¡Vayan, prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura!

Hoy, el sábado Marca la sexta octava de Pascua. Una de las características principales del evangelio según Marcos es su brevedad. Es decir, su capacidad para resumir los acontecimientos. Esto es exactamente lo que vemos en su relato de las apariciones de Cristo a sus discípulos.

Aquí, Marcos resume todas las apariciones que hemos visto hasta ahora: Mt 28:8-15, Lc 24:13-35; 36-48, y Jn 20:11-18; 21:1-31. La brevedad del relato de Marcos es una de las razones por las que los eruditos sugieren que otros escritores del evangelio copiaron de él, y probablemente embellecieron las historias.

Aunque el evangelio de Marcos es ampliamente aceptado como la primera, sin embargo, su última posición en los relatos de aparición en la octava de Pascua es estratégica por la Iglesia. Es un resumen, y los resúmenes se vean al final.

Sea lo que sea el caso, el enfoque principal del Evangelio de hoy es la presentación de las apariciones de Cristo a sus discípulos. Al igual que en los otros relatos que hemos visto esta semana, Marcos resumió los dos objetivos importantes de estas apariciones.

Primero, “se les apareció y les reprendió por su incredulidad y dureza de corazón”. Marcos generalmente presenta a Cristo como alguien que tiene, habla, y actúa con autoridad. Con autoridad, habló y reprendió a los demonios.

Por lo tanto, no es una sorpresa que Marcos dijo que “los reprendió.” Esto es probablemente, para capturar la idea de “expulsar” el espíritu (de la incredulidad y el miedo), que es predominante en su evangelio. En palabras del orden, la aparición fue para despertar o reavivar su fe.

El segundo objetivo de estas apariciones es que Cristo vino para entregarlos su misión: ” Vayan por todo el mundo, y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura.” Así que, después de estas apariciones, fueron energizados y transformados de discípulos tímidos, a los apóstoles valientes.

Que nuestro encuentro con Cristo resucitado esta pascua nos transforme y fortalezca para su misión. Y, que nos quita de todo miedo y duda.

Today, Saturday marks the sixth octave of Easter. One of the characteristics of the gospel according to mark is its brevity. That is, its ability to summarize events. This is exactly what we see in his account of the apparitions of Christ to his disciples.

Here, Mark summarizes all the various apparitions we have seen so far from: Mt 28:8-15, Lk 24:13-35; 36-48, and Jn 20:11-18; 21:1-31. The brevity of Mark’s account is one of the reasons scholars suggest that other gospel writers copied from him, and probably embellished the stories.

Although Mark’s gospel is widely accepted by biblical as the first, however, it’s last position in the apparition accounts in the octave of Easter is strategic one by the Church. It is a summary, and summaries come at the end.

Whatever the case, the main focus of today’s gospel is the presentation of the apparitions of Christ to his disciples. Like in the other accounts we have seen this week, Mark summarized the two important objectives of these apparitions.

First, “he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart.” Mark generally presents Christ as one who has, speaks, and acts with authority. With authority, he spoke and rebuked demons.

So, it is no surprise that Mark said that he “rebuked” them, probably, to portray the idea of “casting out” the spirit (of unbelief and fear), which is predominant in his gospel. In order words, the apparition was to awaken or rekindle their faith.

The second objective of these apparitions is that, Christ came to commission them for his mission: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” So, after these apparitions, they were energized and transformed from timid disciples, to brave Apostles.

May, our encounter with the risen Christ this season transform us and strengthen for his mission. May it cast away all fears and doubt in us. Alleluia, Alleluia!

En esta quinta octava de Pascua, Cristo continúa apareciendo a sus discípulos. En la aparición del evangelio de hoy según Juan, algo espectacular sucedió.

Esto no debe sorprender a ninguno de nosotros, porque, como ya hemos visto, los discípulos de Cristo todavía están luchando con la realidad de su situación. Algunos de ellos han perdido la esperanza que tenían en su “Mesías” después de verlo crucificado por los judíos.

Entonces, ¿qué les quedó? Nada, sino volver a su profesión anterior para reconstruir su vida, ya que su visión y esperanza ha sido destrozada. Por supuesto, actuaron como la mayoría de nosotros habría actuado en la misma situación.

En el episodio de aparición de hoy, lo más sorprendente es esto. Pedro, el líder y el jefe de los Apóstoles, fue el que animó a los demás a abandonar su misión como “pescadores de hombres”, para volver a su profesión anterior de capturar peces.

Por supuesto, aunque eran pescadores profesionales, trabajaron en vano toda la noche. Esto es porque, ese ya no era su lugar. Ya habían hecho un voto solemne para ser pescadores de hombres (Mt 4:19).

Por lo tanto, esta aparición tiene algunas lecciones para todos nosotros. Primera, fue un recordatorio de que estaban en el lugar equivocado, y han abandonado su misión. Segunda, fue un recordatorio de la palabra de Cristo que, “separado de mí, no pueden hacer nada” (Jn 15, 15). Tercera, fue para demostrarles que, de verdad, se ha resucitado. Les demostró esto, tanto a través de la cantidad de peces que capturaron por su instrucción, como a través de la celebración de la Eucaristía.

Pidamos a Cristo que nos mantenga fieles a su misión a pesar de todos los desafíos y dificultades asociados a ella. Por último, oremos por todos los que, debido a las dificultades y persecuciones, están a punto de abandonar la misión de Dios. Para que encuentren una nueva esperanza y la fuerza para continuar. Alleluia, Alleluia!

On this fifth octave of Easter, Christ continues to appear to his disciples. In today’s apparition from the gospel according John something spectacular happened.

This should not surprise any of us, because, as we have already seen, the disciples of Christ are still struggling the reality of their situation. Some of them have lost the hope they had in their “Messiah” after seeing him crucified by the Jews.

So, what was left for them? Nothing, but to go back to their former profession in order to rebuild their lives since their vision and hope has been shattered. Of course, they acted as most of us would have acted in the same situation.

In today’s apparition episode, the most surprising thing is this. It was Peter, the leader and the chief of the Apostles that encouraged the others to abandon their mission as “fishers of men”, to return to their former profession of catching fish.

Of course, even though they were professional fishermen, they labored in vain the whole night. This is because, that was no longer their place. They had already made a solemn vow to be fishers of men (Mt 4:19).

So, this apparition has some lessons for all of us. First, it was a reminder that they were in the wrong place, and have abandoned their mission. Second, it was a reminder of Christ’s word that, “separated from me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:15). Third, it was to prove to them that, truly, he has risen. He proved this to them, both through the quantity of fish they caught, and through the celebration of the Eucharist.

Let us ask Christ to keep us faithful to his mission in spite of all the challenges and difficulties associated with it. Finally, let us pray for all who due to difficulties and persecutions, are about to abandon God’s mission. That they may find a new hope and the strength to continue. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Today is the fourth octave of Easter, Christ continues to appear to his disciples. Today’s apparition is special, and casts mucho light on the real situation of Christ’s disciples after his death and Resurrección.

Apart from the fear of the Jews, another problem the disciples of Christ had was their unbelief in the resurrection of Christ. So, their major problem was their own unbelief in the words, assurance, and power of Christ.

This shows that Christians are not naïve and credulous persons who accepted everything and anything. On the contrary, they themselves had many doubts about the Resurrection of Christ. So, there is no doubt that these apparitions of Christ, were efforts to restore their faith.

Christ was keen to reassure his disciples that he is not a ghost, but the same person, though in a new state. The strongest proof of this identity are his wounds. They are signs that, the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day’.

Also, they are signs that, repentance and the forgiveness of sins are to be proclaimed to all nations in the name of Christ. So, the apparitions of Christ in today’s Gospel puts two different aspects together. The first is, the doubts of his disciples. The second is, the mission they received from Christ.

This mission is to announce the good news. That is, to be witnesses to the Resurrection, so that, the love of God which forgave and saved us will save others. Also, it is a mission to announce the forgiveness of sins.

Let us pray with Pope Francis: “that the Lord may open our minds and make us understand that he is a living reality, that he has conquered, that he is with us, and that he accompanies us on our daily journey.” Also, let us ask him for the grace to accept our mission. Alleluia, Alleluia!

Hoy es la cuarta octava de Pascua. Cristo sigue apareciendo a sus discípulos. La aparición de hoy es especial, y brilla mucha luz sobre la situación real de los discípulos de Cristo después de su muerte y resurrección.

Aparte del temor de los judíos, otro problema que los discípulos de Cristo tenían era su incredulidad en la resurrección de Cristo. Así que, su problema principal era su propia incredulidad en las palabras, el aseguramiento y el poder de Cristo.

Esto demuestra que los cristianos no son personas ingenuas y crédulas que aceptaron todo y cualquier cosa. Por el contrario, ellos mismos tenían muchas dudas acerca de la resurrección de Cristo. Por lo tanto, no hay duda de que estas apariciones de Cristo, fueron esfuerzos para restaurar su fe.

Cristo estaba dispuesto a reasegurar a sus discípulos de que no es un fantasma, sino la misma persona, aunque en un nuevo estado. La prueba más fuerte de esta identidad son sus heridas. Son señales de que el Mesías debe sufrir y levantarse de entre los muertos al tercer día.

También, son señales de que el arrepentimiento y el perdón de pecados deben ser proclamados a todas las naciones en el nombre de Cristo. Así, la aparición de Cristo en el Evangelio de hoy pone juntos dos aspectos diferentes. La primera es, las dudas de sus discípulos. El segundo es la misión que recibieron de Cristo.

Esta misión es anunciar las buenas noticias. Es decir, ser testigos de la resurrección, para que el amor de Dios que nos perdonó, y nos salvó puede salvar a los demás. Además, es una misión de anunciar el perdón de los pecados.

Oremos con el Papa Francisco: “para que el Señor abra nuestras mentes y nos haga comprender que Cristo es una realidad viva, que ha conquistado, que está con nosotros y que nos acompaña en nuestro camino diario.” Además, le pidamos la gracia para aceptar nuestra misión de ser sus testigos.

In Emmaus, we recognized the Lord, Alleluia

On this third octave of Easter, Luke tells us of the apparition of Jesus to the disciples at Emmaus. This story teaches us how to interpret Scripture, in order to be able to rediscover the plan of God in our life.

Jesus met two of his disciples in a situation of fear, and lack of faith. The cross and the force of death had diminished their hope. It was a perilous time, because, the Jewish authorities were ready to destroy any evidence about Christ and his Resurrección. So, anyone associated with him, was in danger of being eliminated.

This is where the apparition of Christ becomes very important. Of course, the disciples knew what the prophets said, but they could not see that it has already been fulfilled. Christ knew that they were confused, and that fear has paralyzed their memory. He knew that they needed divine inspiration at this moment.

So, in order to help them, Christ used scripture and history to illuminate the problem which was difficult for them. He clarified the situation in which they were living. Then, he helped them to see the entire situation in the plan of God. Thus, Christ indicated that history is still in the hands of God.

Finally, he opened their spiritual eyes at the celebration of the Eucharist. Then, they recognized him.  How many of us have been paralyzed by fear of the future to the point that we are confused? How many of us recognize Christ in the Eucharist?

This Easter, let us pray that Jesus may come to our help in order to clear our confusion and calm our fear. Let us pray that he might teach and inspire us to see the hand and plan of God in our situation. Also, let us pray that we may always encounter and recognize Christ at every Eucharistic celebration.

En Emaús, reconocimos al Señor, Alleluia

En esta tercera octava de Pascua, Lucas nos habla de la aparición de Jesús a los discípulos de Emaús. Esta historia nos enseña cómo interpretar la Escritura, para poder redescubrir el plan de Dios en nuestra vida.

Jesús encontró a dos de sus discípulos en una situación de miedo, y falta de fe. La cruz, y la fuerza de la muerte habían disminuido su esperanza. Era un tiempo peligroso, porque, las autoridades judías estaban listos para destruir cualquier evidencia acerca de Cristo y su Resurrección. Entonces, cualquiera persona relacionada con Cristo estaba en peligro de ser eliminado.

Aquí es donde la aparición de Cristo se vuelve muy importante. Por supuesto, los discípulos sabían lo que los profetas decían, pero no podían ver que ya se había cumplido. Cristo sabía que estaban confundidos, y que el miedo ha paralizado su memoria. También, sabía que necesitaban inspiración divina en este momento.

Así que, para ayudarles, Cristo usó las Escrituras y la historia para iluminar el problema que era difícil para ellos. Aclaró la situación en que vivían. Entonces, él les ayudó a ver la situación entera en el plan de Dios. Así, Cristo indicó que la historia todavía está en manos de Dios.

Finalmente, le abrió los ojos durante la celebración de la Eucaristía. Entonces, lo reconocieron. ¿Cuántos de nosotros hemos quedado paralizados por el miedo al futuro hasta el punto de que estamos confundidos? ¿Cuántos de nosotros reconocemos a Cristo en la eucaristía?

Esta Pascua, oremos para que Jesús venga a nuestra ayuda para aclarar nuestra confusión y calmar nuestro miedo. Oremos para que él nos enseñe e inspire a ver la mano y el plan de Dios en nuestra situación. Oremos también, para que siempre encontremos y reconozcamos a Cristo en cada celebración eucarística.

Today is the second octave of Easter. The gospels continue to present the encounters of Christ with some of his disciples. Today’s Gospel specifically describes the apparition of Jesus to Mary Magdalene.

This apparition and encounter have a very important lesson for us today. The death of her great friend almost prompts Mary Magdalene to lose her sense of life. However, she does not give up her search.

Instead, she goes to the tomb in order to see the one whom death has taken away from her. Of course, her visit was not in vain. Instead, she was consoled, and had a very life transforming and divine encounter.

Here, there was a journey from despair and disappointment, to hope and perfect faith. Mary’s life was clouded by disappointment, grief, and unspeakable loss. But, the sound of Jesus’ voice gave her a new vision. She recognized Christ, and is filled with hope and joy.

There are moments in our life when everything seems to crumble. It seems that everything is finished. Sickness, death, disasters, suffering, despair, betrayals and many more of these could make life very miserable and hopeless. However, the truth is that at times, the Lord allows desolation, but He also provides consolation as we need it.

This is exactly what transpired in the encounter of Christ with Mary Magdalene. She did her part. Although she was heartbroken, but due to the extent of love she had for the Lord, she still summoned the courage to move out in search of Christ.

This Easter, let us pray that the Lord may increase our love for him, that we may always search for him. Let us pray also that our encounter with the resurrected Christ, may transform our life and situation, especially the situation of our world right now.

Hoy es la segunda octava de Pascua. Los evangelios siguen presentando los encuentros de Cristo con algunos de sus discípulos. El Evangelio de hoy describe específicamente la aparición de Jesús a María Magdalena.

Esta aparición y encuentro tienen una lección muy importante para nosotros hoy. La muerte de su gran amiga casi lleva a Mary Magdalena a perder su sentido de la vida. Sin embargo, ella no dejo su búsqueda.

En cambio, fue a la tumba para ver a quien la muerte le ha quitado. Por supuesto, su visita no fue en vano. En cambio, ella fue consolada, y tuvo un encuentro divino que transformó su vida.

Aquí, hubo un viaje de la desesperación y la desilusión, a la esperanza y a la fe perfecta. La vida de María Magdalena se vio nublada por la decepción, dolor y una pérdida indescriptible. Pero, el sonido de la voz de Jesús le dio una nueva visión. Ella reconoció a Cristo, y se llenó de esperanza y alegría.

Hay momentos en nuestra vida en que parece que no hay más esperanza, y que todo se acabó. La enfermedad, la muerte, los desastres, el sufrimiento, la desesperación, las traiciones y muchos más de estos podrían hacer la vida muy miserable y desesperanzada. Sin embargo, la verdad es que a veces, el Señor permite la desolación, pero también proporciona consuelo a medida que la necesitamos.

Esto es exactamente lo que sucedió en el encuentro de Cristo con María Magdalena. Ella hizo su parte. Aunque estaba desconsolada, pero debido a la magnitud del amor que tenía por el Señor, encontró el ánimo para macharse en busca de Cristo.

Esta Pascua, oremos para que el Señor aumente nuestro amor por él, y para que, siempre lo busquemos. También, oremos para que nuestro encuentro con Cristo resucitado, transforme nuestra vida y situación, especialmente, la situación de nuestro mundo en este momento.
