiesta de Pentecostés, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar la llegada del abogado. Ella nos llama a celebrar el espíritu de la verdad que nos fortalece en la proclamación de la buena noticia. El mensaje que llevamos no es falso, más bien, proviene del abogado.

La primera lectura es una continuación de los sinceros esfuerzos de los discípulos de Cristo a dar testimonio al Señor resucitado. A través de sus esfuerzos, los Samaritanos recibieron sus sacramentos de bautismo y confirmación. En este día, Pedro realiza su función episcopal por imponer las manos sobre los nuevos conversos.

Los Samaritanos necesitan el Espíritu Santo tanto como lo necesitamos hoy, porque, es el Espíritu Santo que fortalece y hace a uno un verdadero soldado de Cristo (CIC1303-5). Él nos ayuda a dar testimonio de la verdad sin temor: “No han recibido el espíritu de timidez, sino el espíritu de la filiación.”

El espíritu testimonia que somos hijos de Dios (Ro 8:15-16). Es, este mismo espíritu que resucitó a Cristo, que da vida a nuestro cuerpo mortal (Ro 8:11). Como el principal agente de evangelización, se confirma la verdad que predicamos.

Como hace falta un par de semanas de Pentecostés, en el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos promete el Espíritu Santo, el defensor. Sin embargo, se da una condición para recibir el Espiritu Santo, nuestro abogado: “Si me aman guardaran mis mandamientos.” Cuando hacemos esto, Cristo añade: “voy a pedir al padre y les dará otro abogado que estará con ustedes para siempre, ese espíritu de la verdad. Yo no les dejaré a huérfanos.”

¿Qué es este mandamiento que debemos tener para recibir el espíritu de verdad? Es: “vayan al todo mundo y predican la buena nueva a toda la creación (Mc 16:15). Además, es, cumplir el mandamiento de amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo (Lucas 10:25-27).

Cuando hacemos esto, sin duda estamos predicando la buena noticia de verdad. El abogado llega y nos fortalece en el camino de verdad. También él vendrá a confirmar que, de verdad, somos hijos de Dios. Por lo tanto, oremos: Ven, Espíritu Santo, y renueva la faz de la tierra. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Today is the Friday of the fifth week of Easter. Except for verses 9-11, today’s gospel is a repetition of the gospel of yesterday.

One question that both a sermon preacher and his audience usually ask when readings are repeated is, why repeat this reading? We read and heard it yesterday!

Yes, it is a very valid and solid question, However, in both sacred scripture and everyday life, genuine repetitions serve a very important purpose. They emphasize important very themes or points.

As we have already seen, in the readings of this season of Easter, especially, in the gospel according to John, Christ repeated messages and words many times.

In today’s case, the very important theme is love. It is the foundation of our Christian faith. It is, one of the four theological virtues. Hence, it begins with, and proceeds from God. It is the foundation of our salvation.

God sent Christ to us because of his love for us (Jn 3:16). Christ responded positively because of his love for, both the Father and humanity. He came, and served with love.

Today, Christ asks us to do the same. His commandment is one and simple, “love one another as I love you.” This was his purpose of calling and choosing us, that we might be, and act like him.

It is not easy to fulfill this commandment. That is why, the same Christ assures us: “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Cor 12:9). So, like Paul, we simply need to believe that: “I can do all things, through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:19).

Yes, Christ has given us all we need to fulfill this commandment. May he fill us with his grace, so that, we may begin to love others as he loves us. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Hoy es el viernes de la quinta semana de Pascua. Excepto los versículos 9-11, el evangelio de hoy es una repetición del evangelio de ayer.

Una pregunta que tanto un predicador del sermón, como su audiencia suelen hacer cuando se repiten las lecturas es, ¿por qué repetir esta lectura? ¡Lo leímos y lo oímos ayer!

Es una pregunta muy válida y sólida. Sin embargo, tanto en la sagrada escritura, como en la vida cotidiana, las repeticiones genuinas sirven un propósito muy importante. Destacan temas, o puntos importantes.

Como ya hemos visto, en las lecturas de esta temporada de Pascua, especialmente, en el Evangelio según Juan, Cristo repitió mensajes y palabras muchas veces.

En el caso de hoy, el tema muy importante es el amor. Es el fundamento de nuestra fe cristiana. Es una de las cuatro virtudes teológicas. Por lo tanto, comienza con, y procede de Dios. Es el fundamento de nuestra salvación.

Dios nos envió a Cristo por su amor por nosotros (Jn 3:16). Cristo respondió positivamente debido a su amor por el Padre, y por la humanidad. El vino, y sirvió con amor.

Hoy, Cristo nos pide que hagamos lo mismo. Su mandamiento es uno, y simple: “¡Amen los unos a los otros, ¡como yo los he amado”! Esto fue su propósito de llamar y elegirnos, que podríamos ser, y actuar como él.

No es fácil cumplir este mandamiento. Por eso, el mismo Cristo nos asegura: “Mi gracia es suficiente para ti” (2 Cor 12:9). Así que, como Pablo, simplemente necesitamos creer que: “Puedo hacer todas las cosas, por medio de Cristo que me fortalece” (Flp 4:19).

Cristo nos ha dado todo lo que necesitamos para cumplir este mandamiento. Así que, oremos que, siempre nos llene de su gracia, para poder amar unos a los otros, como él nos ama. Alleluia, Alleluia!

On this Thursday of the fifth week of Easter, the church celebrates the feast of Saint Matthias. Originally, he was not one of the twelve Apostles. However, he was elected to replace Judas Iscariot.

Not much is known about Saint Matthias. The good news is that, like the rest of the Apostles, he he remained faithful until the end of his days. He remained in the love of Christ till the end.

In today’s gospel, Christ gave us another key to a happy life. This formula is, remaining in his love. Jesus himself remained in the love of the Father by observing the commandments that he received from his father.

Of course, remaining in the love of Christ, also, means loving others. That was how Christ expressed his love for humanity. Hence, he gives it to us as a new commandment: “Love one another as I love you.

As we celebrate the feast of one of the great Apostles (Matthias) today, this feast reminds us that the Apostles sacrificed their life both for their love for God and for others.

They demonstrated it with their own blood. So, through their great sacrifice, Matthias and his companions, fulfilled these words of Christ: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Yes, Christ did if first as a sign of his love for us, and his Apostles followed his example.

So, let us ask God to help us to always remain in his love, and that, we may also love one another, as Christ loved us.

Este jueves de la quinta semana de Pascua, la iglesia celebra la fiesta de San Mattias. Originalmente, no era uno de los doce Apóstoles. Sin embargo, fue elegido para reemplazar a Judas Iscariote.

No se sabe mucho sobre San Matías. Sin embargo, la buena noticia es que, como el resto de los Apóstoles, permaneció fiel hasta el final de su día. Permaneció en el amor de Cristo hasta el final.

En el evangelio de hoy, Cristo nos dio otra clave para una vida feliz. Esta clave es, permanecer en su amor. Jesús mismo permaneció en el amor del Padre observando los mandamientos que él recibió de su padre.

Por supuesto, permanecer en el amor de Cristo, también significa amar a los demás. Así fue, como Cristo expresó su amor por la humanidad. Por lo tanto, él nos lo da como un nuevo mandamiento, “amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado.”

Al celebrar hoy la fiesta de uno de los Apóstoles (Matías), su fiesta nos recuerda que, los Apóstoles sacrificaron su vida por su amor a Dios, y a los demás.

Lo demostraron con su propia sangre. Así que, a través de su gran sacrificio, Matías y sus compañeros cumplieron estas palabras de Cristo: ” Nadie tiene amor más grande a sus amigos, que el que da la vida por ellos.”

Sí, Cristo lo hizo primero como un gran signo de su amor por nosotros, y sus Apóstoles siguieron su ejemplo.

Así que pidamos a Dios que nos ayude a permanecer siempre en su amor, y que, también nos amemos unos a otros, como Cristo nos amó.

¡San Matías, ruega por nosotros! Alleluia, Alleluia!

Without me, you can do nothing!

Today is Wednesday of the fourth week of Easter. As Christ prepares to leave his disciple and return to the Father, he gives them the key and secret of survival.

This demonstrates how much he cares for them, and for their wellbeing. It also demonstrates how much he understood the tough times that awaits them after his departure. So, he is equipping them for the future.

First, he has promised them the Holy Spirit. Now he is reminding them of a truth he has repeated several times to them: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”

So, the secret to eternal life is remaining in Christ. The secret of success is also remaining in his church. The secret of conquering this dangerous time is, remaining firmly in Christ the true vine that comes from God, the Father.

Many of us have separated themselves from God, but have attached themselves firmly to this world. Instead of building their foundation on their Creator, they have built it on worldly things.

Jesus also leaves us with a warning of what seems to be the consequences of not remaining in him, as he remained in the Father. The consequence is twofold.

The first is that, whoever (the branch), that does not remain in him (the vine and source of life), will not bear fruit. This is because, it has no source of life, and therefore cannot survive on its own.

The second is that, any branch that does not bear fruit shall be pruned. Pruning is painful. However, it is necessary. It purifies the vine, and makes more viable branches to bear more fruits.

So, let ask God, to grant us the grace to remain firm in Christ our vine, so that we may bear good and abundant fruits that will last. Alleluia, Alleluia!

¡Sin mí, nada pueden hacer!

Hoy es miércoles de la cuarta semana de Pascua. Mientras Cristo se prepara para dejar a su discípulo, y regresar al Padre, él les da la clave y el secreto de la supervivencia.

Esto demuestra cuánto se preocupa por ellos y por su bienestar. También, demuestra lo mucho que entendió los tiempos difíciles que les esperan después de su partida. Así que, los está equipando para el futuro.

Primero, les ha prometido el Espíritu Santo. Ahora les está recordando una verdad que les ha repetido varias veces: “Yo soy la vid, ustedes los sarmientos; el que permanece en mí y yo en él, ése da fruto abundante, porque, sin mí, nada pueden hacer.”

El secreto de la vida eterna es, permanecer en Cristo. El secreto del éxito ye de conquistar este tiempo peligroso es permanecer firmemente en Cristo, la verdadera vid.

Por desgracia, muchos de nosotros se han separado de Dios, pero se han adherido firmemente a este mundo. En lugar de construir su fundamento en su Creador, lo han construido sobre las cosas mundanas.

También, Jesús nos deja con una advertencia de la consecuencia de no permanecer en él, como él permaneció en el Padre. Son dos.

Primera, el que no permanece en él, no dará fruto. Esto es porque, no tiene ninguna fuente de vida y, por lo tanto, no puede sobrevivir. Segunda el que no dé fruto, será podada. La poda es dolorosa. Sin embargo, es necesaria. para purificar la vid, y para que, las ramas más viables pueden dar más frutos.

Así que, pidamos a Dios que nos conceda la gracia de permanecer firmes en Cristo, para que podamos dar frutos buenos y abundantes, frutos que durarán. Alleluia, Alleluia!
