The Parable of the Sower

Today is the Friday of the sixteenth week of ordinary time. In today’s gospel, Jesus explained the parable of the sower to his disciples.

If we sincerely examine ourselves in light of today’s parable, we will convincingly find our place within it.

The spreading of the seeds everywhere without considering the nature of the soil, and where they will fall simply, reflects the universality of salvation.

It is a sign that “God has no favorite. He wants everyone to hear the good news and be saved through its proclamation (Acts 10:34).

One point is clear from today’s gospel. The word of God is a viable seed. In other words, the problem is not with the seed. Rather, it is always with the receiver. That is, one’s attitude towards the word of God.

Unfortunately, for some of us, God’s word has lost its significance. It has become an old-fashioned story repeated for ages.

For others, it is an obstacle as Paul said: “We proclaim Christ crucified a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles” (1 Cor 1:23). Glory be to God that for many, it is still alive and new.

The way we receive, and treat the word of God determines who we are, and what it achieves in us. It is not meant to be received and quarantined.

Rather, it is meant to be lived. It is not meant to be passive in us. Rather, it is meant to nourish and become one with us, just as food forms flesh and becomes one with our mortal bodies.

It is supposed to shape our personality. That is, the way we live, speak, walk, and relate with others. So, as it was one with God in the beginning (Jn 1:1-4), so, it is meant to become one with us today and always.

Finally, the word of God shapes our faith.  So, our faith and life depend on it. Hence, Paul reminds us that: “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.” (Rom 10:10 -17). 

May God help us to grow and mature in our faith, through His life-giving seed, the word sown in our hearts every day.

Hoy es el viernes de la decimosexta semana del tiempo ordinario. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús explica la parábola del sembrador a sus discípulos.

Si nos examinamos sinceramente a la luz de la parábola de hoy, encontraremos de manera convincente nuestro lugar en ella.

La difusión de las semillas por todas partes sin considerar la naturaleza del terreno, y donde caerán simplemente, refleja la universalidad de la salvación.

Es una señal de que, “Dios no tiene favorito. Quiere que todos escuchar la buena noticia y se salvan a través de su proclamación” (Hechos 10:34).

Un punto está claro del evangelio de hoy. La palabra de Dios es una semilla viable. En otras palabras, el problema no está con la semilla. Más bien, siempre esta con el receptor. Es decir, la actitud de uno hacia la palabra de Dios.

Por desgracia, para algunos de nosotros, la palabra de Dios ha perdido su significado. Se ha convertido en una historia anticuada repetida durante siglos.

Para otros, es un obstáculo como dijo Pablo: “Proclamamos a Cristo crucificado un obstáculo para los judíos y la tontería para los gentiles” (1 Co 1:23). Gloria sea a Dios que, todavia para muchos está viva y nueva.

La forma en que recibimos y tratamos la palabra de Dios determina quiénes somos, y lo que logra en nosotros. No está destinada a ser recibida y puesto en cuarentena.

Más bien, está destinada a ser vivido. No está destinada a ser pasivo en nosotros. Más bien, está destinada a nutrir y a ser uno con nosotros, así como los alimentos forman carne y se convierten en uno con nuestro cuerpo mortal.

Se supone que da forma a nuestra personalidad. Es decir, la forma en que vivimos, hablamos, caminamos y nos relacionamos con los demás. Como fue uno con Dios al principio (Jn 1:1-4), así, está destinada a ser uno con nosotros hoy, y siempre.

Finalmente, la palabra de Dios forma nuestra fe. Así que, nuestra fe y nuestra vida dependen de ella. Por lo tanto, Pablo dice: “La fe viene de oir el mensaje, y el mensaje es oído a través de la Palabra de Cristo”. (Rom 10:10 -17).

Que Dios nos ayude a crecer y madurar en nuestra fe, a través de su semilla que da vida, la palabra sembrada en nuestros corazones todos los días.

Hoy es el jueves de la decimosexta semana del tiempo ordinario. En el Evangelio de hoy, asombrado por el método de enseñanza de su maestro, los discípulos de Cristo le hicieron una pregunta muy importante.

Según Carl Sagan: “Hay preguntas ingenuas, preguntas tediosas, preguntas mal redactadas y preguntas formuladas después de una autocrítica inadecuada. Cada pregunta es un grito para entender el mundo. No hay tal cosa como una pregunta tonta” (The demon-haunted World: Science as a candle in the dark, Ballantine Books, 1997).

Una de las mejores maneras de aprender es hacer preguntas. Un estudiante que es demasiado tímido, temeroso u orgulloso de hacer preguntas puede no aprender mucho de su maestro. A través de ella, se obtienen aclaraciones y más perspectivas sobre un tema en particular.

Por lo tanto, un proverbio igbo muy popular dice: “Onye ajuju anaghi efu uzo.” Esto significa que: “Aquel que hace preguntas nunca se pierde el camino.”

En muchas ocasiones los discípulos de Cristo le hicieron preguntas diferentes sobre temas importantes (Mc 13:3-4; Lc 21:7; Jn 12:34; Hechos 1:6-7).

Así que, el evangelio de hoy nos habla del discurso sobre las parábolas. Después de usar muchas parábolas para enseñar acerca del reino de Dios, los discípulos de Cristo le preguntaron: “¿Por qué les hablas en parábolas?”

Una parábola puede desempeñar dos papeles al mismo tiempo. Puede revelar y ocultar información. Sin embargo, esto depende de, a quién se le habla. Aquellos que lo conocen comprenden su mensaje inmediatamente.

Por otro lado, deja a aquellos que no lo conocen en la oscuridad mientras se preguntan lo que significa. Así que, para estos, las parábolas esconden un mensaje importante a menos que finalmente esta desbloqueado para ellos.

La respuesta de Jesús a la pregunta de sus discípulos simplemente nos recuerda que él utiliza parábolas porque revela sus mensajes a aquellos que realmente han aceptado y creído en él como el Mesías.

Por lo tanto, al pasar más tiempo con Cristo, explica el significado de las parábolas a sus discípulos y a través de ellas revela los secretos del reino. Por lo tanto, cuanto más cerca estamos de Cristo, más se deleita con nosotros. Además, nos familiarizamos más con los secretos del reino de Dios.

Oremos con Pablo para que “el Espíritu Santo siempre ilumine los ojos de nuestro corazón” (Ef 1:18), para que podamos comprender plenamente lo que Dios siempre trata de revelarnos en nuestro encuentro diario con él.

Blessed are your eyes, because they see

Today is the Thursday of the sixteenth week of ordinary time. In today’s gospel, amazed by their master’s method of teaching, the disciples of Christ asked him a very important question.

According to Carl Sagan: “There are naive questions, tedious questions, ill-phrased questions and questions put after inadequate self-criticism. Every question is a cry to understand the world. There is no such thing as a dumb question” (The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, Ballantine Books, 1997).

One of the best ways to learn is to ask questions. A student who is too shy, afraid or proud to ask questions may not learn much from his teacher. Through questions, one gets clarifications and more insights on a particular issue.

Hence one very popular Igbo proverb says: “Onye ajuju anaghi efu uzo.” This simply means, that: “One who asks questions never misses his or her way.”

On many occasions the disciples of Christ asked him different questions on important issues (Mk 13:3-4; Lk 21:7; Jn 12:34; Acts 1:6-7).

So, today’s gospel speaks to us about the discourse on the parables. After using many parables to teach about the kingdom of God, the disciples of Christ were courageous enough to ask him: “Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?

A parable can play two roles at the same time. It can reveal and hide information. However, this depends on who it is spoken to. Those who are acquainted with it comprehend its message immediately.

On the other hand, it leaves those who are not acquainted with it in the dark while wondering what it means.  So, for these, parables hide an important message unless it is eventually unlocked for them.

Hence, Christ’s response to the question of his disciples simply reminds us that he uses parables because it reveals his messages to those who have truly accepted and believed in him as the messiah.

Therefore, by spending extra time with Christ, he explains the meaning of the parables to his disciples and through them, he reveals the secrets of the kingdom to them. Hence, the closer we are to Christ, the more he revels himself to us. Also, we become more acquainted with the secrets of God’s kingdom.

Let us pray with Paul that, “the Holy Spirit may always enlighten the eyes of our hearts” (Eph 1:18), so that, we may fully understand what God always tries to reveal to us in our daily encounters with him.

Saint Mary Magdalene, pray for us

Today, the Wednesday of the sixteenth week of ordinary time, the Church honors one of her greatest saints, Mary Magdalene.

The fact that the church elevated today’s celebration to the level of a feast, speaks volume about the greatness, and significant role of Mary Magdalene as a great model for all of us on our journey of faith.

Today’s gospel recounts the interesting episode of the post resurrection encounter of Mary Magdalene with the glorified Christ.

According John the Evangelist, after his resurrection, Christ revealed himself first, to Mary Magdalene before another person. So, she was the first person to see, to talk with, and to touch the body of the glorified Christ.

Through this divine encounter, Mary Magdalene received a direct mission from Christ: “Go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”  

Hence, she was equipped with a first-class good news, and in deed, accomplished her mission by doing exactly what she was instructed to do.

The story of Mary Magdalene reminds us of how one can be transformed from a vicious to a virtuous person. It reminds us of how merciful and gracious our God can be to those who sincerely love him.

She is a super model of the transition from a sinful to a saintly life. She teaches us that, no matter how notoriously sinful we have been, that there is hope, if only we are ready to submit our lives entirely to God.

Mary Magdalene is also, an example of how a true and sincere conversion can lead to intimacy with God, and consequently, how this intimacy with Christ could be a very rich source of much favor and love.

So, as we celebrate her feast today, let us ask Saint Mary Magdalene to intercede for us, as we struggle with the ups and downs of everyday life on our faith journey.

Santa María Magdalena, ruega por nosotros

Hoy, el miércoles de la decimosexta semana de tiempo ordinario, la iglesia honra a una de sus mayores santos, María Magdalena.

El hecho de que la iglesia elevó la celebración de hoy al nivel de una fiesta, habla en volumen sobre la grandeza, y el papel significativo de María Magdalena como una gran modelo para todos nosotros en nuestro viaje de la fe.

El evangelio de hoy relata el interesante episodio del encuentro post resurrección de María Magdalena con el Cristo glorificado.

Según Juan el Evangelista, después de su resurrección, Cristo se reveló primero a María Magdalena ante otra persona. Entonces, ella fue la primera persona en ver, hablar y tocar el cuerpo del Cristo glorificado.

A través de este encuentro divino, María Magdalena recibió una misión directa de Cristo: “Ve a decir a mis hermanos: ‘Subo a mi Padre y su Padre, a mi Dios y su Dios’”.

Por lo tanto, estaba equipada con una buena noticia de primera clase, y cumplió su misión haciendo exactamente lo que se le instruyó que hiciera.

La historia de María Magdalena nos recuerda cómo uno puede ser transformado de una persona viciosa a una persona virtuosa. Nos recuerda lo misericordioso y gracioso que puede ser nuestro Dios con aquellos que lo aman sinceramente.

María Magdalena es una super modelo de la transición de una vida pecaminosa a una vida Santa. Ella nos enseña que, no importa cuán notoriamente pecaminosos hayamos sido, que hay esperanza, si solo estamos listos para entregar nuestras vidas completamente a Dios.

María Magdalena es también un ejemplo de cómo una conversión verdadera y sincera puede llevar a la intimidad con Dios, y, por consiguiente, cómo esta intimidad con Cristo podría ser una muy rica fuente de mucho favor y amor.

Así que, al celebrar hoy su fiesta, pidamos a Santa María Magdalena que interceda por nosotros, mientras luchamos con los altibajos de la vida cotidiana en nuestro camino de la fe.

The Family of Christ and its Fundamental Requirement

Today, the Tuesday of the sixteenth week of ordinary time, Christ reminds us that the fundamental requirement for being part of his family is, doing the will of his Father.

When Christ was told that his Mother and relatives were looking for him, he responded: “Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

To some, Christ’s response could easily be misinterpreted. Someone might say that Christ disrespected or dishonored his family.

For others, this supports their claim, and forms the basis for denying the important role that Mary played in the history of our salvation.

However, what Christ simply did was to extend his family. Through this, he created a bigger community. So, he means that, doing the will of God, is a fundamental requirement for being part of his great family.

Also, through this Christ reminds us of the nature of his family. First, it is biological. That is, he is truly the Son of Mary and has relatives. Second, his other family is made up of those who do the will of God. 

Mary and his relatives belong to both families. It suffices to note that Mary was the first to do the will of God when she preeminently said: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38).

For this reason, she is the first disciple of Christ, and the model for all Christians on how to accept and do the will of God.

Therefore, what makes us members of God’s family is our ability to do his will, and not just our nominal membership of a particular congregation.

Christ continues to invite us day after day, and time after time to share in this true intimacy which unites us with him, and with one another in one big family of God.

So, let us pray that the Holy Spirit may help us to always do the will of God, so that that we may continue to enjoy the membership of this great family, where Christ himself is the head.

La Familia de Cristo y su Requisito Fundamental

Hoy, martes de la decimosexta semana de tiempo ordinario, Cristo nos recuerda que el requisito fundamental para formar parte de su familia es hacer la voluntad de su Padre.

Cuando le dijeron a Cristo que su Madre y parientes le buscaban, el respondió: “Todo el que cumple la voluntad de mi Padre, que está en los cielos, ése es mi hermano, mi hermana y mi madre.”

Para algunos, la respuesta de Cristo podría ser fácilmente malinterpretada. Alguien podría decir que Cristo faltó respeto o deshonró a su familia.

Para otros, esto apoya su afirmación, y constituye la base para negar el importante papel que María desempeñó en la historia de nuestra salvación.

Sin embargo, lo que Cristo simplemente hizo fue extender su familia. A través de esto, creó una comunidad más grande. Por lo tanto, él quiere decir que, hacer la voluntad de Dios es un requisito fundamental para ser parte de su gran familia.

También, a través de esto, Cristo nos recuerda la naturaleza de su familia. Primero, es biológica. Es decir, él es el verdaderamente Hijo de María, y tiene parientes. Segundo, su otra familia está compuesta por aquellos que hacen la voluntad de Dios.

María y sus parientes pertenecen a ambas familias. Basta señalar que María fue la primera en hacer la voluntad de Dios cuando dijo preeminentemente: “Yo soy la esclava del Señor, hágase conmigo según tu voluntad” (Lc1:38).

Por esta razón, ella es la primera discípula de Jesús y el modelo para todos los cristianos, de cómo aceptar, y hacer la voluntad de Dios.

Lo que nos hace miembros de la familia de Dios es nuestra capacidad para hacer su voluntad, y no sólo nuestra membresía nominal de una Congregación en particular.

Cristo sigue invitándonos día tras día, y tiempo tras tiempo a compartir esta verdadera intimidad que nos une con él, y con los demás en una gran familia de Dios.

Así que, oremos para que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a hacer la voluntad de Dios, Siempre, para que podamos seguir disfrutando de la membresía de esta gran familia, donde Cristo mismo reina como cabeza.
