Ustedes son la sal de la tierra y la luz del mundo

Hoy es el lunes de la décima semana del tiempo ordinario. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús usó dos metáforas para recordarnos nuestro propósito y función en este mundo.

Primero, Cristo dice que somos “la sal de la tierra”. En el Antiguo Testamento el pueblo de Dios solía presentar sus ofrendas para el perdón de sus pecados con sal. Esto era un recordatorio de su alianza con Dios.

Además, los acuerdos fueron sellados con un regalo de sal. Esto fue para demostrar la fuerza y permanencia del dicho acuerdo.

Además, la sal era un símbolo de la actividad de Dios en la vida de su pueblo. La sal penetra, conserva y sanando. Esto es como Dios está siempre activo en nuestras vidas.

Además, Jesús dice que somos la luz del mundo. Como cristianos, debemos estar preparados para brillar en tinieblas. La luz no coexiste con la oscuridad.

Por lo tanto, como sal, debemos hacer una diferencia en este mundo en que vivimos. Debemos limpiar la decadencia moral en nuestra sociedad. Como sal de la tierra, debemos preservar la dulzura de nuestro mundo.

Cristo nos está recordando quiénes somos y cuál es nuestra función en nuestro mundo. Todo buen cristiano debe ser la luz y la sal de nuestro mundo.

Así que, pidamos a Cristo que nos ayude a cumplir nuestra función en nuestro mundo. Que, podamos ser verdaderos modelos para nuestro mundo que ha perdido su sabor y dulzura, y la luz para aquellos que viven en la oscuridad.

The Beatitudes and the secret of God’s kingdom

Today is Monday of the tenth week of ordinary time. Our gospel reading is from the gospel according to Matthew. It is from Jesus’ sermon on the mount called the Beatitudes.

The beatitudes is a summary of Jesus’s sermon on the mount about the qualities and attributes required for the kingdom of God. Therefore, it a call to holiness in order to merit the kingdom of God.

Often times, we a are faced with a very crucial question in our Christian journey. So, as Christians, the Beatitudes, are the marks of our identity. It helps us to answer the crucial question, What must I do to be a good Christian?

Hence, through the Beatitudes, Christ says to us, if you if you want to be a good Christian, and if you want to inherit the kingdom of God:

Be poor in spirit; be sober; be meek; work for righteousness; be merciful to others; be pure in your heart and in your thoughts, be peaceful to others; and persevere in moments of difficulty.

These may appear too much and difficult to achieve. However, they are vitues we must strive to live in our daily Christian life. Each day, we come face to face with different challenge of life , especially, on how to please God.

The beatitudes simply show and help us to know what is in the heart of Jesus, what he considered to be signs of God’s kingdom, and how we ought to live them daily.

Therefore, daily and constantly, we must ask God for the grace to dwell in his presence in other to  live the Beatitude, and to recognise where its happiness lies.

So, let us ask Christ to help us to always listen to him with our hearts, so that we may know how to please him, and in order to inherit the kingdom of God.

Las Bienaventuranzas y el secreto del reino de Dios

Hoy es el lunes de la décima semana del tiempo ordinario. Nuestra Segunda es del Evangelio según Mateo. Es del sermón de Jesús en el monte conocido como las Bienaventuranzas.

Las bienaventuranzas son un resumen del sermón de Jesús en el monte acerca de las cualidades y atributos requeridos para el reino de Dios. Por lo tanto, es una llamada a la santidad para merecer el reino de Dios.

A menudo, nos enfrentamos a una pregunta muy crucial en nuestro camino cristiano. Así, como cristianos, las Bienaventuranzas, son las marcas de nuestra identidady nos ayuda a responder a esta pregunta crucial: ¿Qué debo hacer para ser un buen cristiano?

Por lo tanto, a través de las Bienaventuranzas, Cristo nos dice, si quieres ser un buen cristiano, y si quieres heredar el reino de Dios:

Sé pobres en espíritu; sé sobrios; sé mansos; trabaja por la justicia; sé misericordiosos con los demás; sé puro en su corazón y en su pensamiento, sé pacífico con los demás; y persevera en momento de dificil.

Estos pueden parecer demasiado y difíciles de lograr. Sin embargo, como cristianos, son virtudes que debemos esforzarnos a vivir en nuestra vida cotidiana. Cada día, nos encontramos cara a cara con diferentes desafíos de la vida, especialmente, sobre cómo complacerle a Dios.

Las bienaventuranzas simplemente nos muestran y nos ayudan a saber lo que está en el corazón de Jesús, lo que él considera signos del reino de Dios, y cómo debemos vivirlos diariamente.

Por lo tanto, diariamente y constantemente, debemos pedirle a Dios la gracia de morar en su presencia a fin de vivir las Bienaventuranzas, y reconocer donde su felicidad está.

Así que, pidamos a Cristo que nos ayude a escucharlo siempre con nuestro corazón, para que sepamos agradarle, y para heredar el reino de Dios.

Humildad a través sacrificio y generosidad

Hoy es sábado de la novena semana de tiempo ordinario. En el evangelio de hoy según Marcos, después de su última crítica contra los escribas, Cristo instruye a sus discípulos.

Esta instrucción simplemente nos recuerda que no debemos seguir los ejemplos de los fariseos, más bien, debemos ser humildes y generosos.

Así que, usando el ejemplo de la pobre, pero generosa viuda Cristo nos enseña cómo debemos actuar en todo momento con humildad. En el gesto de esta pobre viuda, vemos la manifestación de la voluntad de Dios.

Así que, Cristo nos advierte que, en lugar de imitar el estilo de vida arrogante e hipócrita, o el ejemplo de los fariseos y escribas, siempre debemos vivir una vida muy sencilla y humilde.

El Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda también la importancia del sacrificio y la generosidad. Estas dos virtudes se van y funcionan juntas. Uno no puede ser generoso sin estar listo para hacer algún sacrificio.

La mujer dio lo más grande porque, generosamente dio todo lo que tenía. Esto es porque, ella confió en la providencia divina.

El resumen es que, Dios mira al corazón, y nuestra disposición para dar generosamente, y no necesariamente a la cantidad de lo que damos.

Así que, oremos para que el Señor nos dé un corazón humilde, simple y generoso, para que siempre vivamos de una manera que le agrade.

Humility through sacrifice and generosity

Today is Saturday of the ninth week of ordinary time. In today’s gospel according to Mark, after his last criticism against the Scribes, Christ instructs the disciples.

This instruction simply reminds us that we must not follow the examples of the Pharisees, rather, we should be humble and generous.

So, using the example of the poor, but generous widow Christ teaches us how we should act at all times with humility. In the gesture of this poor widow, we see the manifestation of the will of God.

So, Christ warns us that rather than imitates the arrogant and hypocritical life style or example to the Pharisees and scribes, we should always live a very simple and humble life.

Today’s Gospel also reminds us of the importance of sacrifice and generosity. These two virtues move and function together. One cannot be generous without being ready to make some sacrifice.

The woman gave the greatest because, she generously gave everything she had. This is because, she trusted in divine providence.

The summary is that, God looks at the heart and its readiness to give generously, and not necessarily at the quantity of what we give.

So, let us pray that the Lord will give us a humble, simple and generous heart, so, that we may always live in a way that is pleasing to him.

Saint Boniface, Pray for us!

Today, the church celebrates the memorial of saint Boniface, bishop and martyr. He was born in England. Saint Boniface belonged to the Benedictine Order. He was of the monastic apostolate in the Middle Ages.  

He worked in Germany, where he did a tremendous work of evangelization among the indigenes. Due to his great work and testimony, he earned the title: “Apostle of Germany.” Until today, he is honored as the father of the German Catholic faith.

In the midst of many difficulties and trials, Boniface remained a man of deep prayer, and exhibited a profound spiritual life which sustained him through moments of trials and difficulties in his mission.

In 754, and at the age of 74, Boniface was attacked and killed by a band of pagans when he was about to administer confirmation to a group of neophytes.

As we honor this great saint and pillar of the church today, in our first reading from his second letter to Timothy, Paul reminds us of a very important fact of our Christian life and journey: “In fact, all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”

This was the same path that Boniface walked until he met his death. It was not an easy journey. However, he remained faithful to Christ and his mission. As a faithful servant, he preached the good news both with words and action.

In our time, we too face much difficulties while trying to live religiously in Christ. It not an easy task, but Christ always comforts us through the power of his spirit.

So, let us ask God, to help us remain faithful to him as Saint Boniface did, even in the midst of much suffering that we experience today while trying to bear witness to the good news of Jesus Christ.

¡San Bonifacio, ruega por nosotros!

Hoy, la iglesia celebra el memorial de san Bonifacio, obispo y mártir. Nació en Inglaterra. San Bonifacio perteneció a la Orden Benedictina. Era del apostolado monástico en la Edad Media.

Trabajó en Alemania, donde realizó una tremenda obra de evangelización entre los indígenas. Gracias a su gran obra y testimonio, se ganó el título: “Apóstol de Alemania”. Hasta hoy, es honrado como el padre de la fe católica alemana.

En medio de muchas dificultades y pruebas, Bonifacio siguió siendo un hombre de profunda oración, y exhibió una profunda vida espiritual que lo sostuvo durante momentos de pruebas y de tantas dificultades en su misión.

En 754, a la edad de 74 años, Bonifacio fue atacado y asesinado por una banda de paganos cuando estaba a punto de administrar la confirmación a un grupo de neófitos.

Al honrar este gran santo y pillar de la iglesia hoy, en nuestra primera lectura, de su segunda carta a Timoteo, Pablo nos recuerda un hecho muy importante de nuestra vida cristiana y de nuestro camino: “De hecho, todos los que quieran vivir religiosamente en Cristo Jesús serán perseguidos.”

Este fue el mismo camino que Bonifacio anduvo hasta que encontró su muerte. No fue un viaje fácil. Sin embargo, permaneció fiel a Cristo y a su misión. Como fiel siervo, predicó la buena nueva con palabra y acción.

En nuestro tiempo, nosotros también enfrentamos muchas dificultades mientras tratamos de vivir religiosamente en Cristo. No es una tarea fácil, pero Cristo siempre nos consuela a través del poder de su espíritu.

Así que, pidamos a Dios que nos ayude a permanecer fieles a él como lo hizo San Bonifacio, incluso en medio de mucho sufrimiento que experimentamos hoy mientras tratamos de dar testimonio a Jesucristo y su buena nueva.

Jesus Christ, the Eternal and High Priest

Today, the church celebrates the feast of Jesus Christ, the Eternal and High Priest. It is a  movable liturgical feast celebrated annually on the first Thursday after Pentecost.

Approval for this feast was first granted by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 1987.

This feast focuses on the priestly office (Munus sacerdotal) of Christ. Christ is the model for believers. This is especially, for priests who act, in the person of Christ (“in persona Christi”).

In his encyclical of 1947, “Mediator Dei” (God the Mediator) titled: Christ, Priest and Victim.” Pope Pius XII’s wrote:

“Christ is a Priest indeed. However, he is a Priest not for himself, but for us, since in the name of the whole human race, he brings our prayers and religious dispositions to the eternal Father. He is also a victim, but a victim for us, since he substitutes himself for sinners.

Both the first reading and the gospel reading of today captures the essence of this celebration. They both remind us that with only one offering, Christ made perfect forever, those who have been sanctified.

Therefore, today we are all encouraged and all called to pray that all priests would be more like Christ, the compassionate and trustworthy high priest, who continues to intercede for humanity before the Father.

So, let as thank our Lord Jesus Christ for being the Mediator before the Father. He is both the victim and the eternal priest for our salvation. May we also imitate him in his sacrifice and self-donation for our salvation.
