El Espíritu Santo condenará al mundo

Hoy es martes de la quinta semana de Pascua. La lectura del Evangelio de hoy es muy breve. Sin embargo, es muy revelador y alentador.

Esto es especialmente, para todos los verdaderos, y fieles discípulos de Cristo, que esperan pacientemente el cumplimiento de la promesa de su Señor y Salvador.

En los días pasados, Cristo ha seguido reiterando su promesa de enviarnos el Espíritu Santo. También, nos ha revelado algunas de las funciones, y obras que el Espíritu Santo realizará. Él será el abogado, el consejero y nuestra ayudante.

Hoy, Cristo va más allá, a revelarnos otra función y misión muy importante del Espíritu Santo: “Cuando venga, condenará al mundo en cuanto al pecado, la rectitud y la condenación.”

El Paráclito es el acusador en un proceso que se lleva a cabo ante Dios. El acusado es el mundo, que se ha hecho culpable por condenar a Cristo.

¡Esta es una misión seria! ¿Qué quiere decir Cristo, por el mundo? Se refiere a la gente. El Espíritu Santo acusará, juzgará y condenará a aquellos que, a pesar de escuchar la buena nueva, se negaron a creer en Cristo.

La buena noticia es que, esta acusación, juicio y convicción no es para los verdaderos creyentes. Pablo nos dice: “Ahora, ya no hay condenación para los que están en Cristo Jesús, porque por medio de Cristo Jesús, la ley del Espíritu que da vida, los ha liberado de la ley del pecado y de la muerte” (Ro 8:1-2).

Así que, mientras esperamos el cumplimiento de esta promesa, pidamos a Cristo que nos mantenga fieles, hasta que venga el Espíritu Santo.

The Holy Spirit will convict the world

Today is Tuesday of the fifth week of Easter. Today’s gospel reading is very brief. However, it is very revealing and encouraging.  

This is especially, for all true and faithful disciples of Christ, who patiently, are waiting for the fulfillment of the promise of their Lord and Savior.

In the past days, Christ has continued to reiterate his promise to send us the Holy Spirit. He has also told us some of the functions, and the works that the Holy Spirit will realize. He will be the Advocate, the Counselor, and our helper.

Today, Christ goes further to reveal to us another very important function and mission of the Holy Spirit: “When he comes, he will convict the world in regard to sin, righteousness and condemnation.”

the Paraclete is the accuser in a process that is carried out before God. The accused is the world, which has made itself guilty for condemning Christ.

This is a serious mission! What does Christ mean by the world? He means people. The Holy Spirit will accuse, judge and convict those who, in spite of hearing the good news, refused to believe in Christ.

The good news is that, this accusation, judgement and conviction is not for true believers. Paul tells us: “There is now, no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (Rom 8:1-2).

So, as we wait for the fulfillment of this promise, let us ask Christ to keep us faithful until the Holy Spirit comes. Alleluia, alleluia!

The Holy Spirit will bear testimony to the Truth

Today is Monday of the Sixth week of Easter. In today’s Gospel according to John, Jesus continues to advice and encourage his disciples.

Jesus taught his disciples with his word, and prepared them for life when he would no longer be with them. He knew that, there would be opposition, and that their lives will be in danger for being his disciples.

So, he continues to reaffirm his promise to send them the Holy Spirit, the “Advocate” who will help the after he has gone. The Holy Spirit will affirm the life and love of Christ. Also, the Holy Spirit will give witness to what is true.

As his disciples, Jesus is also telling us these things so that, our faith may not be shaken. When the Holy Spirit comes, he will strengthen our conviction, and keep us secure and at peace.

Christ also reassures us that, the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who comes from the Father, will support us in giving this witness to the Good News. This will be despite challenges we are to face.

Of course, we are to be witnesses of Christ. However, this will not be only through words, but through our actions, and good works. According to saint Francis of Assisi, we are to preach the good news always through our lives and, only occasionally in words.

So, let us keep our heart and mind open, in order to receive this wonderful gift that Christ is ready to give us soon.

Finally, let us pray that Christ may keep us faithful until he fulfills is promise to us.

El Espíritu Santo dará testimonio de la Verdad

Hoy es lunes de la sexta semana de Pascua. En el Evangelio de hoy según san Juan, Jesús sigue aconsejando y animando a sus discípulos.

Jesús enseñó a sus discípulos con su palabra, y los preparó para la vida cuando ya no estaría con ellos. Sabía que, habría oposición, y que sus vidas estarán en el peligro por ser sus discípulos.

Así que, él continúa reafirmando su promesa de enviarles el Espíritu Santo, el “Abogado” que les ayudará después de que él se haya ido. El Espíritu Santo afirmará la vida, y el amor de Cristo. Además, el Espíritu Santo dará testimonio de lo que es verdad.

Como sus discípulos, Jesús también nos está diciendo que estas cosas, para que, nuestra fe no sea sacudida. Cuando el Espíritu Santo venga, él fortalecerá nuestra convicción, y nos mantendrá seguros y en paz.

También, Cristo nos asegura que el Espíritu Santo, el Consolador, que viene del Padre, nos apoyará en dar testimonio a la buena nueva. Esto será, a pesar de los desafíos que enfrentaremos.

Por supuesto, seremos testigos de Cristo. Sin embargo, esto no será solo a través de las palabras, sino a través de nuestras acciones, y buenas obras. Según san Francisco de Asís, debemos predicar la buena nueva siempre con nuestra vida y, solo ocasionalmente, con palabras.

Así que, mantengamos nuestro corazón y nuestra mente abiertos, para recibir este maravilloso don que Cristo está dispuesto a darnos pronto.

Finalmente, oremos para que Cristo nos mantenga fieles hasta que cumpla su promesa para nosotros. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Yo los he separado del mundo

Este sábado de la quinta semana de Pascua, la lectura del Evangelio es muy breve. Sin embargo, tiene un mensaje muy importante para nosotros.

Hoy, Cristo sigue preparando a sus discípulos para el futuro. Una vez más, les recordó el hecho de que la vida no iba a ser fácil.

Se enfrentarán tiempos difíciles. Serán perseguidos como Cristo fue perseguido. Por lo tanto, les advierte: “Si el mundo los odia, sepan que me ha odiado a mí antes que a ustedes. Si fueran del mundo, el mundo los amaría como cosa suya.”

Como seguidores de Cristo, estamos llamados a vivir de una manera contraria a la sociedad. Así que, en un mundo organizado según los intereses egoístas, los cristianos deben vivir e irradiar amor, paz y justicia.

Fue nuestra elección de Cristo, que nos hace diferentes. Así que, si permanecemos enfocados en su vocación, tendremos la fuerza para conquistar dificultades. También, estaremos alegres a pesar de las dificultades que esta vida, y mundo nos presentarán.

Es nuestra cercanía a Cristo que nos da la fuerza para continuar nuestro camino. También, esta cercanía fue la fuente de la experiencia mística de muchos santos y mártires que vencieron este mundo.

Ellos conquistaron este mundo por medio de su amor por Cristo y la vida eterna. Vivían, sabiendo que podían ser perseguidos, acusados, encarcelados y asesinados en cualquier momento. Sin embargo, sabían también, que, siempre Dios estaba con ellos.

Oremos para que nuestra elección y amor por Cristo, y por la vida eterna, nos sostenga todos los momentos de nuestra vida. Oremos también que, a pesar de todas las dificultades, podamos permanecer firmes y fieles en la misión de Cristo. Alleluia, Alleluia!

I have chosen you out of the world

On this Saturday of the fifth week of Easter, the Gospel reading is very brief. However, it has a very important message for us.

Today, Christ continues to prepare his disciples for the future. Once again, he reminded them of the fact that life was not going to be easy.

They will encounter hard times. They will be persecuted as he was persecuted. Hence, he warns them: “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own.”

As followers of Christ, we are called to live in a way that is contrary to society. In a world organized according to the egoistic interests, Christians must live and radiate love, peace and justice.

It was our choice of Christ that make us different. So, if we remain focused on his vocation, we will have the strength to conquer difficulties. Also, we shall be joyful in spite of the difficulties.

Therefore, it is our closeness to Christ that gives us the strength to continue our journey. This closeness was also, the source of the mystical experience for many saints and martyrs who overcame this world.

They conquered this world through their love for Christ and eternal life. They lived, knowing that they could be persecuted, accused, imprisoned and killed at any moment. However, they also knew that God was always with them.

Let us pray that our choice and love for Christ, and for eternal life may sustain us at all the moments of our life. Let us also pray that, in spite of all difficulties we might remain firm and faithful in the mission of Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Spirit of Christ Confirms Us

Today is the sixth Sunday of Easter. As we approach the feast of Pentecost, the Church invites us to celebrate the coming of the Advocate. She calls us to celebrate the Spirit of truth who strengthens us in the proclamation of the good news. The message we bear is not false, rather, it comes from the Advocate.

Our first reading is a continuation of the frantic efforts the disciples of Christ are making in order to bear testimony to the risen Lord. Through their efforts, the Samaritans received their Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. On this day, Peter performed his episcopal function by laying hands upon the new converts.

The Samaritans needed the Holy Spirit as much as we do today because, it is the Holy Spirit that strengthens and makes one a true soldier of Christ (CCC 1303-4). He helps us to bear witness to the truth without fear: “You have not received the Spirit of timidity, but the Spirit of sonship.

The Spirit bears witness that we are God’s Children” (Rom 8:15-16). It is this same Spirit that resurrected Christ, that gives life to our mortal body (Rom 8: 11). As the principal agent of evangelization, He confirms the truth we preach.

As we are a couple of weeks away from Pentecost, in today’s gospel, Jesus promises us the Holy Spirit, the Advocate. However, He gives a condition for receiving the Advocate: “If you love me you will keep my commandments.” When we do this, he adds: “I shall ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever, that spirit of truth…I will not leave you orphans.”

What is this commandment that we must keep in order to receive the Spirit of truth? It is: “Go into the whole world and preach the good news to all creation (Mk 16: 15). It is also, a command to love both God, and our neighbor (Luke 10, 25-27).

When we do this, we are certainly preaching the good news of truth. The advocate will come to strengthens us in the way of truth. He will also come to confirm that in deeded, we are sons of God. So, let us pray: Come, O Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Alleluia, Alleluia!

El Espiritu de Cristo nos Confirma

Hoy es el sexto domingo de Pascua. Al acercarse la fiesta de Pentecostés, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar la llegada del abogado. Ella nos llama a celebrar el espíritu de la verdad que nos fortalece en la proclamación de la buena noticia. El mensaje que llevamos no es falso, más bien, proviene del abogado.

La primera lectura es una continuación de los sinceros esfuerzos de los discípulos de Cristo a dar testimonio al Señor resucitado. A través de sus esfuerzos, los Samaritanos recibieron sus sacramentos de bautismo y confirmación. En este día, Pedro realiza su función episcopal por imponer las manos sobre los nuevos conversos.

Los Samaritanos necesitan el Espíritu Santo tanto como lo necesitamos hoy, porque, es el Espíritu Santo que fortalece y hace a uno un verdadero soldado de Cristo (CIC1303-5). Él nos ayuda a dar testimonio de la verdad sin temor: “No han recibido el espíritu de timidez, sino el espíritu de la filiación.”

El espíritu testimonia que somos hijos de Dios (Ro 8:15-16). Es, este mismo espíritu que resucitó a Cristo, que da vida a nuestro cuerpo mortal (Ro 8:11). Como el principal agente de evangelización, se confirma la verdad que predicamos.

Como hace falta un par de semanas de Pentecostés, en el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos promete el Espíritu Santo, el defensor. Sin embargo, se da una condición para recibir el Espiritu Santo, nuestro abogado: “Si me aman guardaran mis mandamientos.” Cuando hacemos esto, Cristo añade: “voy a pedir al padre y les dará otro abogado que estará con ustedes para siempre, ese espíritu de la verdad. Yo no les dejaré a huérfanos.”

¿Qué es este mandamiento que debemos tener para recibir el espíritu de verdad? Es: “vayan al todo mundo y predican la buena nueva a toda la creación (Mc 16:15). Además, es, cumplir el mandamiento de amar a Dios y a nuestro prójimo (Lucas 10:25-27).

Cuando hacemos esto, sin duda estamos predicando la buena noticia de verdad. El abogado llega y nos fortalece en el camino de verdad. También él vendrá a confirmar que, de verdad, somos hijos de Dios. Por lo tanto, oremos: Ven, Espíritu Santo, y renueva la faz de la tierra. Alleluia, Alleluia!
